Friedman: Sabres gauging the market on Byram

A pretty popular Sharks fan YouTuber recently floated this idea:

2OA for Bryan (though he had the initial deal with Powers, he made clear that Byram was interchangeable with him, he only preferred Powers) and 9OA.

I'm curious on Buff fans thoughts on this proposal.
Not sure the gap between Misa and McQueen/Bear/Mrka/etc is Byram... Looks a bit much.

Interesting since SJ needs badly another top young D beside Dickinson. Ideally they would target a RD, but they could luck into Mrka and get Byram + Mrka for Misa.

Not a Sabres fan but that seems like an overpay by the Sabres.

I read that first as Byram + Powers + 9th OA for 2OA and thought it was the worst trade ever

Powers I wouldn't deal if I'm the Sabres. He's young a 1OA pick with a lot of room to grow and develop. He will be a very good D one day if just managed and coached properly.

Byram value should be a top 10 pick probabl 8th to 10 th OA.

I dont think cost to jump 7 spots is two top 10 pick level assets.

The problem with a lot of these proposals is Buffalo is pretty much at the point of being money in - money out. They can't just trade Byram for a big contract without losing someone else they don't want to lose. So either Buffalo has to trade money out with Bryam, or take picks or prospects back.

That is mine thought as well leaving the draft with Mrtka and Bryam would be sweet. Even if Mrtka is gone by 9, I'm a big Hensler fan and would have no issue taking him at 9.

As far as the value, I also agree it could use a bit of a sweetener from the Sharks side. What that is for you guys I'm unsure but I know I would be comfortable with a prospect the caliber of Halttunen or Lund. I think local boy Musty would be too rich for me.

The value is ass. This draft isn’t good. Even if it was, Buffalo isn’t trying to get younger and shittier next season.

Its a good thing Buffalo added a player that costs 8 million and is made of glass.

Buffalo does not need prospects. They also have a decent amount of talent on the team. The issue is more team construction than anything else. Byram will be traded (hopefully) for a player (solid RD that can play defense, gritty center/winger, etc...) that will help the team now.

Cole Perfetti for Byram

Winnipeg gets a defenseman they are lacking and Buffalo gets a young cost controlled forward.

Buffalo can then move out Peterka for a top 4 defenseman

uhhh Morrissey Samberg Stanley is pretty damn solid

If the Sabres could get Andersson under contract i could see the Flames being a great target to be a #1 for Byram. Certainly not trading him for a pending UFA though

Do wonder about Weegar also as that could give BUF the RD veteran they need plus he's fairly local. Big age gap though that probably doesn't fit that well for the Sabres long term if they are thinking more that direction.

Could be some sacrifice on both sides if Weegar would except the move.
Flames get worse short term but adds a more time approprate piece that can be PP1 and the Sabres get an immediate spike and someone who can help Power and Dahlin settle things down.

I've had Byram to Calgary for awhile now. It makes some sense but Sabres need some assurances that whichever one they get wouldn't bolt and would be part of a long term solution

Plus is on the wrong side.
one year of Andersson is not worth Byram. Sabres would be idiots to make that deal without assurances of an extension given how hard it is for them to retain players.

Byram is RFA and given his birthplace age and the fact he would immediately become LD1 in Calgary he would be an excellent long term core piece for them and almost certainly sign on for that opportunity

Byram isn't playing above Morrissey or Samberg, so this is a dumb trade for the Jets. He isn't good enough on the right side either, and even if he was, Demelo still takes on tough defensive assignments. Being marginally better than Pionk at best isn't enticing enough for the Jets to go for.

Weegar isn't at all available and almost certainly won't waive for anywhere. He just had a kid and wants to settle down.

There is absolutely something that could be built around Andersson though. He would be good for the Sabres PK and 2nd unit, and fantastic for their leadership group. That's probably what he would bring the most. Sabres would have to be willing to pay him to stay though and he's reportedly interested in something similar to the Chychrun deal, though I think he would sign for 8-8.5M long term

So how many teams need a PP1 guy? Thats the only way you trade for him right? He is wasted behind someone.

It would take some convincing but

Byram + Peterka for Rossi + Spurgeon and a pick
MN would not need another LHD, with Brodin. Midleton, and Buium, among others, on that side. MN certainly wouldn't be adding, either. Spurgeon, for all that he is older, is the better Dman. Since he has a 15 team NTC, Sabres are surely on it, making the whole deal unlikely. He will not voluntarily uproot his family so he can go and play for a bad team with lousy management.

I'm sure that you'll get some pushback from Sabres fans on this idea, as "we need help NOW".

BUT

We ain't doing more than simply making the playoffs with the core we have. Maybe we win a round here and there....but this core isn't winning a Cup. I'd absolutely do 2OA for Byram and 9OA.....maybe with a small plus from San Jose. But, ONLY if Misa is on the board. I think Misa is exactly what the Sabres need. And yeah, it might take a few years for him to max out.....but as I've said....it's not like this core is gonna do anything in the playoffs.
