Friedman: Sabres gauging the market on Byram

If we're pretending this trade works (it doesn't), why wouldn't Buffalo and Vancouver just trade? I'd rather have Hughes than that New Jersey trio.
I assume it's because Hughes will force his way to New Jersey anyways. Obviously anyone would rather have Hughes but if the option is 2 years of Hughes vs 8+ years of Nemec, Silayev, and Mercer, I think you take the later.

Imo just remove Hughes from the thought equation here since he wouldn't at all be available if he wasn't trying to join his brothers.

Obviously, Buffalo needs players who have already established themselves as NHL players. Good options for them
Calgary: Andersson
Rangers: Schneider

Did I miss a trade? I though Wood was still on Colorado, not Philly.
I believe the poster is trying to trade the Sabres Matthew Wood and a late 1st in a bad draft for Krebs, who…fine, and Bowen Byram, who is the Sabres single biggest trade chip for improving the NHL roster. I suppose it’s just a fact of life that once per page someone has to be reminded that the Sabres are not looking for futures. Our prospect pool is likely better than yours, so more picks and prospects are not of interest.

Which teams need a good pp dman in the next couple years?

Boston?
Calgary?
Chicago?
CAROLINA
florida?
La
MINNESOTA
Nashville (post josi)
PHILADELPHIA
Pittsburgh (post karlson)
SAN JOSE
St Louis
Vancouver (in 2 years hughes leaves)
Washington (post carlsen)

Lots of places he could fit. Essentially acting as 3rd string pp dman in Buffalo and managed 38 points. Put him on a few of these teams he's probably looking at 50-60 points.

Something around Byram for Mikey Anderson?
I think the a Kings would miss Mikey and what he brings to the team too much if they made this trade. He’s great teamed up with Doughty. While Doughty was out he was great teamed up with Gavrikov while on a team friendly deal with term.

If we move on from Peterka (I don't think we will, but the rumors are out there)...Laf might be a good replacement.
I know offense isn't everything and Lafreniere is a player with a completely different skillset, but I'd be extremely leery penciling him into a spot on our top line. That's a huge drop-off in production going from 68 points to 45 points and it's not like you're getting him on some type of value contract either @ 7.45 million a season. At that point aren't you just better off keeping and paying Peterka? I guess this would all hinge on what exactly we'd be getting back in a Peterka deal. I will say I think there will be a good market for Byram, but I dont see the Rangers being anywhere near the top of the list of teams pursuing him.

7.45M is pretty much the going rate for a player of his ilk. And likely 1-1.5M less than JJP is likely to get.

And I think Laf is only an option if the Sabres move on from JJP.....which I doubt we're doing anyway.
Yeah I don't know about that. That contract strikes me as an overpayment by the Rangers thinking/hoping there would be continued development in Lafreniere's game. This season was obviously not great at all on that front. That isnt to say Lafreniere can't still break out and make that a reasonable contract going forward, but right now he's being paid like a top line winger and he does not have anywhere near that type of production.

Saravelli on local van sports radio saying the Sabres might be “gauging the market” on all their players, or something close to that. He even dropped Dahlin’s name, which is crazy.
Byram and Paterka should return a really good player in his prime. Providing one is available.

With Buium coming in, you can cross MN off the list. Faber did ok there, also... certainly as good as Byram.
