New York Islanders: Mathieu Darche is named GM of the New York Islanders

Where was that reported?
Never heard/saw anything ever about Malkin being involved in any hockey personnel decision
Ethan Sears the Isles beat writer for the NY Post had it in a column he wrote soon after Lou was not renewed.

It was reported that Lou made an offer to Nelson and negotiated with Palmieri, but we don't really know what was offered. And ultimately neither guy signed, which means the offers weren't enough. So, either Lou changed his ways from some prior contracts here, or ownership put some kind of limits on the offers.

The version I remember was Nelson refused Lou’s offer, was going UFA. What Lou’s offer was? Too short in money or years, who knows?
The Palmieri deal? In last years market, should have 100% been moved. Rumor is/was a handshake deal in Lou’s drawer, let’s see how that pans out
Bottom line, I never saw anything about ownership getting involved in hockey decisions, specifically at the deadline
I could be completely wrong about any and all of the above, just going from memory at the time

Some hard to tell stuff with Nelson. If able to sign Nelson to a team friendly deal, it would have given the opportunity to move on from Pags or Palms and this could have been the initial thought...certainly sounds possible. But, without Nelson, you need the center (Pags) and you need the goals (Palms).

Keeping Nelson and getting rid of Pags & Palms (or either) would have been the direction i would have gone for first so i do not disagree with Lou's approach if this was the thinking.

Why does Darche suck ass? You mean as a player?
I just meant if he sucks ass as a GM in the end, at least he was new and exciting.

He was a phenomenal double athlete who earned a degree and was part of the inaugural Columbus squad.

Or....

Nelson was finally on the cusp of unrestricted free agency, really wants to play in Minnesota, and will sign there in about 6 weeks.

I mean to flip it...If Darche was around the Lightning the past 15 years you don't think he/they would've drafted/groomed/developed Stamkos, Hedman, Kucherov, Vasilievskiy, Point, Killorn, Gourde, and everyone else that led to 2 Stanley Cups?
I don't know and neither does anyone else but let's hope it happens here.

Darche has a lot to prove, but Tampa is pretty much the best run franchise and I'm super happy that my new GM was sought out by them and he had the experience of working there.
Primarily brought in to manage the cap and contracts in Tampa. We could use some of that but as I stated, hopefully he is given the supporting cast he'll need. I don't think I want Roy being the decision maker on personnel moves.

Some big personalities and egos to deal with here.

You're right that the was nothing about ownership getting involved in hockey decisions, and Malkin is supposed to be pretty hands off. I typically feel like owners let GMs be GM. However, I do think owners get involved to some extent when it comes to some contract negotiations/UFA signings. I mean, it's their money. And, especially in a case like this where ownership probably pretty much knew at the TDL that Lou was on his way out - were they going to let him offer Nelson 5 x $7.5M or whatever it may have taken to sign him?

Maybe, but the only report I recall seeing was about a 3 year offer to Nelson which he supposedly turned down. Not sure if that's accurate, but if so, that's a much lower offer than it appeared Nelson would get this summer. As for MIN, we'll see.

I really enjoy how candid he is.

He's not a stuck-up like Dubas either, he worked for an international customs and logistics company where he travelled internationally and oversaw 40+ employees.

Interesting thing I just learned about Darche. He spent the entire 2004 season on the Hershey Bears in the AHL. He had a teammate for that entire season that is none other than former islander and current pro development coach Johnny Boychuck!! Wonder if Johnny finds a place on his staff? He’s already involved with the organization.

In 2006 Darche spent the season with the Worcester Sharks of the AHL where he was teammates with Thomas Greiss.

In 2009-2010 he was teammates with Halak

Rumor has it Darche would like to bring Guy Boucher into the fold. Boucher has one year remaining on his contract as Head Coach with Avangars Omsk of the KHL.
would be interesting to see if Darche asks Boucher to coach the AHL Isles . I'd imagine Guy might prefer living in north america vs russsia.
