This will be an interesting game. Buffalo is probably still likely at this point in the season to see this as a measuring stick game against a team that's finished high in the league the past couple of years. And we're coming off a tough game last night. We might need another big Antti performance.

In light of the thread @Boom Boom Apathy just posted... am I crazy or do the Sabres always have similarly unbelievable starts?

Sabres 1st 10 games:

18-19: 6-4-0
19-20: 8-1-1
20-21: 4-4-2
21-22: 5-4-1 (but started 5-1-1)
22-23: 7-3-0

That seems statistically relevant for a team that has been not good for the seasons listed. I'm interested to see how this year goes.

I'm still skeptical in most of the surprise teams this year for similar reasons. It's not to say some or all won't stay good. It's just that untill these teams prove it all the way to game 82, it ain't that easy.

'19-20 is exactly why people need to take the "results" this early in the season with a massive grain of salt. Although I do think this Buffalo team is different than the others and I can see them staying solid and making the playoffs. Maybe at closer to a .600 win% vs .700 but still

This will be an interesting measuring stick game for the Sabres. They’ve been one of the best offensive teams in the league so far, especially 5v5. They have the best shooting % in the league. But, they have also had a fairly soft schedule with maybe 2-3 quality wins so far. Now they get the Canes and Lightning B2B on the road, which will tell us a lot about where they actually are as a playoff hopeful.

I have no idea how good Buffalo is. In fact I have no idea how good we really are. I suspect the Sabres are skating above their pay grade and we haven’t yet skated up to ours.

I won’t find out anything tonight. Why? Because the freaking game is on ESPN+ and i refuse to add another payed tv service and risk exceeding my pay grade

I've watched a few Sabres games as my brother in-law is a Sabres fan and we were visiting him a week ago. I think there's a couple of differences vs. 19-20 Sabres.

1) Dahlin has come into his own and along with Power, they have a better defensive group (although they have some injuries now).
2) They have much more scoring depth right now. In 19-20, they basically had Eichel, Reinhart and Olofson(on the PP). Skinner struggled that year. It may not be sustainable, but right now they are getting offense from Thompson, Tuch, Olofson, Dahlin, Skinner, Okposo, Cozens, Peterka. Thompson and Dahlin drive the ship IMO, so if either of those hit a slump, it may not be sustainable.
3) Krueger isn't their coach.

Right now they are playing loose and having fun. Things have been going their way though so will be interesting to see what happens when they face some adversity, in terms of losing a few, guys slumping, etc...

Dahlin-Power (if they choose to play them together long-term which they may not) is basically going be somewhere in-between Niedermayer-Pronger and Jones-Werenski (best case/reasonable worst case). They’re set for a long time there.
