Friedman: Sabres gauging the market on Byram

I want Byram don't get me wrong, but I think you're over valueing him if 11, 12 and Rust for Byram and 9 is considered a ripoff. He's a 2nd line LD with warts on an expiring contract I'm willing to take a chance on. He's not Kale Makar.

It’s not a ripoff at all.

it’s a fair value offer I would reject in a vacuum as not meeting my needs but consider as a complement to other moves. (Which I believe was part of your initial post.)

I honestly don't hate the idea in principal. Trading back and using Byram's value to get 2 kicks at the can in an area of the draft that should still have two really good prospects for us moving forward. I understand that aspect of the deal isn't going to appeal to most Sabres fans though. I wish I liked the vet pieces Pittsburgh was selling more.

Leafs should be interested. But I think Sabres fans will be disappointed with his eventual return given he returned Middlestat and then hasn't exactly done anything in Buffalo

Played 23 minutes a night on their top pair and put up just shy of 40 points almost all at even strength while managing some decent defensive results on a terrible team. I wouldn’t expect him to come cheap.

If you are valuing him as a LD with warts on an expiring contract, Sabres fans aren’t going to agree with you. Especially when it’s penguin fans trying to trade the same players away in every thread

Since Sabres fans don’t want futures what names do they realistically think they could get back for Byram.

This is the problem here as most people here don't want to trade Buffalo what they really want or need, they just want to trade draft picks and some guys they don't really value for making their team better.

Anderson. Honestly if both players want out, Dobson since he sucked this year. With Byram's ES production and PP ability, being an offensive defenseman with decent defensive numbers, he should be expensive. Peterka level expensive, but I think Peterka might be overvalued personally.

Andersson isn’t realistic due to trade protection. Dobson makes sense.

I think you vastly overrate that. Not to get political but many Canadians who lived in the US have come back home due to the crazy political climate down south.
I would under 0 circumstances, want to play in Canada. If that is my personal opinion, there will be others that share it. Especially if you are not Canadian.

Europeans seem to love playing in Canada with the exception of Russians who like the US and Montreal.

11th and Rust is a more than fair offer from PIT, but I can see it not being a fit for BUF, as getting another draft pick is not high on their list of priorities. I am sure that they would prefer to add their 9th, or one of their many decent forward prospects, to Byram, to get a really good player. Tough to find the right guy, from the right team, though. I also think that this draft's picks are less sexy than in most years, especially once you get past the first 7-8 picks, so the 11th has less value than in other years.

If BUF is intent on moving Byram then they might have to take the best value deal, then look to move some of the assets in a later deal. Ironically, that's how Byram came to them. Byram wasn't what they wanted in exchange for Mittelstadt, but he was the best value.

I wouldn’t play in Buffalo under any circumstance. I’m from there but would MUCH prefer living in an actual city like Toronto or Montreal.

Most players care about the team, less so about the surroundings. In that regard, BUF comes across as a loser with amateurish management. Now that ARI has a new, deep pocketed owner, the Sabres are probably the worst run franchise in the league.

WAGS care more about the surroundings. Some want the bright lights and big city, others the burbs. Some want the warmth and beach, others are more at home with the north.

If Sabres had a good team with good management, I think that they could attract FA's. Buffalo is kind of sad, but there are some nice areas around the city, it's easy to get around, the Niagara area is pleasant, and you can get a great beach place on Lake Erie or Ontario for the summer. Toronto isn't too far away if you want to get the big city vibe for a while.

Upstate NY is weird. You can get depressed areas, but also some really nice ones.

It only makes sense if there's an immediate swing of 11 + 9 to move way up, or to move those picks in separate deals to strengthen the roster.

Which is very tough to do, and in this draft, anything past the first two probably aren't worth it anyway. Sabres fans are fed up, as they should be, and things are going to get very heated if they don't make the playoffs this year, or at least be right in the thick of a playoff race right to the end.
