Erskine had been playing as a #3/4 for them through the regular season, and had actually been doing really well. He came "back to earth" during that series

Most Caps fans in the series thread suggest he's a scrub d-man lol. But that may be testament to the Caps defense in the first place if John freaking Erskine is the team's 4th best d-man.

I agree that the team, and Cally, desperately miss Dubinsky. He was the perfect winger for Cally. That said, I disagree on the notion that the team is outchanced, and if they are, I suggest taking a look at the competition he's facing. Torts always, always, puts his line out against the teams #1. He played nearly every shift against OV's line in the past round, and that line's forechecking and cycling was a large part of why Ovechkin was kept off the scoreboard. Cally may not have lit up the offense in that series, but he had more than a positive impact on it.

I disagree that he had a positive impact in the series, but he does unfortunately get tough assignments that are way beyond his capabilities. I blame that on management for constructing the roster however.

That issue isn't with Cally. That's with Torts and Sather. You don't blame the tool when the user makes a mistake.

See previous post aha. :)

Laich and Horcoff are still very good players. Zubie had 2 really good seasons, and never scratched that again. He got slow.

Laich in 09-10, Horcoff in 07-08 and Zubrus in 06-07.

All three played significant minutes relative to talent level and leeched off of superior linemates. (Laich with Semin, Horcoff with Hemsky and Zubrus with Ovechkin)

These types of players are dime a dozen IMO. Meaning they're average players who play 1000 games being a professional. Ryan Callahan will hit that level too, but that doesn't mean he should be playing top 5 minutes on a team on cup aspirations.

I agree with most of your list, but look at those names. Those are some god damn good names to have on your hockey club.

I think you have unrealistic expectations for a Top 9 (like, Pittsburgh unrealistic), and I don't think a team needs to be that stacked to win

I expect the Rangers to win the Stanley Cup. The Rangers should be a contending team and should be the favorites each year with the payroll and Lundqvist factor. If that is being unrealistic, so be it.

Hes a versatile player. I don't know why you're holding that against him.

And if he has a single goal tomorrow, he'll be tied for 2nd on the team, along with our new #1 center. 8 games is a tiny sample size. One hot streak and he goes from goat to hero. It's a bloody joke the way we use revisionist mentality based on point totals.

I don't question his versatility, but his overuse and long stretches of poor play. He is somewhat in the class of Oshie and M.Richards and they don't nearly get the same ice time despite being superior players.

Callahan with the eye test and stats say he's underachieved in post season past 2 yrs. He's been good in 1 playoff game in 8 tries this year, which was in gm 7 against the Caps.

Jagr at this stage of his career brings Callahan's impact? Chris "lazy" Stewart?

Selanne, Kessel? Those are threats for 35+ goals a season, as is Iginla. Oshie is a good comparison, NOT Jagr, and not Kessel.

1. Yes. Jagr was Dallas's best forward in the regular season. He was playing with scrubs in Boston and just recently got moved up with Marchand and Bergeron. I'd give the benefit of the doubt to the HHOF for sure.

2. Chris Stewart is lazy, but he is still an effective hockey player with goal scoring prowess. Tied for 5th in West goal scoring, I wish we had lazy players.

The question asked was to find teams where Callahan would be a 3rd liner on and I simply named players from teams where Callahan would be a 3rd line player on.....

He had a good game and was wrecking havoc before things got out of hand. Good game for Callahan and hope he builds up on it.

^^^Posts like that are why you can argue with Kershaw.

You may think he's out to lunch half the time, but he won't outright deny what's in front of him.

Callahan is an excellent, two way player but he's overrated by a lot of Rangers fans. He's really just an average playoff guy. Nothing more.

Wow........ Callahan can play on my team any day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

I can't imagine a team in the league that wouldn't want him on the ice in the playoffs.

Any team would love to add a 2nd line PKing forward to their lineup.

They'll be mediocre forever if they rely on him to play top 5 minutes league wide.

Tell me please, if not him, then who? Realistically, who are we going to give the toughest minutes on the team to? Nash? Stepan? Brassard? Those are all offensive players. Stepan gets by, but he's no means Selke caliber. Not every roster has a Toews or Bergeron, or even Datsyuk. Callahan is a winger, who can play any type of game, he's a gem, he single-handedly got us back in this game today. If we had better options, I wouldn't argue with you, but when we don't, why would you argue against it? We aren't the Pens, or Hawks, so what's the argument here? Be mad at Sather, not Callahan or Tortorella. Look at how he uses Boyle, that should tell you more about this inept roster rather than the coach or player. You steer the ship the best way you know how.

So, as far as discussing Cally beyond arguing with Kershaw, has anyone noticed that while he used to score tons of dirty goals in front of the net, so far they've been almost all highlight reel off the rush?

just a few examples from this year only

Not even all of them. The Captain seriously has a thing for the dramatic.

1 goal, 8 hits, which is a joke he had about 15, infinite leadership and heart

I can't stress enough on my displeasure with Glen Sather, Jeff Gorton and Gordie Clark running this team. It's not entirely Callahan's fault, in fact none of the blame should go to him. For one, yes I do expect Rick Nash to be leading the team in minutes. And he should absolutely change his playing style to accommodate him playing 22 mins instead of an inferior player like Callahan getting those minutes. Look at the transition Ilya Kovalchuk had when he joined the Devils, he can now play both wings and is the best PKing forward in the entire league. For a player who is touted as the franchise savior and a player who the Rangers gave up many high assets in return, I absolutely expect Rick Nash to be averaging 23+ mins in all situations, the role Callahan currently has.

Also Derek Stepan is an elite defensive centerman and is a much better player the Callahan in everything besides blocking shots and physical play. But, I can't complain since Torts is using him perfectly in all situations. I think Stepan should be tried on the point as the RH triggerman.

Kovalchuk isn't even the best PKing forward on his own team, let alone the entire league.

He was on the ice for 9 PPGA and tied for 1st in league in SH points with 4 points.

Last season, he was a + player on the PK. 5 SH points and on ice for only 4 PPGA. This while playing nearly 90 mins of PK time. Maybe not best, but clearly the most efficient PKer in the league.

Don't see blocking shots like Cally or Boyle

That's a testament to a player's defensive IQ to not flail around and block shots, but rather smoothly transition the puck up the ice. Like Kopitar, Kovalchuk, Zetterberg, Nielsen, etc. I don't get why more teams don't use their star players on the PK.

I like Kovy by the way, sometimes you have to sacrifice your body to stop a good oppurtunity, he's definitely the most dangerous pker in the league
