Injury Report: Ryan Callahan (2/5: Wearing full contact jersey in practice)

Cuz Talbot had already dropped his gloves and was trying to punch Callahan in the face

I understand. I've played, and I know hockey is an emotional sport. But hes got to be smarter than that in that situation - and Im not just saying this solely because he got injured.

The game was 2-0 at that point, and the Rangers were in complete control. Why succumb to Talbot's ****, and risk giving the Flyer's some jump?

Or take yourself off the ice for 5 minutes when you're your teams best penalty killer and captain. In exchange for a chump like Talbot.

It's odd that for the first 5 games of the year, everyone was talking about how Callahan wasn't playing well, but now that he's hurt, we're doomed. Big deal he's hurt. It's a shame, but it's not the end of the world.

Every team seems to be dealing with injury problems to key personnel. It is part and parcel of a physical game. The Flyers are missing Hartnell enormously: as much as we all detest him, his presence is a major part of the team's identity. Without his personality and edginess, the Flyers don't seem the same.

We cannot replace the intangibles that Cally brings to the team and aside from those qualities, we don't have the depth to replace his production on the PP or PK. He will be sorely missed.

Kreider, when he returns and as soon as he regains his game fitness, which might mean some more time with the Whale, becomes immensely important to the team.

I know one thing, I don't want to see Newbury back up.

I think Torts needs to move Gabby back to the line with Stepan. We need some production from our 2nd line. We can argue all we want about whether Cally is a 2nd or 3rd line player but the fact is that he was playing 2nd line and scored 29 goals last year. We need some balance in our lines, now more than ever. Hags back to the line with Richards and Nash. Step with Gabby and for now perhaps Ferriero. 3rd line cobbled together from our disparate parts.

You can plan and plan and think you have everything in place only to get derailed by the unexpected. That is the nature of sports. We'll have to see what happens, how the team handles it and who steps up.

come on now... he wasn't goaded into a fight with Talbot, it was an explosive, reactive situation.

Tablot went after Callahan instantly. There was no time for any other decision but to defend himself.

Would you rather the captain of our team turtle up and take a beating at the hand of a Pejorative Slur like Talbot? In over 20 yrs of watching hockey i've never seen a player apply an arm bar to another player during a fight. Watch the fight and you'll see a deliberate effort on Talbot to target Callahan's arm! Another graduate from the Alexander Semin school of hockey fighting.

because Callahan isn't that kind of player who would turtle from a fight, especially with someone like Talbot. People would be all over Callahan if he turtled last night and we'd probably have people calling for him to be stripped of his captaincy.

On top of that, Talbot pummeling a turtling Callahan could give just as much momentum to the Flyers

He hasnt been playing well, especially at even strength. But his track record suggests he will play well.

This team needs bodies right now capable of handling top 9 forward minutes. We just lost another one, and its going to hurt.

Uh oh, adversity. Time to fold!

Some of you folks are shameful.

Not to pile on but I agree with you. Teams like the Penguins have been decimated by injuries the past few seasons yet always manage to be highly competitive in the East. Injuries happen. Good teams persevere. Fans have no control over the situation, but if you want to get off the bus, the door is that way.

Most of the people on this board are over-emotional yahoos, who cares what they think?

Youre painting this picture that the only 2 courses of action were to fight Talbot, or get down on the ice and kiss his skates. I'd have preferred he wrapped Talbot up and not gone that route, for several reasons - chief among them being the climate of the game at that point.

I think that you're playing a nitpicking role with the benefit of hindsight and it's easy to proclaim exactly what a player should have done when you're sitting on the couch watching the game. Edit: I don't mean this to be a personal attack either, it's not like I'm not also sitting around offering my opinion the same way. I just think this is a situation that's been broken down to a level that's not useful or realistic.

99 times out of 100 nothing bad happens in that situation and we don't care and life goes on. The one time something bad happens, it's silly to go back and talk like it was the easiest thing in the world to do something different or know how to perfectly play the situation so that not only does Callahan not get hurt but he diffuses any attempt by the Flyers to gain momentum, etc etc. Callahan did what nearly every player in the NHL would do in the same situation, there was just an unfortunate result this time

OT, I know, but do you hope you can make a living playing hockey in the future? If so, I hope you will. Good luck to you, and good luck to Cally.

OT myself and it's always a long shot but I hope to. Going the college route. Thanks.

Praying for good news today. Fingers crossed.

By the way, its hockey, injuries happen. This really was more of a freak accident than an intent to injure.

Edit: Was just reading a few pages back people were saying a dislocation was better news than a seperated shoulder. Couldnt be further from the truth. Dislocations make the person prone to reoccurrence unless the surgery is done. Which is why almost every pro athlete that gets a dislocation gets the surgery. 5 months vs a seperated shoulder which could possible only be a month

You have a point here, but if you'll notice, I've said nothing about the injury. Sure, its the reason we're talking about it so much, but I still think it'd been awfully stupid to do a 5 minute Callahan/Talbot trade-off when we have the lead.

99x out of 100 in that situation the opposing player doesn't apply an arm bar to his opponent. Watch a video of the fight, and you'll see a deliberate attempt on the part of Talbot to target and wrench Callahan's arm.

The reality is playoffs is what really matters so IF Cally is out for a while it really blows bad but its not the end of the world as long as he is ok say the last month of the yr and into the playoffs

till then lets see what this team is made of. I said at the start of the yr its a short season so middle of the pack may occur but the Kings proved it doesnt matter what seed you finish

deliberate attempt? that seems a bit much.

Its the same thing as last year! Remember when our D Men were dropping like flies, taking forever to come back from injuries? Most panicked and called the season over after 7 games! Some of us with the voice of reason said, its an opp for other people to step up until we get health and thats exactly what we did...Our fan base or 80% is a whining bunch..I cant even fathom how half of you think..Lets get Kreider back and go from there..I gaurentee we play 600 hockey w/out Callahan..

The Penguins lost Sidney Crosby and survived. Even with Malkin, and Neil...

We still have Marian Gaborik, Rick Nash, and Henrik Lundqvist.

I think we'll be ok losing Ryan Callahan for a little while...

i didn't see the game but reading this i was dubious that talbot would intentionally try to hurt callahan. i never think of talbot as a dirty player. i watched the clip on the webnets and i'm pretty sure it was just bad luck. talbot was holding on to cally's arm fell over. i hope it's not a serious injury. any word yet?

hopefully just a little while. but this lack of news is kind of worrying.

deliberate attempt? that seems a bit much.

look at the video... Talbot grabs Callahans left arm with both of his arms, he's jerking and pulling on Callahans arm until they eventually fall and all of Tablot's weight comes down on Callahan, while he holds his left arm in an armbar...

What exactly was Tablot trying to accomplish there?

LMAO at deliberate attempt to injure. As soon as Talbot realized Callahan was hurt he stopped and called for the trainer. That didn't look like anyone I ever knew that had malicious intent.

Get over it, it was a freak injury.

How many times have you seen 2 players that are not known to fight have an awkward moment when they do so? I have seen it in person hundreds of times, and 99.99999999% of the time the result is a situation where you can bust a team mates balls for the rest of the season, not a potentially serious injury.

If you played the game, you would have definitely seen numerous moments like that. They make for great joking points in the bar afterwards and beyond.
