This definitely would not happen but how would Buffalo value the rights to Mitch Marner?

Against my best wishes, my Leafs will probably re-sign him. However, Buffalo could perhaps sign him in FA given proximity to Toronto and his family. So basically the rights would allow you to sign him for an extra year at maybe 1.8-2 million less per season.

And before someone says they could just sign Marner for free, I think Buffalo would need the competitive advantage of the 8th year. Without it, they are competing with the likes of Chicago, Anaheim, Utah, etc.

Honestly, with the Sabres being last in the East and a realistic shot at the lottery again, id sell everything but Dahlin and Thompson for as many unprotected picks as possible and go ham on McKenna next year.

That is obvious here, but doesnt mean its the wrong move. Youre in last place and want to trade Cozens and Byram for a 2C and middle pairing Dman. You guys really how insane that sounds to everyone else right?

A. Youre not close to being good still.
B. You want to trade two assets for two identical assets who just look differently.

When Tage Thompson is your 2C still scoring at that 60-70 pt pace, we can talk and the Sabres might not suck. Eichel would be so nice right now.

If for some insane reason, Marner was interested in signing in Buffalo, I’d offer him just about whatever he wants.

I still wouldn’t trade more than a 3rd or 4th for the extra chance to sign him.
