I think this whole "bolt to Russia/KHL" narrative is for the most part fiction and goofy. sure if you have a guy who's a boarder-line NHLer or destined to play in the AHL his entire career he may/probably will go home, and I don't blame him. little to no chance with a player like Loktionov. how many guys have actually "bolted" to the KHL? very, very few is my guess.

I think most of us are eagerly awaiting the chance to see Loktionov in action. I hope he gets plenty of ice time to audition. I'd also like to se him get some minutes with some skilled players like Skinner or Lindholm, and not just Dvorak/Dwyer.

Yes I agree. Hope he is given the opportunity these next 20 games to show what he has.

Why does everyone think he is going to the KHL for? I have never read anything about that.....please enlighten me.

^ oh you know, the same old narrative about the Russian guy is in circulation. apparently this "one" speaks English well and JR has no concerns about him "bolting", according to Chip. but he had to ask.

I don't know if I'm reading too much into it, but comments like this from JR tick me off:

“We think he has a high skill level and he can play on the power play,†Rutherford said. “We have to wait and see where he fits in best. When he was in Los Angeles he played well. When he was with New Jersey and playing with (Ilya) Kovalchuk, he played well. This year his ice time was cut back. We don’t know the reason why but he’s certainly a very capable player.â€

I'm sorry, but if you're trading for a player that seems to have fallen out of favor, shouldn't the reason why be near the top of the list of things to figure out? Was his icetime cut because of his own play or has his play been fine, but someone else's has been better? Seems kind of important to know.

But.. But he scored his first NHL goal against the Hurricanes so he's got to be good, right? :sarcasm:

Yeah I saw that yesterdayish and I rolled my eyes.

Also, from JR's press conference today, he called Gerber, "Gerbe".

Where'd Chip hear that? From reading the thread in the Devils board, he apparently can't speak English at all.

Decide for yourself:

Maybe you should do the research and get back to us.

2 years ago NHL Trade deadline.

Aside from Paul Gaustad going for a first, there's not much out there. Could Gleason and Ruutu have returned more? Maybe, but I feel like JR would have pulled the trigger if a first was on the table. So let's say the max return was similar to what Kostitsyn/Oduya returned: a 2nd and a 3rd/5th (all in 2013). Let's say that's what they got for Ruutu and Gleason.

Now let's flash forward to last years draft. Let's say the order is unchanged, and it plays out the same way. JR calls up Yzerman at 3 and offers a #5 and three 2nds for #3. The Canes obviously take Jones, Nashville takes Drouin, and Tampa settles for Lindholm.

Which is would you rather have?

Elias Lindholm, Andrej Sekera, John-Michael Liles, Andrei Loktionov, 3rd 2017
vs.
Seth Jones, Jamie McBain

I'm not sure I pick the bottom every time, as good as Jones is.

Beyond how stupid that is, why put two centers on the same line?

Because the Canes have Staal, Staal, Lindholm, Malhotra, Nash and now Loktionov who are all centers? A couple of them are going to have to be on a line with another center.

I'm not going to freak out because a guy who just got here is plugged into the 4th line in his first game. If he stays there for a prolonged period, then maybe I'll question it a bit, but his very first game? No.

I know, what I meant was why would he not be slotted above Nash and Malhotra? I mean, assuming Elias stays on the 2nd line RW.

We needed a 3C so we traded for one, then immediately put him as a fourth line winger?
