Makes sense for both to do long term. The player gets guaranteed nearly 50 million and knows he’ll see another payday at 28.

Team gets a deal that’s already looking good and only gets more valuable as the cap rises.

If we basing it just off last season no way is he worth 7M, maybe a 2 years 5M bridged deal. He is taking the security of 49M dollars over the chance to do better 2 years from now

Benson and his agent might be leaving 500k-1M/season on the table near the end of that contract but Benson being in a position to collect $50M now and then be young enough to maybe collect another $50M+ as a UFA has to be enticing as hell for the kid.

Good for everyone involved. The league is better off when the Sabres are good and having a culture fit like Benson around for the long haul is nothing but awesome for that team.

I would imagine it is Benson that wanted the 7 years, not the Sabres.

He'll be a UFA at 28 and in line for a huge deal then.

Sabres getting three UFA years at a large discount, Benson getting (more or less) a couple RFA years at an extra $2M or so.

But I think this will look like fair value as soon as this year, and the rising cap is going make it look Patrice Bergeron's contract in few years.

At least with my inflated view of Benson.

The Benson extension is an interesting metric for what a post-breakout Stank/Blake extension would've looked like. Stank and Blake probably easily would've gotten 8x8 if they had signed after the playoffs.

with cap going up and assuming his value stats etc go up, he's probly looking at an 80M + contract when he's 28.

but yeah for now it's a win win
