Friedman: Sabres gauging the market on Byram

If Byram is as bad as Buffalo fans keep saying he is, then I have less than zero interest in moving Eklund for him.
I don't think there are Buffalo fans saying he is bad. We are kind of caught in the middle where we don't want to pay him and Dahlin 20 million to be the great top pairing they were when they played together and Byram (assuming through his agent?) has noted a desire for top pairing and top PP unit minutes. We also have Power slotting into this mix.

The easiest thing is to make the young top pairing dman available for a hockey trade to fill a need. Now if that's Byram or Power...who knows.

That is a big part of it - the lines drawn between those who favor Byram vs. those who favor Power. Dahlin pairs well with just about everyone, it's what do they do in payroll if someone isn't able to fill in for him if he is yet again targeted by opposition and knocked out of games.

I'm still of a mind to move both.

Move out both and build a more defensively solid core with some bite to it. Added bonus would be the cap savings which could be spent on improving the forward group.

The problem is that it doesn’t really sound like Byram wants to stay in Buffalo long-term. Even if they trade Power, Byram is still never going to get #1 minutes or play on the top PP while Dahlin is around, which should be for his whole career. So I think the Sabres will be forced to deal Byram this summer or risk him walking straight to UFA. That’s not a position of negotiating power and the last ten years of the Sabres organization shows them repeatedly getting hosed in trades where they’re trying to move a player that has them by the ‘nads…

I'd love to add Byram to the Sharks but we don't have an asset to offer to directly address their needs. If they get to a point where they can take what we do have to then turn around and get what they need, I'd like to make a deal with them here. But I understand if that's just not the most convenient thing available for them. We're just not great fits as trade partners on our own, imo.

If the canucks think hughes is walking at the end of this contract then they should acquire byram. He's a 40 point dman when he doesn't have pp time. With pp time he's even better.

Flyers are a fit here, he'd be their number one D and get PP1 minutes, tracks better with their rebuild

I think Byram+9th pick for Konecny and 22nd pick can make sense here

Konecny would be a huge get for Buffalo, a team that's clearly had enough of being mediocre and willing to put everything on the line
I don’t hate this for either team

Dallas first rounder and maybe Halts? I think that's kinda low but he's likely benefitting a lot from Dahlin.

I don't think that's terribly interesting for Buffalo unless the Byram market is just not great given the contract situation and what he's asking for. I would guess teams would have interest but do any of them have a right-handed defenseman to provide them or something to improve their goaltending? I really don't know. I know the Sharks can't really offer anything like that unless there's an out-sized interest in Liljegren as he is certainly not the quality that the Sabres would be looking for. The assets they could get from the Sharks in a Byram trade could be used to address those things like maybe an extra late 1st would help them land a Noah Dobson if the two sides had mutual interest.

Haven't heard anything outside him wanting more minutes. Can be solved by moving Power. Top pairing minutes and PP2 min should make him happy. My vote is to move one of them for a 2c. Norris/2C/McLeod/Krebs and Kulich learning on the wing is a strong center spine with Ostlund/Kozak/Wahlberg waiting.

With Hronek for a partner wouldn’t that be what Dahlin needs to teach his best, and get into that Norris discussion? Look what Toews did for Makar and Hronek did for Hughes.

What Dahlin needs to be in the Norris conversation is for the Sabres to make the playoffs. Or relocate to a large market that gets media attention even when they suck. He’s already there as a player and has been for 3 seasons.
