I think I heard someone at the WJC compare him to Chris Kunitz? I'd be pretty happy with that.

Honestly, that's a pretty bad comparison IMO, at least stylistically. Kunitz has feet for hands and is the opposite of a patient high IQ playmaker.

Speers is an extremely bright player. A decent stylistic comparison could be Patrik Elias. Just a real nifty, intelligent, skilled competitor.

Speers is playing really well. He has 2 points in 6 of his last 8 games. Hasn't gone more than a game without a point all year.

Update?

What do you guys project him as at the NHL level? 2nd line 40 point center?

What happened here? How does someone go from making the NHL at 19 to being a bad AHL player? Was he rushed to the NHL? Does he even have the talent to try to make it back to the NHL?

NJ's system didn't develop well in the AHL. Teaching the AHL players to play the Devils system stunted almost everyone's growth.

Devils used to crank out NHL players; then again, they taught them the NHL standard, then they learned the system up in Jersey.
