Sabres are too young, with too many players that we have to hope develop further. There needs to be a shakeup in Buffalo. What Hockey trades or established players for assets are you willing to do? There is a lot of smoke at the deadline here.

Cozens and Byram are the main two I am looking to move. We need a real top 6 C and a top 4 defenseman that plays defense. Outside of Thompson and Dahlin, I don't think anyone is untouchable.

Maybe it would be helpful to list what would be traded out:

2025 1st (top 5)
2026 1st
2025 2nd (top 40)

Helenius 18yr 60NHLe (AHL) (2-way C)
Ostlund 19yr 51NHLe (AHL) (Playmaker C)
Wahlberg 19yr 45NHLe (AHL) (Big C)
Rosen 21yr 64NHLe (AHL) (Offensive F)
Poltapov 22yr 51NHLe (KHL) (Offensive F)
Strbak 19yr 53NHLe (NCAA) (2-way RHD)
Komarov 20yr 28NHLe (AHL) (Defensive RHD)
Levi 23yr 2.19 GAA (AHL) (Jedi)

Thanks for adding that. I definitely want to change the roster construction too so almost no one is safe.

I'd be curious what the GM thought about this dilemma.

Which player they value more? Byram vs Power. I don't think the answer to this question is clear cut at all.
I think that depends on (a) how other GM's value them and what they would be willing to give up, and (b) what Byram's next contract is going to look like.

For the sake of getting there - lets assume Byram signs an 8 x $8.15MM deal.

Now what do you think?

Which player do you think carries more value on the market and to the Buffalo GM?

There's enough assets here to get a franchise center or goalie, especially if you can part with one of the big 2 defensemen. Hard to find those available, I know, and none come to mind, but the assets are there to get it done if you find a firesale

I think the value around the league would actually be pretty close. I think Power's age, height, aura of being #1OA, and enticing offensive advanced stats since joining the league probably give him slightly higher value than Byram - especially for a team that needs a PP QB and doesn't have a Makar/Hughes/Dahlin type of player. I actually have no idea which one of them the Sabres value more. I suspect that Adams wants to keep them both unless another GM knocks his socks off or demands one of them as part of a larger trade.

What franchise centers are even potentially available? They almost never are. Trading for a "franchise goalie" (if there even is such a thing any more) should not be a priority here. Luukonen is more than good enough if the rest of the roster is appropriately upgraded. I wouldn't spend any quality assets on a starting goalie.

Agreed that Centers are hard to come by. They're also usually hard to find the assets to acquire, but Buffalo does have those. So you need a team about to pack it in and rebuild.

As for a goalie, IMO they need a guy who can steal games. That's often the first step in the right direction for a franchise. If Luukonen is that guy, then sure, but they need to start winning games they're not good enough to win sooner rather than later.

Franchise centers also often have NTCs. See if you can guess which team is always on the no-trade list. You need a really weird situation -- like Eichel's medical situation or the dysfunctional Canucks locker room to make a 1C available. Supposedly BUF had a deal lined up for Necas last summer, but I think he nixxed it. BUF definitely has the assets and cap space to do a deal -- the bigger question is whether there is anyone out there.

I mean, as unpalletable as it is for Buffalo fans to hear, that kind of puts you in a situation where you need to keep rebuilding, except one that doesn't get rushed along (someone made a great point earlier in this thread about Buffalo jumping the gun as soon as they got Eichel).

It's really rare to build a great team without a great center. And yeah, those are tough to acquire, especially if you're at the top of everyone's no trade list. Which sucks, because Buffalo is one of the few teams in recent memory to actually have the expendable assets to bring a guy in.

Never said he would be on the discount rack. Just wondering what his value would be. I know he's a Syracuse-born player and he has ties to the northern New York area.

They’re not going to move him if they can re-sign him, which, given his background, seems pretty likely.

I think his value would be pretty high. He's got strong possession metrics, good production, and the size that teams put a premium on. That contract at 50% would also be extremely cheap for 2 playoff runs.
