Friedman: Sabres gauging the market on Byram

Why stop there? Might as well add Owen Power and Buffalo's 2026 1st too.

Do you actually think the value of Byram and the 9th outweighs Weegar and the 18th?

No shade to Byram, who is an excellent young player in his own right but Weegar is a real deal #1 guy. Not saying he's a top 10D or anything... but he's a really, really good player. His most common partner was Joel Hanley. Joel, who I do like as well, might have a hard time securing a two-year deal in this NHL this offseason. Revolving door of some of the lowest-tier NHLers played his left side the majority of the season... 24 minutes a night, PP, SH, all situation guy. Just turned 31, really low tread on the tires (not even 600 games).

MacKenzie Weegar is legit a non-starter for Calgary unless someone does something really stupid. Like throws something at Conroy that he can't turn down.

Sharks would offer Dal 1st (likely 29-30), Quentin Musty and shakir mukhamadullin

are we in the same ballpark?

Not commenting on the value, but that package entirely misses the mark on meeting team needs. Buffalo is already the youngest team in the league and has about 6,000 prospects of its own. I think any team that can offer a hockey trade is going to resoundingly beat a team offering futures (even if the futures are perceived by fans as having more “value”).

I can see a team offer sheet a 7.2 million dollar for 2 years. A 1st and 3rd for him.

I think that knocks Pittsburgh out as an offer sheet.
Id be interested in this if I was Detroit or LA Kings.
It would be matched immediately anyways so why bother?

Maybe if a team signs him in the next tier up?

But with the cap growing the timing for this isn't likely.

Bryam is an outstanding young Dman that many people tend to downplay for really weird reasons, I just don't get it.

I think it would be matched as well. Sometimes a player just wants certainty and this guarantees he gets his location at UFA.
The contract also makes him tradable.

As San Jose is my second team, I’d take it. But I think it’s an overpayment. Musty and Mukhamadullin would be enough. Maybe throw in one of Kovalenko or Graf.

Not for nothing but there is a sizable gap between Graf and Kovalenko.

I'd actually put Graf's value the same as that Dallas 1st if not a bit more as he has proven himself a capable NHLer. He has a bright future ahead of him.

Because if Buffalo matches, they walk Byram straight to UFA and lose him for free.

Eh, I was a huge fan of Tank Sr., so him having minimal value means nothing to me. The Sabres need to make changes, and there’s an assumption a lot of the older Amerks players are moving on. I mean Kisakov is probably going back to Russia, Murray is probably being let go, Rousek is going to Sweden, Tullio was loaned to Calgary just so he could play, and who knows about any of the AHL deal guys. Especially with the rumour that the Sabres assistant GM and Amerks GM also moving on.

If the futures have legitimately more value than a hockey trade shouldn’t the Sabres GM take those futures and use them to trade for the hockey players he wants? Why does he need to settle for less instead of using the best return to acquire what’s better?

Or they trade him at the deadline for a 1st and prospect at the deadline if they haven't been able to convince him to sign him to an extension in the 2 years between now and then.

Not to mention the signing team is taking the exact same risk

But keep saying this enough and maybe people will believe you.

Coming from the king of delusion himself? That's rich

I'm not the ones coming into every thread on the board trying to pawn off my shitty players for actual good ones.

Face it, the only trade pieces worth a damn on Calgary are Wolf and Parekh. Everyone else has negative value. Until you blow it up and tank properly you will perennial 9th placers.

Would something around Andersson + Pospisil for Byram and Quinn work? Assuming it's after July 1 and Andersson's willing to extend. Pospisil would provide some much needed defensive play too. I would offer Coleman but I doubt he waives there

Really curious what opinions are on Quinn around the league.

I'm pretty sure Sabres management had him ranked on par, if not ahead of Peterka a year ago.

How much has a terrible year coming off two bad injuries changed that?

I'd certainly be intrigued by him as a buy-low candidate if he's for sale at those rates.

What? But you said Wolf sucks. Not even top 5 in Calder voting

Teams tend to be conservative in doing this unless they feel like they can actually get the player as the what goes around comes around feeling amongst the NHL management brotherhood has a somewhat " unwritten code" for these signings.
