Ryan Reaves hit on Darnell Nurse. 5 min major + ejected (upd. Suspended 5 games)

It has to be a harsh punishment. 10 games minimum.....of having to play on the 1st line. Something that will really hurt the team. No suspension...come on...

I think that violates the Geneva Convention’s cruel and unusual punishments clause

But in all seriousness tbats an awful hit

this one is even worse than the Jeannot Boeser one.... .at least its more violent. 5 at least, same type of plugs.

in-person hearing, for sure. National game (NHL Network in the US) and it's Reaves.

Nurse was KO'd on contact.

It’s such a frustrating hit to see as a fan because Reeves had every opportunity to make a good solid clean hit, but just chose not to.
Yup. He's low enough right before contact to hit Nurse in the shoulder/chest and instead decides to rise up into the hit and gets almost entirely only head.

Probably because the only oiler who would look at reeves was lieing on the ice
Nurse is the only guy that wouldn't get completely caved against Reaves. Would you want Marner or Nylander fighting Nurse if the shoe was on the other foot?

This is exactly the point.

What's the purpose of fighting?

Players say it's to 'stick up for your teammate'. Do you only stick up for your teammate if the guy you fight is smaller than you?

Next time they play each other, assuming Reaves is in the lineup, the Oilers will call up some guy from the minors and say we sent our message, and send the guy back down. I personally don't believe in the argument that it's sticking up for your teammate when you force one guy to fight on behalf of your team for dirty or clean hits.

It makes no sense.

I don’t care for either team. Either you go through the chest legally or through the shoulder. Look how low nurse is vs Reaves. It’s a lot less predatory than you want it to be. Reaves didn’t stick anything out at all and when you throw a hit either you go through the shoulder or chest. I have a hard time seeing ANY extension to his head. Only thing I see is nurse putting himself in a vulnerable position and paying for it. Unfortunate circumstances and bad awareness.
So you post a picture confirming it was directly to the head and not through the body.

It makes no sense if you lack any sort of ability to look at it critically.

It's pretty simple stuff. There was no one on the ice who could fight on the biggest fighters in the league.

A scrub hits a (relatively) big name player, where there's no "through the body" defence.

Probably like 3-4 games.

So why fight at all? Don't even call up guys to fight. Players shouldn't have to answer for hits either.

It's cowardly everyone jumps the small guys and no one looks twice at the dirty guys. That's not policing the ice at all.

I don't think you know what a blindside hit is tbh. It isn't this.

It's actually the literal definition of a blindside hit. Nurse is skating straight behind the net and comes out from behind the net when Reaves is still in front of the net. What angle does Reaves have to come from vs Nurse's skating path to hit Nurse? More than 90 degrees behind. Reaves is looking for a big sneaky hit using the net/goalie to cover his approach, and ends up hitting almost 100% head.

We've seen Cooke throw hits like this a dozen times. It's garbage.

Dude had to have watched a Scott Stevens greatest concussions highlight reel on youtube before the game started....
