Friedman: Sabres gauging the market on Byram

The Leafs are in the mix, they give themselves a chance every year.

The only thing Buffalo ever is in the mix for is the draft lottery.
Yup give themselves a chance every year! Lol

I for one do want him in NY. I think he would breakout playing with Fox, simply because Fox is a different type of D than Dahlin. He’s not a skater, he’s more of a cerebral play reader. That lets Byram rush the puck and take advantage of space when Fox draws two opponents and puts the puck in an opening.

Just my personal opinion. Variable pieces I am okay with moving.

If you think Dahlin was in any way impairing Byram with his play style, I would suggest you go take a look at the WOWYs for that pairing. Byram-Dahlin might’ve been the best pairing in the NHL last year. Byram away from Dahlin was much, much less effective.

That wasn’t what I was saying at all, more so that Fox doesn’t need the puck on his stick as much which would allow Byram to stretch his legs even more. Dahlin is obviously the top dog in Buffalo. While Fox is likewise, the 1D in NY, he’s not a puck rushing threat and Byram could have a nice opportunity there, similar to what was going on with Dahlin but perhaps with a bit more leash to be “the guy” on some ways. I see potential. I’ve been a fan of Byram’s and I love Ras.

If Buffalo is fine with a package of futures, I think San Jose would be a good spot for Byram, but more than likely they would want an already-effective young NHL player.

Maybe not? Schneider is a young top four D and is a right shot. He’s proving himself might be perfect to play either with Dahlin or Power and st a good cap too.
Seems to be a bottom pairing dman that gets some PK time. Not saying that we couldn't use him but Byram straight up would be a quick, "no".

Imo Byram isn’t too much for just Schneider.
Look at how many RHD there are around the league who can handle 20 minutes per night who you MIGHT be able to pry away if you over pay. I can’t find more than 3.

So I agree. I wish Schneider didn’t need a contract, that’s the only fly in the ointment for me.

I like Schneider enough as a target, but he hasn't shown the ability to play 20 minutes a night (at least not yet). He's really more of a good #5 with the potential to become a solid 2nd pairing guy. My problem with trading Byram for him is Byram's already a #3 d-man, hell on Buffalo he's probably our #2 given Power's growing pains. That's a hell of a step down in the caliber of defenseman Buffalo is getting in return. I get we desperately need a RHD with the ability to actually defend in his own zone and Byram appears to be the odd man out, but I'd imagine the Rangers take that deal in a heartbeat and Buffalo would quickly regret it.

He also doesn't play 20 min a night, we wouldn't know if he could handle the uptick

Agreed he’s like a #5 but that’s fine, it’ll be reflected in his AAV. Buffalo has two 1OA picks on the left, you’ll have to settle for a guy playing 40 seconds more than he usually might on the other side.

Good goalies in this era are just goalies playing behind good defenses. Even the small handful of goalies in the NHL that can outplay the D in front of them can’t do it reliably season over season. Fix the Sabres team defense and you fix the goaltending.

That's not true you are completely dismissing goaltending like It's the most important position in the sport.

If you took the Sabres defense, especially their top 4 and gave them a decent goaltender like a Binnington or a Gibson, as long as the team stayed healthy their playoff chances go up significantly.

And yes I include Gibson in that I feel like he needs to get off the Ducks.

The problem is even if you do get that goaltender you are still in a division with Toronto, Florida, Tampa and now Ottawa.

I just know UPL is not it.

You are VASTLY, VASTLY over-rating the defensive ability of our non-Dahlin top 4 defensemen.
