Meh, people keep saying that. Any good GM inquires but there was a number that stopped all the other bidders (except SJ?) and I bet the other serious clubs did not have a Matthews and a Kadri and thats the key. It was a move based on zero need with an NHL 2018 roster strategy. In hindsight Dubas took his shot and with Kadri not getting suspended and very slightly better goaltending it could have played out much differently. But it didn't, and worse than the signing really, was the decision making afterwards when the cap didn't grow but he stubbornly tried to win with the unbalanced cap and a coach that got a fraction from JT of what Babcock did. Mistakes are going to be made when you take risks but if you don't own them and make an effort to correct them you are screwing up.Always the one thing I never gave him a hard time for
You're not saying no to Tavares in that moment. No GM would imho
I wouldn't have done that deal but what if KD had held the line at $10.5? Did JT really want to come home or was that just a bonus. What if he had said $2M more than Stamkos is where we draw the line for a guy that has never topped 86 pts? If that happens. does Matthews still cost $11.5? Looking back my issues aren't with the club taking a chance on JT, they are more with desperately hanging onto a big 4 plus Keefe strategy.
But loving the JT tonight
