RW Matvei Michkov (2023, 7th, PHI) Part 6

He made some nice plays and scored some goals and also caused at least 2 odd man rushes, both shorthanded and one ended up in the back of their net.

Once the flyers get better they will have better players/goalies to stop the chances against them because of him, or even eliminating them before they fully develop.

Nah. He's pretty great already.

It's hard to be mtl fan here. Wish you the best.

Demidov and Michkov on the same line would've been bonkers.
Followed by Suzuki, Slafkovsky, Caufield as the 2nd line? :amazed:

Oh Montreal, what could've been.......

How can you hate this guy? He’s short, not particularly fast but just an absolute genius with the puck. Most unique skillset we’ve seen enter the NHL in awhile, IMO.

I don’t think he needs a typical 1C to be successful. A guy like prime Couts might be perfect. Help cover defensively, win draws but also let Michkov handle the puck.

Question to me is if Konecny is the right wing for him longterm. Going to defer to Flyers fans on that

It was a question early in the season I think but they’ve been rolling lately

all of MM, TK, Foerster, Brink, Tippett, Hathaway are right shots.

Foerster-Cates-Brink have been together for a long time and do well.

That leaves TK and Tippett as only options with Pelletier as dark horse with left shot. Pelletier seems more like a passer than a scorer judging by jr stats so he could fit well with Tippett. He is on a line with him now along with Poehling (until Luchanko arrives?).

So that leaves only TK to play with MM.

Foerster-Cates-Brink
MM- Couturier-TK
Pelletier-Luchanko-Tippett
X- Poehling-Hathaway

He’s tied for the rookie points lead. He’ll probably need to distance himself from the other two the last couple of weeks of the season, but I refuse to believe that a player who leads the NHL in rookie goals and points is 100% certain to finish fourth in Calder Voting, and has no chance to finish higher.

If so, a lot of voters simply have closed minds and are voting for their favorite stories instead. Still work needed, but Michkov should be right in this.

Have you seen the Habs play D? They actually need Reinbacher to “hit” more than Michkov at this point as they lucked into Demidov.

It's not really a gap between them but is it really that much of a stretch to see why most voters have the other 3 as picks?

Hutson is having a top 3 rookie d season of all time while being the top dman of a playoff (or almost) team that wasn't expected to make it.

Wolf played like a top 10 goalie in the league this season and the Flames were a wildcard team for most of the season with him playing. The went from an 81 pt team to a 90ish pt team.

Celebrini is playing as a legit top like center despite having no support, scoring at a .88pts per game pace.

Michkov has had a fantastic season but saying it's the 4th best rookie campaign of this year isn't a knock on him at all.

I'm not saying it's wrong if they are ahead of him. I understand why. I think what Michkov has done isn't really like far behind the other three, if at all, and he should be in the same discussion as them. I understand what he's doing might not be as rare as an 18 year old center, or a 20 year old defenseman, or a upper 1/3 of the NHL starting goalie statistically, but ultimately if he has the best season then he should win the Calder.

People keep repeating this narrative, but if they took Michkov (which they wouldn’t have because he basically made it known he wouldn’t have signed there), they wouldn’t have drafted Demidov - it would’ve been one of the D - Yakemchuk, Parekh, Silayev, Dickinson, Buium.

I mean, you can believe they would’ve if you want, but there is no way Hughes was going to take two smallish offensive wingers in back to back years with high picks when Caufield and Suzuki are already in the top-six and part of the future.

Yeah it's a strong pool this year for the Calder, nothing to be ashamed of finishing 4th, or 2nd or 3rd.

Well the other 3 are clearly having better seasons right now while playing tougher role/positions on their respective teams. Even if he has something like 12 pts in the last 8 games it still wouldn't be enough IMO. Still a strong rookie season.

Hutson doesn’t play defense and is a secondary assist merchant, not sure what you’re on about lol. Another Habs fan in a Michkov thread, cant imagine why.

Can’t believe Poehling is still in the league lol. Not because of his play or anything (idk), but it’s just shocking to see his name. He was on the high speed train to Bustville when he left MTL lmao. How’s he playing these days?

I actually like Michkov and wanted the Habs to draft him. But ok, Hutson is top 5 in all categories for defenseman this year, Michkov is not anywhere near that as a winger... Maybe he's good at having secondary assists because he's good at having the puck and making passes? Eh!?

Hutson doesn’t play defense you’re arguing in a Michkov thread bud. His defensive analytics are horrific. Posting more bs about Hutson doesn’t make you right.

The secondary assist thing has to be one of the dumbest takes I’ve ever seen on this site, and it’s the same posters repeating it over and over. What a hill to die on lmao. It’s almost as dumb as the “relative plus-minus” thing by the same crowd 😂. That’s how you know these people don’t even actually think about the shit they post lol. They’re just saying anything to get a reaction.
