What kind of impact is he going to have in Carolina?! The kind of upside he brings to the table? I've read a ton, watched him live, games etc.. just love to hear the opinions of others as well.

it's a great question the way you've phrased it imo. I think he's a reasonable bet for 50+ points right out of the gate because all the tools are there, and he has the physical stature to weather an 82 game grind.

but what impact is he going to have on the team? it's up for debate, and very much affected by the makeup of his line and the manner of ice time he's going to get. I wonder if he doesn't end up on a line with Necas centering he and Micheal Ferland, given how Canes brass has described Ferland's role, and Svech/Necas being consciously paired together at rookie camp to see how things gel. in that scenario his impact on the team is also dependent on the performance of another (highly touted) rookie, and a player coming into a new situation half a continent away from his comfort zone.

Having seen him in a week of rookie camp and two games of Traverse City, his performance level has been uneven, and there’s a lot of speculation that he’s been told to take it easy during these offseason rituals. When he’s “on” and dialed in, he looks visibly different than when he’s kind of holding back.

That being said, he came as advertised. Phenomenal puck skills, very good skater, unnaturally calm and poised in traffic, likes to initiate contact, seems like a really good kid with a strong personal character. Speaks English well for someone who didn’t grow up with it.

Just updating, Svechnikov has looked much more intense during preseason play; it's pretty clear now that he was indeed throttling it back during earlier showings. After 2 games (6-1 and 5-1 wins) he has 1-2-3 with 1 SOG, 0 PIM, 1 hit, 2 takeaways in about 28 minutes of TOI. Very strong on the puck, making more mistakes against the tougher opposition but his recovery is absolutely outstanding. The biggest thing people remark upon is his precision passing ability, which is absolutely sublime and effortless. He's been playing the PP but not the PK. He has spent a fair amount of time with Sebastian Aho, after being separated from Necas once we got to a point where multiple rookies on a line stopped being a serious option. Widely regarded (per Vegas odds, for example) as the #3 Calder candidate to start the season, behind Pettersen and Dahlin.

This is the thing that caught me be surprise. Not just that his passes have been precise, but he makes the reads and passes so quickly and without hesitation. Puck is barely on his stick before he finds the open guy and puts it on his tape. I expected him to be able to score, to be strong on the puck, etc..., but this surprised me.

Huh? Because the worst record in the league isn't guaranteed the 1st OA pick because of the lottery (thus my comment that he may be happy there is a lottery next year). Even if Ottawa ends up with the worst record in the NHL, there's only an 18.5% chance that their pick would be 1st OA and and 81.5% chance that it won't be 1st OA. If they finish dead last (and that's not a given), then their pick could be anywhere from 1st OA to 4th OA.

Really excited to watch this kid. Sucks that he's in the same division but on the bright side I guess it's just an opportunity to see a star talent a little bit more than I normally would.

Definitely a nice core being built in Carolina. If they can get that goaltending position taken care of they'll be tough to deal with.
