No it doesn’t. The total amount is the same and I believe there is an adjustment based on CPI at the deferral amount to account for the time value of money. It doesn’t make sense for Drai as he’s likely going back to Germany where they have a higher tax rate- but it doesn’t make sense for Connor since he will stay in Canada. If Connor moves back to Ontario- they have a higher tax rate than Alberta- so it wouldn’t work then.

Even accounting for tax, the player probably doesn't come out ahead by deferring everything. You're losing so much by not having that money in investments immediately.

I think there's a lot of misunderstanding going around on these deferrals, fans should not expect players to take these contracts. It only works in very unique scenarios, and I'm not convinced it's providing that much in cap savings anyway, since the cap hit is adjusted.

You could argue he has been in the past. Sure as f*** isn't this year, though.

I'm hoping that this isn't McDavid's "new normal". He's still a top 10 player, but it's so far removed from his peak that I'm scared his regression has started 3 years earlier than I would have anticipated.

Part of me thinks that his performance this year is due to a lack of motivation, and he'll turn it back on in the playoffs, because he goes huge swathes of time in which he seems completely disinterested, lacks intensity and seems to not put in any second effort.

I dunno, man but I wouldn't want to be paying THIS version of McDavid 20 million dollars a year two seasons from now. The McDavid of 2 to 3 years ago would have been underpaid at 20 million dollars for sake of comparison.

2 years for Bouchard at 8M would be ideal. In 2027-28 the cap is likely 110M+, we can afford to give him the 11M and 8 years will take him to 35. So essentially all his prime years

He'll move Winnipeg to the USA after 2 years of losing money. Meanwhile, Arizona got to leech off Canadian teams for like 20 years.

For sure, he could withstand losses for a longer time, but rich people don’t like to bleed money for too long. It’s contra to their long term goal.

All teams will have to ensure they have revenue streams to keep the treasury reasonably full to compete on salaries. Canadian teams are doubly disadvantaged because labour costs are in USD and the exchange isn’t in their favour right now. Winnipeg and Ottawa both suffer from the fact that they have small corporate bases from which to pull high dollar sponsorships, sizeable season ticket buys from.

Like baseball, I think you will see increasing stratification in franchise groups, with high medium and low dollar spenders. What will become interesting is whether low spenders will be able to sustain themselves with their fan bases over the long term. It brings me back to the Cal Nichols led EIG. Edmonton was a low spender and we all know it eventually became unsustainable. Fewer owners were willing to make the cash calls. Thankfully Gary stepped up with the stabilization fund and new ownership was found and then he helped broker a deal for the arena that is a pipeline for revenue. These will become challenging times for a few teams, north and south of the border.
