Thanks for the updates guys. The reports about his skating are a bummer but not unexpected.

Samuellson will play in the NHL and he has a skill set that makes him extremely versatile as he can play on any of the 4 lines. His ability to improve his skating will be the deciding factor on whether he can be the heir apparent to Shane Doan on the right side (Coyotes are adament that he will be a winger) and be a full time top 6 player. His hands and playmaking ability are definitely top 6. He also plays effectively in any situation. He is an extremely heavy player in terms of being hard to play against and not to mention extremely dirty. He will be the type of player that every team is going to circle on the lineup card as a player they despise. Undisciplined at times but he's a tantalizing package of size and skill. If he can increase his foot speed to even average NHL speed he could be a dominant player in the NHL. His effectiveness in 3 consecutive WHL playoff years just screams big game player. He's put together a great resume since his draft year. Coyote fans are excited for a reason.

Other thing is that he has been playing Center and really excelling with that.

That's good to hear. Most of us are expecting he'll replace Doan as our franchise power forward, but if he can excel at center he'd be perfect to slot between Dauphin (who may end up having to shift to wing in the NHL due to his size) and Boedker on our 2nd line.

Might want to adjust that expectation...

I think our expectations are well-tempered, thanks. ;-) Perrsonally, I think Hank has 25G/50-60 point upside. He probably won't have Doaner's near PPG-peak output, but it's certainly not out of the question that Samuelsson matches Doan's 0.66 PPG career production while also emulating his heavy, at times nasty physical game.

If Samuelsson = Doan is a "tempered" expectation, then I assume you consider Samuelsson one of the top 10 prospects in the entire world?

I don't see how expecting Samuelsson to become a 0.6-0.7 PPG power forward over his career generates that conclusion. That's a non sequitur if there ever was one.

Sounds like you're overrating Shane Doan as much as he's overrating Samuelsson (which I think he is a bit). The heart of what he said doesn't imply they're hoping he's as good or better than Doan.

His defensive game and playmaking ability are underrated. Guy is a very good checker for a kid who scores at such a high clip in juniors. Also, watch his vision and ability to get the puck to the guy in position. He's on the big stage and I hope people key in on him. Also, all of the talk about his lack of mobility is way, way overblown. He gets around fine and his stride is fine.

I'm not saying he'll be an All-Star or anything. I don't think he will. But I could see him playing in the NHL as a top six forward who gets both PP and PK mins, while being a consistent 17-23g and 27-33a threat, who is a wicked pain in the ass agitator who's absolutely HATED by opposing fans.

I agree with everything except I think he will be closer to the 17-27 scoring clip. Nothing he does offensively really stands out for me, but he is great at getting chippy goals. More of a 40 point guy IMO.

I could see that. Sort of like the exact cross between Steve Ott and Shane Doan. Ott is a .38ppg on his career and Doan is .66ppt. The dead center on that is .52ppg which is 43pts over 82gp. Pretty darn close to that 17g 27a 44pts number.

Samuelsson scored a softie today, but a goal's a goal. After intercepting an outlet pass, he threw a sharp-angle backhand shot on net:

[NHL]618952[/NHL]

Needs to be moving his feet more today. Standing still and gliding waiting for pucks, will need to be more engaged in the game as a pro and play with more energy and pace. His offensive talent is of such a calibre at this level he tends to want to wait for pucks to squirt out so he can play with it.

Yes. Way too much gliding. He loses most puck races. His technique might be alright but his urgency isn't there. Also slow or disinterested on the back check.

wanted to bring this thread back... any chance he cracks the yotes next season? seems like he has been forgotten about with all this hype of the youth in Arizona.

Just going by stats, it looks like he hasn't done much in the AHL yet. I realize he had a bad injury, but I was hoping for a better pro career so far. Looks like he had a pretty good rookie year but now I hear nothing about him.

I loved him in junior but his weakness was always his skating and I always questioned if he could make the nHL. Has it improved at all? or is that the main weakness that will keep him away from NHL

Just looking for an updated scouting report on him from fans that have seen him play this season

He had a great finish to previous season. Was poised to crack roster as early as this year and then had a horrific ankle injury. Season was a write off but he could be in the mix for a roster spot in NHL this year

Have never been high on him.. was good in junior but struggled terribly with his skating. Does not have the speed to be a successful NHLer

I'm assuming that's why he's scoreless in the AHL so far? What do Yotes fans hope/expect out of him at this point?

I would judge his future on the last 40 games this year. Not the first 40 this year. He's fallen down the depth chart but is an asset that will likely be moved prior to deadline due to expansion draft eligibility. He projects as a Rw. Not as a C.
