GDT: Sabres at Oilers, Jan. 25, 2025, 4:00 p.m. EST

Hard times in the pub, with a Sabres loss and no working TVs

Nice half-hearted effort by Dahlin on that missed empty net shot.

Captain material right there.

Felt the same way about Thompson in the offensive zone visibly shrugging after missing the net with his one and then slowly skating into the corner to try and help on the fore check. Feels like they’re at the point where they’re going to lose everyone. If Terri won’t sell, maybe somebody should introduce relegation as a possibility.

So they are who they are at this point. It is not lack of effort imho. Rather there is no commitment to doing the same, little, things consistently, with a few exceptions. Tage when in front of the net causes chaos. He can’t really operate effectively with his wingspan but it tilts the ice. When he stands out on the half wall they effectively playing a man down. He is your top line focal point and he doesn’t consistently tilt the ice. Benson plays like he is possessed and is aggressive going to dirty areas. He is still a bit light. Zucker and he are they way the need to play. Kulich twice in the last 2 games saw the play and dropped back behind the F1 to benon the right side of the puck. But no one else does these things consistently and they end up out of position or expending too much effort to defend and the results don’t change. Same applies to all dmen. They are not disciplined enough to seal off advantage and wait for help. They engage in chasing the play in hopes of getting the puck back, not with a design on how to do it.

This is both a roster issue and coaching issue. And of course a management issue. But I can’t see the sense in roster changes until there is someone steering the ship that the players will buy into. @littletonhockeycoach posted it looked like Appert was the defacto bench boss. I think I see this pov. This squad has issues. At all levels. And it looks like neither a quick or painless fix. I thought there was effort today, or at least energy. But the inconsistency in all areas just dooms them. Smh.

Well reasoned. I suspect the management strategy is Lindy is coach for a season or two and then moves up into the vacant GM position because Adams becomes the VP of Hockey Operations. Appert becomes HC. The Assistant Coaches remain.

We fans are screwed for another half dozen years.

What city will they be doing this in? Because they’ll sell zero tickets in this one.

Hopefully they are paying appert well. I heard SUNY Morrisville wanted him last year
Not in hard dollars, but he does get 40% of hair care products from Edie Adams Cut n Curl. Remember to join us next week for another episode of Strikes, Spares and Misses.

Feel bad for Kulich, he tried to kick it to his stick. Came close.

This team really proves that if you aren't developing you're regressing. I though they peaked back in 22/23 and that it would be hard once the trend started going the other way but they really raced to the bottom in a spectacular fashion.

And here I am just tuning for what I thought was a 9 pm start.

Ignorance is bliss.

If it makes you feel better, even Tim Horton’s (in Canada) has given up on the Sabres. With as many Canadian teams in action today, the only Oiler option to score was Nurse

EDIT: the hockey picks game is usually centric to Canadian teams, but even today it didn’t have Oilers, other than Nurse and McDavid. And it updates in real time, because once a game starts you don’t get to pick anyone from that game.
