If anyone is on ESPN.com and takes part in their fantasy contests, you know about their Hockey Challenge contest. Each player in the NHL is assigned a salary based on performance (the top skaters will start just under $9 million, the goalies closer to $12 million) and you are given $100 million to build a roster of six forwards, four defensemen and two goaltenders each week. You try to accumulate points from goals (one point), assists (one point) and goalie wins (two points). Shutouts provide a bonus point for goaltenders and any defensemen on an NHL team that earns a shutout also earn a bonus point. The contest lasts for the regular season (this year due to the lockout shortening the regular season - it won't be broken up into two separate contests) and theres even a playoff Hockey Challenge contest as well.

Since I'm already doing this for another group, I said what the heck, we have smart people in here and ones that are good at picking stuff (like the Sabres Survivor Contest) so why not make a Sabres HockeysFuture group! So I did and the password is LetsGoBuffalo! (Note: Theres also a group called Fans Of The Buffalo Sabres - just type in Buffalo Sabres while searching for groups and it should be the first one listed - no need for a password since its a public group.)

Deadline to do your team is 3:00 pm ET on Saturday, January 19 - and the first week consist of all games from that time to the end of the final game on Sunday, January 27. Future weeks have the deadline to do your team on Mondays at whenever the start of the first game is played that day. (Usually 7:00 pm ET.)

Hope to seeyou all there! LaxSabre - aka BuffaloFreeze - Sabres HockeysFuture Group - Hockey Challenge - ESPN.com

PS: If you have problems entering the group via the groups name and password (note you have to include the ! in the password) - pm your email and I'll send you a private invite. You should be able to join the group then.

(NHL.com Hat Trick Contest - Group Name: Sabres HockeysFuture - Password: LetsGoBuffalo!
Theres also a Buffalo Sabres Group you can enter as well - no password as its a public group.)

The NHL Hat Trick Challenge tests your ability to predict what happens on the ice.
The objective is to accumulate the most “Hat Tricks”.
To score a hat trick, you must correctly answer all three questions based on possible outcomes involving NHL games.

There are three new questions each day and each question only has one right answer. Example questions: Will the Flyers or Pens win the game? Will the Canucks score three or more goals? Will Ryan Miller make 30 or more saves? How many penalties total in the Bruins vs Canadiens game?

(LaxSabre: They must have had someone whose a Sabres fan do the questions because there was alot of them based on Sabres games last season. They had to be number #2 behind Pittsburgh as the team who got the most questions based on them. Looks like he/she may have been fired as the questions for the Saturday/Sunday are up and theres none for the Flyers-Sabres game. Usually if theres a NBC or NBCSN game on, theres a question about that game so there should have been one for the Flyers-Sabres game. Hopefully we get one for Mondays Sabres-Leafs game and its about the Sabres and not the Leafs.)

The entrant who accumulates the most "hat tricks" during the NHL 2012-13 Regular Season will be considered the Grand Prize winner. The Grand Prize includes a trip for two (2) to Game 1 of the 2013 Stanley Cup Final including tickets, airfare and hotel.

The entrant who accumulates the most "hat tricks" each month will be considered the Monthly Winner. Each winner will receive a $250 USD gift code to Shop.NHL.com or Shop.Canada.NHL.com.

You do not have to play every day to qualify for prizing, but it certainly will help your chances.

LaxSabre: Hope to see you all enter our group for this contest!

If anyone is doing the Hockey Challenge game on ESPN.com and/or the Hat Trick contest on NHL.com and wants to see how they stack up against other Sabres fans, feel free to join my Buffalo Range groups for either contest. Group Name - Buffalo Range - Password - GoBuffGo. (Unfortunately due to lack of interest - I deleted the Sabres HockeysFuture group from both contests.)

You can still enter the Hat Trick contest - especially if you want to complete against me in the Buffalo Range group. I've only got one hat trick (which happened last night - Hawks/Blues winning and no goal for Groiux) and only a more few goals besides that to my credit. So you won't be too far behind yours truly in the race to be number #1 in the group.

It will be too late to complete for the top prize in the Hockey Challenge contest on ESPN.com (as you will be already be down by something like 75 points) but if you enter the contest and join my Buffalo Range group - you can still complete for the top spot there as I've decided to drop the lowest weekly score for each member of the group. Deadline to enter your team for Week #2 and to join the Buffalo Range group is Monday evening - 7:00 pm ET.

How did you guys do when it came to picking Sabres in your fantasy hockey leagues? My breakdown as follows - I have five fantasy hockey teams with the most three Sabres on one team - Miller (4 - keeper in two) Vanek (3 - keeper in one) Pominville (2) Ennis (2) Hodgson (1) Ott (1) Foligno (1) and Grigorenko (1).
