Comparing the Three:

PlayerHeightWeight
Sam Malinski5'11"190 lbs
Samuel Girard5'10"170 lbs
Cale Makar5'11"187 lbs

Is a 1-inch, 20-lb difference significant in hockey?

Not really for defensemen at the NHL level. Here's why:
  • 1 inch in height is negligible unless you're talking about reach in puck battles or visibility over crowds.
  • 20 lbs can matter more — it affects physical presence, stability in board battles, and ability to absorb contact. But in today's NHL, where speed and puck movement are prized, smaller defensemen (like Girard) still thrive.

Practical impact:

  • Girard is more reliant on skating, positioning, and quick puck movement to compensate for his size.
  • Malinski and Makar have slightly more mass, which helps in net-front battles or absorbing hits, but all three are mobile defensemen — not physical bruisers like a 6'4" stay-at-home type.

I think it’s just for the PP.

Even the D have the burgundy jerseys for the PP2 unit.

We need to see what jersey he wears for line rushes.

Man that's a heavy second power play. Val, Nelson, Coyle, and Gabe.

Trying to remember, but don't think we've seen Gabe on the right half wall before. If we have it's been a long time. His puck skills and passing are going to have to be on point, especially going D to D at the blueline.

No way, he doesn't play. G is basically saying welcome back here.

I don't think that's what Little G is saying. I can read lips and Little G said the following:

Little G: About time you're back, I'm starting to get used to being the enforcer on this team and I kind of like it. Don't get any bright ideas as to who has the big dick here.

Landy: I'm taller than 6'.

Little G: Welcome back boss.

Cale is definitely 6 foot now, he alluded to it during college, and he doesn't look 5'11" at all. Wouldn't be surprised if he's pushing 6'1".

I would be surprised if Girard is 5'10". Probably closer to 5'9".

The concern with Malsinki isn't necessarily his size.

The 20+ lbs can make a big difference though I agree.

Before Landy can play, he has to sit on the bench for an entire game. #Trusttheprocess
Then in game 4 still not quite ready to play, but he’s taking another step forward where he gets on the ice during TV timeouts to do a lap for the fans.

So golden boy Makar gets the benefit of the doubt that he's taller than listed size.

But you round down for Girard?

You remind me of my wife. She gives her boyfriend credit for the extra inch but I have to sit in the chair in the corner.

Yes all of that is true. Tell her I said hi and I'm free this weekend. :D

It kinda is TBH.

What I believe to be the real numbers: Girard is 5’8. Malinski is 5’9. Makar is 6’0.

I could buy 5'8" with G. Mabye a little over. I would guess 5'10" maybe 5'11" with Malinski. Looks a bit taller than 5'9" IMO but I'm just guessing.

My concern with Malinski is he can be a bit low intensity, and timid, and he's shown pretty much all year, especially down the stretch, a bad habit of rushing passes for turnovers when he feels pressure on the forecheck. Espeically after he's been hit once or twice.

I think that's why Bednar waited to play him at home first, where he can get better matchups.

He's said the way he handles a heavy forecheck is by using his feet, but I don't think he's nearly as good at evading the pressure by skating as Girard, and G struggled with it in Dallas.

First playoff game for him too. It'll be a good test. Maybe he rises to the occasion. That would be cool.

On a more serious note I don't think it's the Dallas forecheck causing turnovers and quick broken plays with chances in the danger areas that is the problem.

Its more the controlled zone entries and working the puck around and waiting for the defense to brain fart and lose coverage.

There's been a few times on the PP and at ES that a Dallas player with the puck near the goal line is just allowed to skate it to the slot or right in front of the goal unchallenged.

Malinski doesn't have to be a 5000IQ hockey genius to just stand around Blackwood and tie up a man.
