why does kirkunov think he can change the roster and remove non-injured players?
why does he love kharitonov so much?
why is morozov not on this team?
what are morozov's chances of being added?
what are the odds of zhamnov or kharitonov being removed?
please help me.
1. Bure thinks so as well. *I* believe this is largely because they resubmit the rosters for the actual Olympics again in January or Febuary sometime. This is just deadline imposed by the NHL in accordance to the IIHF.
2. Kharitonov proved himself at the World Championships and Rosno Cup tournament. He plays for Dynamo, on the same line as Maxim Sushinsky: Russia's best right winger. Although Kharitonov has not good put up good numbers this year, or overly impressive numbers any year, he has showed enough chemistry with Sushinsky to make the team. He is a very good passer, and somewhat of a defensive penalty kill specialist as well... something this Russia team is lacking. Yet I think the deciding factor is that Kirkunov, apart being coach of the national team is also coach of Kharitonov+Sushinsky's Dynamo and wants his boys at the Olympics.
3. Lets take a look at right wing on the Russian squad as Morozov is a right winger. There are many people that believe that Morozov deserved to be on the team ahead of Afinogenov. Yet others will argue that although Afinogenov is not proficient in the NHL, he has experience playing with Ovechkin+Malkin and has been the hero at both the Olympics and World Championships. Although Morozov lead the league in scoring last year with all the NHL players and is leading the league in scoring at the present moment: most people would agree Sushinsky is better. Viktor Kozlov is a different type of player from Morozov and will play defence. Then again, some people believe Korolyuk (another right winger who didn't make it) belonged on the team ahead of Morozov. In any case, it came down to the addition of Bykov and Russia deciding to bring 8 defencemen and only 12 forwards. If Russia selected the customary 13 forwards, Morozov would have made the team as he was the last guy out of a spot.
4.. Morozov's chances of being added prior to the tournament are decent but overshadowed by Sokolov or Brylin's chances of being added... which are VERY good. If a defenceman underperforms though: Morozov is the most likely guy to be included. Chances are Morozov makes the 3 man taxi squad, and that a winger gets injured during the tournament and he gets at least some playing time.
5. If Kharitonov gets injured or starts performing horribly: he is gone. Yet overall he is most likely going to stick since Russia told Samsonov to say he wasn't going or lost Samsonov due to declination. In either case, with no Samsonov in the picture on the reserve list, Kharitonov's chances of staying on the team improve dramatically. Korolyuk is the only guy that remains on the list that can play either left wing or right wing... but given his negative comments to the press after he wasn't selected: I think he lowered his chances of replacing Kharitonov quite a bit. Krikunov said it loud in clear for the other case: if Zhamnov does not improve his game: he is out of there!! Krikunov has never seen Zhamnov play. The only reason Zhamnov is on the roster is because he is good friends with Bure who expects him to pick up the slack. However if he continues at his current pace with 1 goal all season, he will get cut. This is likely since Zhamnov hasnt looked impressive at all. His likely replacements are either Brylin: who Krikunov openly opposes since he thinks he is just a regular unimpressive 3rd liner or for experience with playing with Kharitonov+Sushinsky: Taratukhin. Nobody expected this guy to get consideration and Bure probably opposes him, but Krikunov is a little weird and likes RSL players. Most fans would have mentioned or picked Zvinovjev but he has gotten in trouble with the national team before and most likely isnt selected because he would fail the drug test and get the team stripped of their medals if they should win.
6. Consider yourself helped.
