Friedman: Sabres gauging the market on Byram

I wonder if something around Bryan for Romanov or Mikey Anderson wouldn’t make sense. Gives Buffalo a flavor of defensmen they need more of and give the Kings / Islanders a more offensively inclined defensmen.

MN would not need another LHD, with Brodin. Midleton, and Buium, among others, on that side. MN certainly wouldn't be adding, either. Spurgeon, for all that he is older, is the better Dman. Since he has a 15 team NTC, Sabres are surely on it, making the whole deal unlikely. He will not voluntarily uproot his family so he can go and play for a bad team with lousy management.

Byram can play both sides but I do understand your opinion. I want a defenseman akin to Spurgeon, grizzled vet with years still at a strong level of play who can help shepherd Power. A new Teppo Numenin if you will. He even has the perfect contract length at 2 years as it overtakes Skinner’s 6mil cap hit and gives us the option to bring him back a bit longer.

That being said the only way I see Spurgeon saying yes is if he and Zucker and/or Erik Staal were friends. He’d also be able to get a scouting report on the city from Tyler Ennis.

The Byram - Dahlin pairing outscored opponents 35 - 15. That's the best GF% of any pairing in the league.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Byram can play a ton of minutes in the role he has and they can still have him on PP2. There aren't that many teams where he is going to get #1 PP time, so if that's his issue he needs to come to reality. He should stay there with Dahlin and Buffalo should be shopping Owen Power instead.

How about Weegar instead of Andersson. Weegar + FLA 1st for Byram + Buffalo 1st

Given the age of the players - Weegar is 31 and Byram 23 - I think Calgary would be very eager to do this deal. So eager in fact, that they can't credibly demand a pick swap. This might be a straight up one for one.

I'm sure that you'll get some pushback from Sabres fans on this idea, as "we need help NOW".

BUT

We ain't doing more than simply making the playoffs with the core we have. Maybe we win a round here and there....but this core isn't winning a Cup. I'd absolutely do 2OA for Byram and 9OA.....maybe with a small plus from San Jose. But, ONLY if Misa is on the board. I think Misa is exactly what the Sabres need. And yeah, it might take a few years for him to max out.....but as I've said....it's not like this core is gonna do anything in the playoffs.

That would be the only way I could see Buffalo taking a deal like that. A step back to eventually take two steps forward. I think Misa is that type of talent to help with that.

I totally understand the fanbase fatigue though. It's extremely hard to accept when trapped in a money pit. Sharks fans know it well.

Not gonna happen, he's not available, won't be traded. But I'm curious what Buffalo would pay for Brock Faber.
I wonder where Tage for Faber conversations would go. I think the Age gap makes it hard, but Tage is also on a steal of a deal.

Byram is better than Power. Would be so Adams to mess this up. Move Power instead, the guy is smooth offensively but so soft defensively and shoots muffins.

Lol no they wouldn't Weegar is 10 times the defenseman Byram will ever be

Had to double check, but you're right. So, technically, they could trade him, but it doesn't make any sense for the other reasons I listed.
Maybe trade Hronek for Byram + a good young forward? Then deal a left shot D for another young forward? The Sabres need a guy just like Hronek. Might work out well for both clubs?

Leafs should be interested. But I think Sabres fans will be disappointed with his eventual return given he returned Middlestat and then hasn't exactly done anything in Buffalo

I mean, other than all the 5-on-5 points this year, true. 9th in five-on-five points among defensemen in the whole league ain't bad.
