I was just mentioning that on the Flyers board. Another Flyers podcast said something similar to what you believe too, so there seems to be some conflicting information floating around.

But if Seravalli is hearing a "Yes, it is possible to buy out his contract" from the NHL, then I will take Frank's word for it.

It's definitely possible to buy it out, just a question of who is allowed to pay for it.

Seravalli on Nasty Knuckles: (@ 19:02)

- He checked in with the league on Thursday and confirmed that a buyout of Michkov's contract is possible, but the league would need some proof to see that his contract was satisfied.

Maybe we see Comcast flex it's financial muscles. Not that I am in a particular rush to get him to Philadelphia.

Just in case, they would be flexing those against these guys: Gazprom - Wikipedia

Forgive my primitive business assessment, but Comcast's Wikipedia page indicates that Comcast has both a larger revenue and operating income than Gazprom. :naughty:

But it's not about bullying each other. It's about SKA/Gazprom/whoever getting some cash back for a player they are seemingly destined to lose for nothing.

I mean that in this situation flexing financial muscles wouldn't be about a couple of millions, as these type of companies buy peanuts for approximately the same sum.

Bettman would never allow an individual team to buy-out a KHL contract. Doing as such would create an unfair competitive advantage in favor of weathly owners. Plus I dont think he wants to give the KHL any more credence/legitimacy. Direct negotiation would do that.

The only way I see it happening is if the buy-out amount is counted against the cap.

I don't disagree with your reasoning, but one of the most well-connected NHL insiders claims to have gotten confirmation that says otherwise.

Does anyone have a list of best D+1 seasons in KHL/RSL history? Would love yo track his production versus historical comparable. Thanks!

Wasn't there some rule about how the team (it's owners) wouldn't be able to pay for the contract buyout?

I could be wrong, but I read that on here a few weeks ago.

There is a part of their contracts that states the contract can't be bought out by the league or team it must be the player. Now I'm sure theres a way he can take a loan out on future earnings with Comcast being the cosign or some kind of way around it. But 100% a team can't directly buyout his contract.

Honestly, I believe the advantage provided would be miniscule compared, for example, to tax discrepancy. It's not soccer with it's massive transfer fees, Michkov's contract may not even cost a $1M to buy out.

There is zero reason to be buying his contract out at this stage. Perhaps in his last year, if the rebuild goes miraculously well. Why burn 2 years of his ELC on a shit team?
You don’t, it’s just fun to dunk on all the morons who thought there was risk about him not coming over

Ugh, I looked forward to the Flyers not getting him for 3 years when Torts is gone. I feel like we have a greater chance of ruining him than his KHL team...

Because Tortorella "ruined" young players like Callahan, Stepan, Panarin and Lecavalier or more recently Frost, Konecny and Tippett?

Seems like playing for John Tortorella might be a reason Michkov would want to come over sooner rather than later.

All I know about Torts is that he tends to rub players the wrong way, moreso than a lot of other coaches. I don't think he would ruin him talent wise, but if he ends up scratching him the day his mother comes to watch him play (like he did with Sanheim), I can see Michkov being upset by this. And Michkov can easily just go back to the KHL as leverage.

Torts is great coach, but I dont think you can dispute his relationships with star players certainly seems to lead to many of them waving good bye to the org. Torts is the coach you hire when your older/established/mature/vet stars are asleep at the wheel. Torts is the coach the flyers needed when Giroux, Voracek, and Simmonds still had gas in the tank. He gets the most out of grown men or players people didn't expect to be a star. He forces players to grind out Ws. His track record with kids is not as encouraging.

Lecavalier hated torts. He said he doesn't now, but he really did in 03. PLD demanded a trade because of Torts. Panarin who was a 26 year old rookie(in other words when he joined CBJ, he was not a kid and also not developed by torts) left, Bob headed down south, Duchene hated torts and said "toodles". Laine hated him too and I imagine losing another top talent was not an option for cbj so they asked torts to step down. Torts star retention looks.... poor. His employees may perform well, but they also seem to be heading to different company the first chance they get.

That said, great dude and a great coach. Still, I am not sure I want him around Michkov. I think a dude like Bruce Boudreau who not only can help us win, but also has relevant history with young star players specifically from Russia would be pretty great.

I personally think Michkov is the type of players Torts loves. The same crazyness about hockey, the same willingness to fight till the end, probably even the same nastiness.

Yeah, Matvei loves his nifty moves like Michigan goals etc, and Torts used to say he hates such moves, but I don't think Tortorella is that stupid. He just didn't have players who were able to regularly execute such moves. To me he doesn't like young players who loves nifty moves, but hates physical contacts, going to dirty areas and fighting for the puck, like I don't know, maybe Zegras (I can be wrong about him though). Michkov is actually the opposite kind of youngsters.

He doesn’t rub players wrong, he gets the most out of them and pushes them further than they could push themselves. 99% of his former players respect the hell out of him and are glad they were coached by him. Just in the moment it sucks occasionally.

The thing is, if you’re the skilled guy with nifty moves that can score points then you better do just that when you’re out on the ice. That was Torts issue with Frost: he’d been told he was a high skilled playmaker guy and yet he wasn’t doing any of that or being effective at it when he was out there. Torts just wants the guys to play to their strength, hence Provorov trying to be encouraged to be more defensive minded and taken off Pp, Hayes taken away from center where there’s not defensive responsibilities, etc

Well, so far I’ve been right about everything for months on the kid. It’s played out exactly how I said it would too. It was laughable that he’d overtake Bedard, he wouldn’t be chosen ahead of Carlsson or Fantilli, and as I’ve said for months, he would probably drop outside of the Top 5 and we shouldn’t be surprised if he drops outside of the Top 10.

Where have I been wrong on him?? Since the lottery, it’s pretty much been, if he gets by San Jose, he could very well drop outside of the Top 7. It’s basically been San Jose or Washington. That’s not a “Generational Talent.” That’s teams and scouts wanting to see him create space this season and stop relying on his shot from the outside. Two things he just hasn’t done. It was inevitable he’d drop from #2.

Haven’t you found it interesting he’s dropped like he has already, if he was this supposed “Generational Talent?”

Both of those players, especially Nuchushkin, was supposed to be a generational talent too. Both had NHL strength too. There is no way Michkov is anywhere near the KHL ten years ago, when the league was by far, the 2nd best league in the world, as Nichushkin did. Podkolzin tore up the U18s and had the NHL strength and frame.

Never once have I said he’s not extremely skilled. Just that his game doesn’t work in the NHL. It’s completely understandable if a team thinks they can fix that. Happens all the time. Detroit thought they could fix Zadina from playing that game. But for anyone to suggest he’s not going to be “Boom or Bust” is ridiculous at this point.
Nobody EVER mentioned generational with Nich... wtf?

Where were you wrong? Nich isn't half the prospect Mich was during draft years

Smaller, superstar wingers of the past 20-30 years:

Kane
Panarin
Marchand
Kaprizov
Gaudreau
Kucherov
Bure
St Louis
Fleury
Kariya

Do you see Michkov being as good as these players, not as good, or better than all?

And have I missed any on this list?
His ceiling is certainly higher than all these guys during their draft years. If I had to bet I'd say he ends up pretty even with Kane and Kuch as a safe projection

He'll be the 2nd best player in this draft. He fell due to no fault of him nor is it skill related

Taresnko in draft year fell to 16 because KHL fear at the time and Tarasenko wasn't touted as him

There will be a lot of teams that will be kicking themselves in few years.

Why « he’ll be » and not « he is »?

A few teams with questionable reputations decided to take safer approach as if they were expected to flirt with Lord Stanley within next 3 yrs.

Imagine if he comes over earlier. Things change.

Can an American bank give a loan to buy out a KHL contract, I wonder. I don't mean Michkov's situation, but in general, because I'm pretty sure Michkov isn't going to buy out his SKA contract. And why would he wanna do it? To sign a 3 year ELC? Yeah, the dream comes true...
