Confirmed with Link: Ryan O'Reilly Thread Part IV - O'Reilly SIGNS 2 yrs 12M (6M AAV) - No Arbitration

Its really not the craziest question. Why does anyone sign a long term deal? Why don't more players play the short term deals to UFA game? I keep bringing up Subban, why wouldn't he do the same thing that O'Reilly did and then absolutely rake it in on the open market in two years? Why is he probably going to sign some massive long term deal later this week? I know the quick and easy answer is security, and I agree, but why does literally every other player take the long term deal every time? If you are young, been relatively injury free your whole career and could probably overcome even one major injury then why not gamble on your talents and look to take the money every time?

Injuries happen. You could make 6M for 2 years and get concussed and never play in the league again.. then what? Or you could mak 5M for 8 years and get concussed and still make 40M. Simple really..

There's also the fact that by taking 2 year deals along the way you assume you will earn more with every contract, which means your play will have to improve all of the time. That is nearly impossible to do, and puts a lot of extra pressure to perform.

What a troll. Ideally he has an irrational hatred of the Avalanche. It seems like he's just trying to get hits though. I wish I was better at not getting worked up about people being wrong on the internet but it's just too hard.

Really, though - don't let Lambert get you riled up. That's his job. He's a jerk that generates comment and controversy. People go back to read what he says in order to cluck their tongues and mutter about how wrong he is. I know. I do it all the time, despite the obvious realization that I'm being played. Especially as an Avs fan, as he's been on a real roll for a while about how much Colorado sucks, regardless of what he's writing about.

We're down several people in our (tech) department right now, and are having difficulty finding qualified candidates to fill the positions.
This truly would be the best time for me to make demands.
At the same time, there is a set salary structure (no kidding), and they refuse to deviate from it (school district, with "step" structure, where you get a small raise most years, but no outstanding performance raise or bonus).

Tell them you have Selke-caliber technical abilities.

It's tough with a salary structure like that though. Sounds like you're either paid in line with whatever pay you started with in the organization, or by the number of candles on your cake.

I wish O'Reilly would trade that Byng in for more of this:

[NHL]2011020497-611-h[/NHL]

Because he's laying into the Avs for not bending over and taking whatever ROR & Co. started off with, which he describes as the team "lowballing" a player whose asking price was "a hair or three" too high. MacKinnon and future contracts in general have everything to do with this. He can't hang around in the territory of reason if it means being only mildly abrasive.

The assertion that Duchene might not be as good as Stastny or Backes is ... :amazed:. Anyone got the Advernsed Sterts to back that one up?!

stastny had better corsi than duchene last year (by 0.010%)..

Uh oh. We've made a terrible mistake. :sarcasm:

You guys sound a lot like Leafs fans last year before they collapsed.

I am not a fan of Corsi at all. But to completely dismiss it and make jokes about it will usually come back to haunt you IMO.

Avs have to do something about their poor shot differential or it will ultimately catch up to them somehow.

Because Roy is Sacco and going into next season with the exact same gameplan, roster and attitude. Our young players are not going to get better and Varly is going to end up like Rick DiPietro.

Varly doesn't have to turn into DiPietro for the Avs season to go south fast. If he turns into Marc-Andre Fleury, it'll likely be enough. Or if he puts forth his own performance of his two Avs' seasons prior to last season, it'll likely be enough.

Varlamov made more saves than all but three other NHL goaltenders faced shots last season. That can't continue.

Which is why I prefaced it with the fact that I don't think Roy is just going to sit around and let Varly get pummeled with shots. We have new players coming in and new spots will be fought over. Roy is OCD when it comes to coaching. He looks over more video then us. He knows what he has, he wants to win.

I don't disagree with any of that. Varlamov is the one player who can't have a meaningful slippage in play this upcoming season.

Well, EJ's play needs to stay where it was last season also.

We've always got Berra. I'm not worried. :sarcasm:

Actually, the only thing I worry about with Varly is an injury. I don't think he will regress that much, if at all, because I don't think last year was a fluke. Just my opinion, though.

Varly won't have the distraction of the Olympics in Russia or the Bicycle girl.

On the flip side, we won't have Jiggy to step in and calm the team down with a ballsy performance like he did at the beginning of last year. But then again Jiggy was fairly non-existent at the end of the year, Varly really carried the team at the end. So I think he can do it.

There is nothing wrong with carrying concerns about getting outshot but the whole Corsi thing is becoming the ultimate throw down argument like "it's for the children" and "it's God's will". And these columnists who write their sensationalist angles and justify it with "it's Corsi" so any counter arguments need not apply are the ones who are destroying any objective use the statistic has.

Varly might not have Vezina stats again but I'm not worried about him. I saw him enough with my own eyes and he's amazing. Roy knew it too when he gave him 30 million dollars in January.

It's also bizarre that they think we can't improve on those problems either. Our core is only getting more ripe and we are adding good players.

we did address lot of the problems but not the main one imo: puck moving on D, especially left side. some of their gazillion D might surprise though. and maybe they are able to swing a deal for very good LDs that are set to hit UFA, as of now.

Never said anything like that. I rate coach (!!!) Roy pretty highly.

But we lost one of our best possession players in Stastny (even PAP was pretty good IIRC) and Varly last year had an inhuman year.
Our D played above expectations. MacLean and even Sacco both had great Jack Adams worthy first seasons and than struggled in the second season. Roy certainly is no Sacco but I rated MacLean very highly before last year as well and it collapsed.

We overachieved. Period. Our young team should improve enough to get to that level next year but who knows. And our old players are not exactly pieces we can lean on. No one knows how Hejda, Stuart, Iggy, Tangs and Briere will do / hold up.

All I am saying is that making a disproportionate amout of fun out of statistics and Corsi often comes back to make you look foolish pretty soon. Especially if you ice the kind of defense that we do.

Same thing happened to the Leafsfans last year.
I remember reading posts just like that over there at that time.
Then it fell apart and people had to eat their words.

That is all I am saying. This season is a huge questionmark. And if everything crumbles than our poor shot differential (if not fixed) will be a big reason for it.

It's not good logic when teams perform well to say they over achieve. If we where full of veterans maybe, but young teams striving to define themselves cannot over achieve! We overcame, had some bad growing pains, and did what the team goal was... We limped into the playoffs.
Seriously a healthy Avs team does much better last years PO
So if we improve our team d and that should happen, no reason at all to not also improve pp and PK stats, and corsi and more multi goal wins. Honestly Avs have a ton of offensive talent, and if we don't lose a ton of core player games to injuries we will be the team to best in west.

Was Varlamov beating his dog last year? (Joem, let's drop the 'e' - inhuman.) ;)

I agree on Corsi. Should be used judiciously, and probably not at all to describe defensive play.
