Russian factor vs NCAA factor

Russian prospects that playing in Russia usually overlooked because of nasty Russian factor. But there are a lot of cases when teams lose their prospects because they refuse to sign ELCs after their NCAA careers are over and choose FA way. So what factor is worse for NHL teams?

When was the last time a Russian Prospect refused to come over or failed to come over due to contract issues?. The factor is overblown to me. At most they are held back a few years which can be great for their development anyway.

That said, when looking at the very top of the draft the NCAA factor really isn't anywhere near as much of an issue as no NCAA players would stay to graduate and force their way to being a free agent when they can be in the NHL immediately. Significant lost earnings there. NCAA factor is an issue with later bloomers mostly taken in later rounds of the draft.

And the NCAA players who become UFA get more attention because their draft rights expire mid-August when not much else is going on hockey-news wise. If Chase Priskie became UFA on July 1st with all the other actual NHLers, not a drop of ink would've been spilled talking about him.

12. Finally some clarity on Isaac Howard: he is planning a return to Michigan State. Tampa Bay’s 2022 first-rounder can be an unrestricted free agent if unsigned by Aug. 15, 2026. I admit to being a little bit surprised, as the Lightning were promoting his Hobey Baker candidacy (Howard is a finalist). But word in NCAA circles is the team and Howard weren’t simpatico on where everything stood at this time. We will see how things proceed from here, especially if other teams are interested.

The only real Russian factor is that fringe players like 11/12/13/14 forwards or 6/7 defensemen will often go back to the khl than hang around waiver wires and such just to maybe get a spot after their ELC.

He is turning down $270k in SB’s before he gets to free agency to choose his team and get his first

I mean that is a chunk of change

The only change if a prospect refuses a contract from a team is he isn’t allowed to get schedule A’s with new team or the ELC is on the lower spectrum of AAV. That is fair in my opinion

They are very different factors.

Russian factor hampers high end players getting drafted in the first 2 rounds. They drop because teams don't want to wait 4 to 6 years for that big if asset. Kaprizov didn't drop to the 5th round because of a Russian factor, it's because he played in Siberia and didn't get enough eyes on him. There is also the fact the KHL players are less likely to be willing to ride the bus in the AHL when a KHL salary is sitting there. There are probably another dozen(or couple dozen) Russians that could be NHLers but aren't willing to do the AHL time.

The NCAA factor impacts lower round picks for the most part, that took longer to develop and are closing on the expiration of their rights and are near NHL ready. Given at that age ELCs often go from 3 to 2 years, or even 2 to 1 years. Just not a ton of incentive to sign. It just doesn't happen with top 2 round picks.

Given the difference, the asset price of the Russian factor to me is worse
