Well, if they wanted a hugely positive reaction they would have given it to a Devil and not an old journeyman who may not be in the league in a few years.

Sal is not a Devil?

I guess Ottawa, Phoenix and Calgary better give the C's to someone else then too.
Kovy's in his 20s and will be a Devil for another decade or so. Sal's pushin' close to 40 and will be retired in a few years.

Kovy played for one NHL team before us, Sal played for two. Kovy played 8 years with the Thrashers, while Sal's not really identifiable with any team. Kovy is far from a journeyman. Sal is far from getting his number raised at the Rock.

What other teamS has Sal played for again? Kovy is just as much a journeyman as Sal.

And Kovy is closer to 30s than Sal is to 40. Kovy is 29, Sal is 36.

I thought Bryce was hispanic, and not black?

Anyway I hate the term journeyman in sports. In my profession a journeyman is someone like me. A guy who's been doing it 10+ years, and is a veteran of the profession. In sports it means a guy who's bounced around to different teams.

He's a Devils player, but I wouldn't have given Rob Niedermayer the "C". Pops, Zach, they were all Devils.

My bad. Just looked his stats up. He was drafted by Tampa but never played for them. Thought he had.

And Stevens wore our shirt for a dozen years, hardly the same. He wasn't even 30 when he became the cap'n. He was more like Kovy than Sal (other than the whole defenseman thing).

Zach up and left the Devils after his one year as a captain. If you ask me, that leaves a worse taste in my mouth than a guy who played on a different team before he came here.

We didn't name him the almighty God of the team or the face of the franchise. Man, hockey needs to start so people can start focusing on what's actually important.

Dislike. I know we're a defense-oriented team, but there's little upside to this. All of our recent captains were identifiable Devils. He's turning 37. He's a journeyman. He's on Kovy's team. Kovy should wear the "C" or nobody at all. Zajac, even, would be better.

First off, I guess you're a Devils fan although I do not like your username considering who the Devils lost to last year in the finals.

That said, Kovy will be around long after Sal retires so the question of Kovy being given the C is only a matter of time.....it's just that the time, according to Pete, isn't now.

Completely agree with you

I don't agree with him but I do agree with disagreeing with you. :D

****en terrible decision by DeBoer.

Not only that he overlooked the best candidate, i'm most disappointed that we will be practically forced to play him over the next 2-3 seasons. Who's to say that Salvador will continue to outplay on merit Adam Larsson next year. I'll say that is highly unlikely but you're not going to healthy scratch your captain.

It also irks me that Salvador was not even in your best 3 leaders last season then all of a sudden he jumps 2 people in the queue to get the captains role. A big slap in the face to Elias and Kovalchuk.

The Kovalchuk Fan Club is MAD, Yo.

He'll be Captain EVENTUALLY....Just not now. Have Patience, Padawan.....

Clearly, those here who disagree with the choice know better than the guys who are with him 9 months every year

“I think it’s a great choice,” said Ilya Kovalchuk, who remains one of the Devils’ alternate captains. “Like Pete (DeBoer) said, there’s a lot of leadership in this group and it’s tough to put letters on every jersey. Even the guys who don’t have a letter, they have to do their job and that’s what they were doing all year last year. The core of the captains they’re staying the same and Bryce he is a great leader and it’s well deserved that C and I’m sure he’ll be a great captain.”

“I think they did the right thing,” right wing David Clarkson said. “He’s one of those guys who leads. He leads by he way he plays. He was actually my roommate for a while too, so I learned a lot from him. I was excited to hear that today, that a guy like him would get it. I’m sure it was a tough decision for the coaches and Mr. (Lou) Lamoriello, but at the end of the day I believe they picked a guy that’s a true leader and a quality individual.”

“He’s been around the league for a long time,” said Patrik Elais, also an alternate captain. “He’s a well respected guy in this locker room. Everybody likes him and he always gives 100 percent on the ice and his approach to the game, all the guys can take a lot from him.”

“What he went through during his injury and how he worked to get back and then to see him rewarded on how well he played, he deserved that,” Lamoriello said. “It wasn’t something given to him. His play awarded him the contract that he got. I feel good for him that he was playing. There was a time there that we thought he’d never play again. He never lost his work ethic, never lost his determination. He never stopped doing what had to be done, but there was a time where I got concerned and he got concerned.

You know that Scott Stevens was named captain after a season in which he refused to report to training camp with New Jersey, right? And that, as captain, he signed an offer sheet with St. Louis and tried to bolt after the 1994 ECF?

He wasn't a "Devil" until we won the Cup in '95, in fact, he was very adamant about not wanting to be here and tried actively tried to leave the Devils. He was named captain anyway.

In that sense, in Bryce's first four years here he's been much more of a "Devil" than Stevens was in his first four years here.

I think its funny that this is the same guy that we got for Cam. But, I think he is going to be a great Captain. This is the first D captain since both Scotts.

Guys on the team were endorsing Salvador as a leader before the 11/12 season.

Oh for Christ's sake people get over it, bunch of petulant little children. Just iron on a "C" on your Kovy jersey if it makes you feel better.

I didn't say Stevens was a dyed-in-the-wool Devil when he became the captain, but it was later proven to be a good call - he spent a dozen years here, won three cups here, had his number retired here, and he's still here.

Since Stevens in '92, every captain we've had has had a solid claim to having their number retired. Sal won't. He wasn't even an alternate last year. It's stupid. Say what you want about Zach being a traitor, but he was in the organization for a decade and came up through our system. Home grown. Great player. Had already been an alternate. We made it to the finals. It was a good choice.

We were gonna retire Langenbrunner?

Aside from Elias and Brodeur, isn't Salvador the longest tenured Devil on this team?
