With how extremely patient both the Sabres and Levi have been, I doubt he plays much here this year and next. And that's a great thing. Go trade for another goalie and when Levi is ready, you could trade that goalie for whatever you paid to go get him.

I'm not a fan of comparing Knight and Hart to Levi because I don't think it's solely an AHL experience issue in these cases. We're talking about teenagers that weren't physically or mentally developed. The jump in competition and reps at an intermediate level could be very secondary issues here, with the primary being that they were just kids and not ready to be full time pros.

Levi , on the other hand, has prolonged his development twice, so he's a bit older. Guys like Hellebyuck and Swayman are much better comparisons, and both started playing NHL games in their 22 year old seasons, which is what Levi will be next year. For me it's much less about playing a certain amount of AHL games than it is about physical and mental maturity, which matches what we saw with Helle & Swayman (one got a bunch of AHL games the other got practically none).

For example, I don't think it would be out of the question for Levi to play:
- 2023-24: 10-15 games
- 2024-25: 50% Split
- 2025-26: Full time starter

I agree that he should start in the AHL and work his way up, but I'm not convinced that his AHL stint will be as long as some might think. Everyone already marvels at the kid's physical and mental maturity, so the acclimation period could be very quick.

Levi has intentionally taken a slower path to his development to date and has openly talked about liking to slow cook things.

I doubt he takes the slow path to this point just to hit the accelerator.

Plus, he hasn’t played 40 games in any season from Bantam on up. He needs time to get used to a pro workload. That is something that is best done away from the pressure that will be on him in Buffalo.

Getting Matt Savoie an exemption so he can play in Rochester next season instead of wasting another year in the Dub.
Hey Hey careful now. Some moderators don't like allowing capable guys to fast track the process.
While I understand the sentiment, I don't care. If you are so far advanced that you can skip a level. You are in fact ready to skip a level.

Devon Levi is probably already regretting his decision

After sitting in the press box watching this shit show today, I believe you're right. He watched and thought f***, even I couldn't help these guys lol.

Levi is with the Sabres and is expected to meet with reporters for the first time on Monday. Granato said he’s currently doubtful for practice Monday given where he is in the immigration process, but he should be on the ice soon. General manager Kevyn Adams and Granato like the idea of Levi being around the team during this high-pressure stretch of games. He can get mentorship from Anderson and practice time at the NHL level to get acclimated. Granato noted that Levi could end up playing in the AHL next season, so this final stretch of games is a chance for them to see how he stacks up in the NHL.

Granato has marveled at the way Levi studies his own game and the goaltender position. He thinks that will serve him well as he goes through the growing pains of adjusting to the NHL.

“He’s so engaged in coaching himself that he has a greater stability because of that,” Granato said. “When a goal goes in, sometimes a goaltender might not know what mistake he made in that. With him, you could probably ask him and he’d tell you exactly what happened and exactly what could have happened in a different scenario within the context of that situation. He has a good base of positional and game knowledge already.”

The challenges for a goalie are different than that of a skater. Mistakes end up in the back of the net. Shot velocity, the ability of top shooters to alter their release, the intensity of screens and quick reactions to rebounds are all drastically different in the NHL compared to college. Those are all things the Sabres will consider before throwing him into game action. But with the way the last few games have gone, it seems reasonable to expect Levi to start a game before too long.

None of our young players should be getting exposed to being caved, without some vet support shielding it.

When you are ready and able to put up a good fight against a superior opponent and you give your all but come up short, that is a legit learning and growing experience. When you are getting caved in night after night, have no idea what to do about it, have no leadership from older players or coaches that know what to do about it, and you and your teammates have all given up and are just trying to get it over with? Thats not a good learning experience.

This last 10 games was exactly the time the team needed those veteran guys who show the younger ones how to get back up and fight back. KA left this team very exposed, both last offseason and thru this deadline, especially given a coaching staff that doesn't know how to do it either.
