Guess it depends on if the Ducks think he's worth burning an ELC year or not (if that matters to him), or if he really really wants to go to a particular team (or doesn't want to go to Anaheim). I suspect they'll offer him the chance this season, and if he says no they'll quickly move him for a pick like they did with Thrun.
It's more about if the Ducks are willing to guarantee him NHL games to end the season: that's likely the only way Colangelo signs after Western Michigan is done. If they aren't, he will run out the clock to UFA or they'll trade his rights to a team willing him to give him games like they did with Thrun.

If they lose him because they are not willing to burn a year off his ELC then that is just dumb.

Top 10 in goals in the NCAA. As a Ducks fan I kind of expect him to go the UFA route, but the Ducks would be a perfect spot for him.

Here are the things the Ducks need at forward:
  • Size
  • Guys who can pull the trigger
  • Right handed RW
He fills all of those spots. If Henrique and/or Vatrano get traded at the deadline he has a clear path to a top 6 spot on the Ducks to finish the season.

Lol in my defense he regressed in every facet of the game in his junior year after not being that impressive in his freshman and sophomore years.

In another note, your theme is killing my eyes lol.
I was just messing with ya. Glad to see Cola turn it around and find his game again. Bright future in Anaheim with Verbeek (who I am salty about leaving Detroit, but he deserved his own club)

Ducks won't be seeing the playoffs for the 7th year in a row. We are more patient than most... only the Red Wings and Sabres have us beat.
Wings fan here: i cannot believe we are finally seeing light at the end of that long, dark tunnel of Holland hell

Colangelo was done dirty by his coaches in his junior season by being separated with his sophomore linemates and moved down the line. That's why Colangelo left Northeastern for WMU through the transfer portal.

On a tangent, fellow Ducks NCAA prospect Kukkonen feels like he's also being done dirty by the coaches. Last year, he scored 18g as a freshman. This year, he's only got 1 goal in 25 games. I think Kukkonen could be going to a different program next season... maybe WMU?

Kukkonen being a Minnesota kid seems like the type that would transfer to Minnesota State or St Cloud State. I could see Omaha or Western Michigan too though, Omaha gets plenty of Minnesotans and Ferschweiler is going after more of them since he's from Minnesota.

Prospect Highlight: Sam Colangelo

  • Colangelo
    • Age = 22
    • Height = 6'2
    • Weight = 209 lbs
    • Position = RW
    • Shoots = Right
    • Drafted: = 2020, Rd 2 (36th Overall)
    • Draft team = Anaheim

Colangelo was generating hype in this draft season as he finished third in team scoring with 58 points for the Chicago Steel. That team had several players who were drafted in the 2020 and 2021 draft such as 2021, 1st overall pick D Power, as well as forwards Brisson, Farrell, Coronato, Samoskevich and Fontaine. Central Scouting's 2020 final ranking for NA skaters had Brisson at 20th and Colangelo at 31st. Anaheim took the gamble at pick 36.

Sam's collegiate career had a couple of lumps, but the gamble looks like it's paying off for the Ducks at the moment - Anaheim still needs to sign the young man. His injury in his freshman year truly disguised Colangelo's talent. Although his junior year was a step back, Sam was still productive on the scoresheet. A big reason why his junior year did not take another step forward was because the coaching staff separated him from his linemates from his sophomore season. There was great hype about the trio staying together and reaching new heights, but it was not so.

The step back in his junior year could be seen as Colangelo being held down. Sam had thought about turning pro after his junior season, but wanted to improve his game. During the 2023 summer Dev camp in Anaheim, Colangelo looked like he was a man on a mission as he was very noticeable on the ice in goal scoring and tenacity. The future Western Michigan Bronco had a well laid plan in place to improve his stock when his junior season ended. Here are some article excerpts on Colangelo from Medium:

Colangelo considered turning pro after the 2022–23 season, but ultimately decided to play another year of college was the right choice. One thing was clear to him, though. His time at Northeastern was done.
Western Michigan head coach Pat Ferschweiler had seen him play when he was a coach for Team USA at the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup in 2018, so there was already a level of familiarity between the two.
“I’m a guy who likes to shoot the puck and likes to score goals,” he said. “When you see (Western Michigan’s history) — their goals per game is in the top five every season that Coach Ferschweiler has been here — obviously, that’s a testament to the players that they’ve had, but also the coaching staff and what they’re doing. That doesn’t happen by accident.”

There are two Western Michigan players ranked in the top-10 in NCAA goal scoring today, one of them is Colangelo. Sam's gamble to transfer definitely paid off.

NCAA goal scoring, (Feb 13, 2024).png

Currently, as of Feb 13th, with 19 goals on the season so far, Colangelo ranks tied for seventh in the NCAA is goal scoring. The top goal scorers in the NCAA are fellow Ducks prospect Cutter Gauthier and projected #1 overall 2024 draft prospect Macklin Celebrini with 23 goals.

That is Colangelo's third NCHC "Forward of the Week" recognition, as per the Rink Live. The talent was always there. Staying in college and transferring to a program designed to help Colangelo succeed as a scorer is going to pay him dividends into the near and, hopefully, far future.

With the turnover the Ducks will have after this season, or sooner at the trade deadline, at forward with the presumed losses of C/LW Henrique and RW Silfverberg, there exists a path to the NHL. Conflate that with the need for goal scorers at the NHL level for the Ducks, then the path to the NHL becomes closer in reach. Let us hope GM Verbeek is able to sign and help Colangelo shine with the Ducks' organization.

Is this the sign of pro potential or an upper classman dominating younger players?

It will be interesting to see how his game translates to pro hockey.

His production was kept down at Northeastern, lower than it should have been, but I think part of his production at Western is a result of being older. Doesn't mean he can't be a productive NHLer, he was good in junior with Chicago, but something to keep in mind

Kukkonen’s aunt is our AD. He’s not going anywhere. His production this year has nothing to do with coaching. He’s hurt right now (probably out until the start of conference playoffs) but when he was healthy he was playing 18-20 minutes most nights. He’s just been completely snake bitten

Going from 18 goals to 1 goal is more than snake bitten. Kukkonen's been playing on the 3rd line. When he returned to the lineup, he was still on the 3rd line. But I digress.

================

Colangelo's AHL debut had him finishing 1g + 1a = 2pts. He was playing on the 2nd line. Also, he gained the trust of the coaching staff to play him for a few shifts in the 3v3 OT.

With all due respect, I’d like to think I know what’s happening at my school a bit better than you do. Kukkonen played 17 minutes in both the conference championship game and the national tournament game despite them being his first two games in months. He never played third line minutes this year. I don’t care what the line chart says

He’s in the portal anyway in spite of his Aunt being the AD. If I had to guess it’s Anaheim in his ear trying to get him to a bigger program

Maybe you don't really know what's up since Kukkonen is transferring to Wisconsin. Who knows what else don't you really know what's going on?

Anyhow, like I said before, Colangelo made a great decision to move from Northeastern to Western Michigan b/c of a setback in his development. a fellow Duck prospect, Kukkonen, should follow suit and he did.

Oh dear lord. Yeah I was wrong. I made an educated guess based on his strong family ties to the program and he did something else. It’s almost as if it’s impossible for me to have concrete insight into what another human being is thinking.

What I DO have concrete insight into is how he was used here. You’ve claimed multiple times that he had his role diminished and was playing on the third line when it’s a literal fact that this wasn’t the case.

That’s what I called you out on. That’s why I said I know my school and my program better than you. Bringing up something else entirely is not the “gotcha” you think it is

Wonder if they're "trading" Kukkonen for Whitelaw or Stramel?
