If I was the Habs, and Michkov was there at 5, I would pick him just to hold his rights. If it's true that he wants to "choose" his team, and the Habs are not one of his choices, I would do the same as the Nords did with Lindros. You keep him until one of his "teams" pay the price to obtain him.

The Habs won't be contending any time soon, while Michkov plays out his KHL contract. They can afford to wait.

Habs are in an envious spot. They can take him after a satisfactory interview (if they can get one! :help:) or they can hang the pick and profit and maybe find that centre or goalie they want.

Teams are scared to stick and pick Michkov, unless it's a team from way back, teams in the top 10 aren't paying to take the Michkov risk.

For all the talk about NHL teams being stymied in their efforts to talk to Russian prospect Matvei Michkov, I do know multiple clubs have scheduled interviews with him in Nashville next week, prior to the draft on Wednesday June 28. Suffice to say they are looking forward to getting to know him a little better. No elite NHL draft prospect has had less live viewings/interactions with NHL GMs/executives/head scouts in his draft year than Michkov.

The talking point around his point production coming against bad teams is a little silly. All great players rack up points against bad competition. That’s what you want from them!

I guess that depends what you view the top players in this draft vs what overpayment do you think teams are going to toss your way. If you view somebody at 5th more important to building the team with vs trading Michkov years down the road, I think you have to just take somebody else.

Why would Michkov not want to play in Montreal? Other than during the Bergevin era I'd say Montreal was a great place for Russians. It's certainly more European than most, if not all, other NHL destinations as well. Seems like he is not the type to be turned off by being on a big stage.

I bet he'd love to be picked there, and as someone with no love for the Habs I'd be disappointed lol.

So if Michkov is a top 5 talent but he plans to refuse to sign with your team after being drafted, Does your GM refuse to draft him knowing his job may be on the line or does he draft him anyway with the knowledge he is the best prospect and that the GM may not be there anyway when the snow hits the fan?

Historical GMs try to preserve their own jobs.

Of course even the team that he wants to go to in 2023 may end up with a player that darts back to KHL in the future if things don't go well.

Risky pick..

What does this even mean? What scenario are you even talking about?

A Shipachev-type of scenario? The kind of scenario where Michkov is not good enough to make the team out of camp?

If he can't make the team out of camp at 21 (which is his age in 2026) then the KHL is the least of your worries.

The only way the KHL even figures in with Michkov is if he dramatically underachieves as a player. Unless of course the KHL starts attracting the best talent in the world all of a sudden, which simply won't happen.

So what's the risk? What's the unique risk?

What if Michkov says he will extend in the KHL past 2026 to any team he doesn't want to be drafted by?
Then that team will still hold his rights. Kaprizov didn't come over till his 6th year post draft.

I would think that Michkov would be a different case than Kap, being a top 5(and probably top 2 talent) pick rather than a 5th rounder, though. I would think that he would have a severe case of FOMO if he stayed past his present contract, both competitively, and financially.

If i were a team picking Michkov I would want to know that there were clear lines of communication between them and Michkov/his reps from the get go, but it is a tricky thing to finesse that not all teams are equipped for. Michkov is being paid by his KHL team, who has every right to feel that NHL teams should not tamper with their player(s), at least officially.

Further complicating things pre draft is that Michkov is still mourning the premature passing of his father. I wouldn't blame him for not being in the mood for back slapping, probing questions, and all the things that come with team interviews.

His season was disappointing
No. It wasn't. When Ovechkin was his age he hadn't even played for the Russian senior national team.
It is also funny how you go with"you don't know anything about hockey " and right after that come up with a gem of "all goalies in KHL are professional like in NHL"
This guy is a Chinese goalie, the only reason he was in KHL is that he played for chinese team in the last meaningless game of the season.
Chinese goalies can't be professional hockey players?

With the rumors of Gavrikov and Barbishev being pursed by Vancouver and the other clients on the roster I could see them trying to get drafted by Vancouver. It seems like Milstein and Canucks management have some sort of pact and tight bond of you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours.

I’m interested to see how this unfolds.

First, what we are talking about here? Draft season? If so, then you are factually wrong, Ovechkin did play for NT in his draft season, for Viktor Tikhonov (yes, that legendary soviet coach) of all people if my memory is right. He did quite good with 8 pts in 14 games of EHT and WC.

But that's just part of the truth. National Team of 2023 and 2004 is very different. Russia is banned from international competition and plays Belarus now instead of usual EHT opponents like Sweden, Czechia and Finland.
Another thing is that it is de facto owned by Roman Rotenberg, who is the son of one of the most powerful men in Russia, a friend of the president of the country. Roman Rotenberg
basically played SKA players and affiliated SKA assets, when some very random guys were on the team.

Finally, I think that in general the attitude towards young players has changed in the last 20 years, when Ovechkin played at 18 average age of that team was 27 yo, while this year it was 24,5(I mean it was supposed to be U25 team)

And if we are talking about his D-1 season my argument had nothing to do with it

Regarding chinese goalie, question is, are we interested in truth or in some weird casuistical play? In theory yes, chinese goalie can be a pro, in theory a goalie from Burundi can be in NHL. Maybe Wayne Glensky will do it.
But here's is the reality: China is not a hockey country. I don't remember any born, raised and trained chinese player making impact in any serious league. Before 2022 Olympics China put an effort to avoid humiliation in hockey tournament from the likes of Canada and Sweden and created project Kunlun, where they played mostly North American guys. They gave them passports even to the ones with no ethnic connection. They also started, in a very very limited roles, playing some domestic guys, who normally would've never played at that level.
So yes, in theory it is possible, in reality, it's not realistic
