Rumor: Rumors & Proposals Thread | With Klingberg in the Mix Who Are Our 7D After the Deadline?

They do have 3 games in hand on the Bruins and they're 5 points back, they have the same number of games as the Bolts who are in the 2nd wild card, for whatever that's worth.

Either way, you're right, the East will 'mid' itself down to the wire lol.

Adding the Pens further into sellers, they've played 53 games and the Bolts have 4 games in hand.

Yep I think the Pens are firmly eliminated along with the Sabres, but that's it. The rest of the teams have at least some reasonable hope.

It's at the point where we're going to be buyers AND sellers at the deadline lol.

There are a few pieces that probably aren't making it into the lineup that someone would want.
How can you say the Oilers are buyers when they've been signing and picking up players on waivers lol

Vejmelka and Gibson aren’t definitively better than Skinner, none of them are consistent and in the 2 seasons previous to this one, Skinner has better numbers than either of them. Demko might be available but doubt Canucks would trade him in division. Before this year without question he’s definitively better then Skinner but his injuries seemed to have derailed him a bit and he’s been pretty atrocious so far this year.

Gibsons contract just makes him a terrible risk, you’re chewing up precious assets and cap betting on 20 games from a guy who’s been steadily declining for 5 years.

Vejmelka I actually like and could get behind as a tandem goalie with Skinner but I don’t think Utah is selling their #1 goalie when they’re still in the hunt. At some point you have to turn the page on selling off every year and send the message that we’re trying to be competitive to the very end. Trading their starter sends the message to their players that they’re packing it in.
Skinner would drown playing for Utah and Anaheim. His stats is average and he's playing behind one of the best defensive teams in the Oilers. He's lucky he came into the league and only played for a good team. I know it costs assets but if Klingberg and Saad works out, we really only need to spend assets on an upgrade on Pickard.

I can see Vejmelka being available as Utah can acquire a starting goalie thru a trade once they're ready to contend for the playoffs.

Skinner would be out of the league if he played on Anaheim, his numbers would tank.

His .902 save percentage here is honestly heavily inflated by being on a top chance suppression and defensive structured teams.

He would be well below .890 if he had to play in Anaheim.

We're maybe one of the 4 teams in the league where Skinner can be a starter, basically because we don't give a shit about goaltending and his only competition is an AHL goalie (Pickard). I think Pittsburgh, Philly, maybe Columbus, and maaaaaybe Buffalo are the only other teams where Skinner might be a starter, the other 27 teams, nope.

Pretty sure if Saad signs here it will come with some guarantee of a chance to play with McDavid or Draisaitl, which wouldn't be that hard to accommodate as basically no one has worked out great on Leon's wing this year (production wise).

Doubt it. We haven’t guaranteed anyone a spot in the lineup in years.

Any interest in a Big Rig reunion?

Not if we’re bringing in Saad. We’re already going to be scratching at least one of Skinner/Kapanen/Perry/etc. The only forward we should consider trading for imo would be a shutdown, right shot center who’s an upgrade on Ryan/Philp

The Ryan/Philp upgrade might end up being Henrique if we sign Saad.

Kapanen even got time with Draisaitl and McDavid when he first got here, Saad will be the same. Saying "you'll get a chance there" isn't the same as "you have a guarunteed spot there for the rest of the year".

It's not like anyone is playing that hot with Draisaitl 5 on 5 anyone that it would be terribly hard to move someone off that line. I like Podz, but he isn't scoring a ton and Arvidsson is performing like a 4 million version of Yamamoto. Jeff Skinner is in Knoblaugh's dog house. Who even knows what Kane is after all the surgeries.

We have like 50 forwards but no one has taken the ball and properly really secured a top 6 forward slot.

Janmark-Henrique-Brown would easily be the best "fourth" line in the league if that happened. Heavy own zone starts at ES and all the PK minutes those three + RNH can handle. Giving Nuge and Skinner softer deployments might also unlock a third scoring line we could really use.

Skinner-RNH-Perry/Kapanen on the 3rd line might work. Let RNH hang out back and let Skinner and Perry/Kapanen drive the offense

Saad is possibly an upgrade on the worst forward currently getting ice (whether you think that's Philp, Brown, Janmark, Kapanen, it doesn't matter). Therefore, if he comes at low low number, it's an absolute no brainer to add him to the roster.

This is the same argument I have with people who don't want to knock Emberson out of the lineup by acquiring a defenceman (in the scenario where Klingberg clicks immediately with Nurse). I love Emberson, I think he has a great future here and was a great acquisition. But in an all-in year like this, you use every bit of cap space available to make the team as deep and good as possible. If that means acquiring another top four defenceman at the deadline when you don't necessarily need it, you do it anyway if you think it could tip the scales even just a little bit.
Emberson needs to hit a certain number of games played to remain an RFA.

I don't like Arvidsson with Draisaitl at all. He is playing better, but he just doesn't fit. He's trying too hard to make cute east/west plays and isn't playing to his strength driving north/south and is falling down a lot. I think he would be much more effective in a simplified energy role on the 3rd line, which also helps the third line because I think it generally lacks speed.

Saad, on paper, is the ideal type of player for Leon to play with. Big, can pick up pucks off the wall, has scoring hands, and isn't going to need to have the puck a ton. Worth a look for sure.

i agree it would be kinda Saad if they signed him

Really the only situation where a bonafide starter who’s definitively better than Skinner, and might maybe be available, would be Saros. Maybe with how their season went and all the big time, Long term money they’ve handed out, they might pivot and cut bait before his new deal and nmc kick in.
Saros is a guy that would be an excellent target for a long term upgrade. I am not sure how easy it would be to get him out of Nashville in the near future. Had they not dealt Askarov I think it would have been much easier to convince them to trade Saros.

Now if Nashville is convinced that they need to go full rebuild maybe you could get him. I still think the off season would be the more likely time to make such a deal. This trade deadline I suspect making it work would be hard given that they do not seem to want to move on from Skinner. But if he faulters in the playoffs I think that changes quickly.
