Friedman: Sabres gauging the market on Byram

Byram for picks makes sense as they will have the cap to extend McLeod, Peterka and Jack Quinn. Use the picks to deal for a position of need once they have the cap space.

Agree. I know some Buffalo fans think that they're set at D (more or less), but Andy would provide them with sorely needed leadership.

Whether there would be adds by either side is open to debate. The point is that I am sure something would be accomplished.

Buffalo has picks coming out of the ying-yang and a farm team brimming with prospects. I am not so sure they would be interested in more picks, but having more defensive depth, i.e. Miromanov or Bean, might enter in to the discussion.

Perhaps a larger trade could be had as well given that they have the 9th pick overall.
Not worth discussing pick 9 and Andersson in the same conversation since he can't sign until July 1st. Personally I would be looking at Jack Quinn and Peyton Krebs as potential add ons. I could see Buffalo having interest in one of Coleman or Sharangovich (less likely) too.

But Byram fits the MO of all Conroy's previous trade targets so I think he will definitely be in on this

I've seen at least one person say "Byram for Sherangovich and then Buffalo signs Fabbro as a UFA". I'm not sure Andersson is the perfect fit in Buffalo and I'm not sure he would extend there.
Andersson has expressed a lot of interest in staying in Calgary but they are quite far apart on negotiations from whats been reported. I don't think the Buffalo weather would be a big deterrent for him considering how bad Calgary can get in the winter. I think if they are willing to pay him he would probably be willing to sign there.

I think they can definitely get back a 1st+ for him but I don't think the Sabres will be able to swap him for another area of need straight up. I don't remember the last time a player's RFA rights were traded for another NHL player, it's most commonly futures going back.

I think you have to go all the way back to Trouba to NYR for a trade of RFA rights bringing back another NHL player, and that was Trouba for Pionk and a 1st. Fiala was the last big name RFA traded and he was moved for Faber (as a prospect) and a 1st.

I'd personally move the NYR 1st and 2 2nds for him, but I know Buffalo doesn't want futures so I'm curious if another team can offer more NHL ready help.
Well, I think the futures thing with regards to Buffalo wanting an NHL player in return has a couple of roads Adams could go down. Yes it could be a one for one player trade, or, if the futures offer is good enough Adams could package that futures offer with Buffalo’s futures and get a player. In other words, it may not be as limiting as some perceive it to be. But we’ll see where this goes, either way Adams has to address the actual roster as many are saying.

I doubt Buffalo wants to do that though. Probably a hockey trade makes more sense for them.
Could make sense if Buffalo is making several moves. Sign Ekblad as a UFA to pair with Power, trade Byram for picks, decide if they want to try Samuelsson with Dahlin again or attempt to move and replace Samuelsson, etc etc. Maybe move out a forward too so there's cap room for Ekblad.

Isn't that the role of McLeod? He seemed to do pretty good in it last season
Yeah. He was great.

I just believe Cirelli can hold down the 2nd line with McLeod holding down the the 3rd line. Both are very good skating defensive centers, so the fit is solid. Then target someone like Drury, and suddenly, while the center depth lacks highend talent, it's flush with players who can play well in their zone and put up points.

I'd love to get a bonafide 2nd line center, but I dont see a team giving one of those up. Maybe Rossi, but then we're once again dealing with a young C trying to learn the game. Cirelli comes with playoff pedigree + actually may be someone they can pry out of TB if Tampa is looking for a quick retool. Peterka would be an interesting option for them.

I think them signing Ekblad would be another disaster.

McLeod plays 3C, they have Norris, Thompson and Kullich to play 1 and 2C
Norris can't be counted on to stay healthy. Kulich is 21 and shouldn't be counted on to be a top 6 center just yet. Thompson can play center.....but offers very little defensively.

The Sabres major problem is that we've got a lot of talent.....but not a TEAM.
