Rumor: Rumors & Proposals Thread | With Klingberg in the Mix Who Are Our 7D After the Deadline?

Knob is going to do Jeff Skinner worse than the Warden in the Shawshank Redemption did to Andy Dufrense, lol.

The kinda sad part of it is Skinner actually has been making a real effort to comply, +3 in his last 8 games with 2 goals (20 goal pace) and 4 points overall playing basically with nothing but bottom 6 minutes, never a sniff of time with McDavid or Draisaitl.
Can skinner do everyone’s taxes?

If J Skinner would agree to terminate his contract leaving him to sign with another contender for league minimum and we signed Saad to league minimum, it would least help with our cap. Still not convinced that Saad is the answer. But it would least make sense from a cap perspective and who knows, maybe Saad has something. Dunno if JSkinner would agree.

But if we just end of waiving guys or assigning Philp to the AHL, I don’t really get the point. Just kicking the can down the road for another day.

I think we can make them both fit for now if we had to:

Saad-McDavid-Hyman
Podkolzin-Drai-RV
Skinner-RNH-Perry/Kap
Janmark-Henrique-Brown
Kap/Perry, Philp

Does it get even worse when Kane is healthy? Yup, so Skinner leaving is probably inevitable. But if we can ride that lineup until the deadline it’s a lot of firepower.

I mean, I could see it, but I wonder why he wouldn't sign somewhere where he'd get guaranteed top 6 time. He already has two Cup rings, so that can't be a huge motivation. Skinner must be moving
That seems to be his main motivation. He just left a truckload of money on the table to be free to go to a contender.

Typical oilers if they add Saad. Ignoring the real issues and biggestweakness(goaltending) while creating another issues with to mamy forwards upfront. Like some of said what's gonna happen when Kane comes back? Healthy Kane is an absolute must in the playoffs

I agree with goaltending being the biggest issue, but we all know they're not going to address that. Might as well load up the team in other area

The money he left on the table is equivalent to McDavid's house, possibly more. That is a lot of money but if he plays his cards right and he's only 32, they can still make 10M+ before he retires and also chase the cup

Maybe Kane isn't coming back and when he does he might very well be a shell of his former self and what's wrong with adding a free asset with upside to be a contributing player at league minimum? How is adding a guy for cheap ignoring other needs? Some of you complain about the oddest things.

Everyone wants to improve our D because it is weak. Everyone wants to improve our goalies because they are weak. All that be said we are 7th overall defensively after another slow start to the season. It is Saad that fellow Oilers fans don't see we have a good team. Skinner waived to the AHL and Saad at 1 million. Brings us more grit and he is still on pace for 16 goals.

Can't do that. Remember the NMC.

I don't know why people are saying we don't need anymore LWs. The 1LW is still one of our biggest needs. No one really plays well there aside from Drai and we can't have him there full time. RNH is an offensive blackhole let's be honest. Saad plays well with elite players in the past and he might fit in there like Benoit Pouliot.

Benoit Pouliot was no Ty Rattie

Nuge plays better by himself actually. He can drive play when he needs to.

Sigh, Saad wouldn’t be a barrier to upgrading elsewhere.

This is complaining for the sake of complaining at this point.

I wonder if Skinner agrees to mutually terminate his contract with the Oilers. He has made double the money Saad made over his career lol

He might. What’s his next contract going to look like riding the pine here? If another playoff team has interest it could happen.

He’s closing in on 100 million in career earnings and has never played a playoff game. I doubt he cares about his next contract in the slightest.

They have gone all in before and likely will this year. They traded for Ekholm, traded for Henrique. They aren't anywhere close to done this year lol. Two solid gambles on vets who have proven it in the past on dirt cheap deals costing zero assets is smart asset management.

Yep. If they both pan out, you’ve basically avoided having to pay like a 1st and 2 2nds and that’s huge for a team that’s low on assets. We still have capspace so we won’t be done regardless.

I don’t get the issue. Can’t we just waive Kapanen?

Nuge - McDavid - Hyman
Podkolzin - Draisaitl - Arvidsson
Saad - Henrique - Brown
Janmark - Philp - Skinner/Perry

More likely Philp goes down. If Janmark works at center you run something like

Nuge - McDavid - Hyman
Podkolzin - Draisaitl - Arvidsson
Saad - Henrique - Kapanen
Brown - Janmark - Perry
Skinner

The nice thing is they do have time to test drive Saad without making any decisions.

They aren't accruing cap because they're $79k over the cap and into LTIR, so they can just add him to the roster and run 14 forwards.

Yep. There’s no downside

BS. He’s a potential upgrade for free. You don’t ignore a free upgrade because you might have another need to address. If Saad and Klingberg work out then you can basically spend all your assets getting a goalie and you’re set

Sami'sson has played great. I'd hate to waive him.

f*** what a strange world we're living in, where everybody wants to play for the Oilers.

Part of the issue is what sort of inconsistency you get out of a guy. Campbell for example was inconsistent in the sense that he would have streaks where he was unbeatable followed by streaks where he was unplayable. Skinner is inconsistent in a different way. With Skinner you just never know when he will have one of those games where he kills the team's chances.

If you have two guys like Campbell and you can predictably ride the hot guy until he flips you might be in better shape. But if you have two Skinners every game is still a possible coin flip even if it is slightly weighted to the good.

I readily admit that I know very little about how to actually identify the right netminder for the right team in terms of style and skill. It is a position I just don't understand. But what I do know is the importance of consistency for this team. When their goalie puts up a .900 or better they are 24-3-1 this year. That is why I like the QS% stat. I'd rather have a guy put up two .910 games than a 1.000 followed by an .850.

Hellebucyk this year has a .775 QS%. With that sort of consistency the Oilers would be nearly impossible to beat. Now can he duplicate that when it counts? Similarly with Thompson in Washington. He has a .741 QS%. One thing I have like about Pickard is that he has been very even keeled this year. He is not spectacular but he has seldom not given the team a chance to win. His QS% is .706 and this is reflected in his win-loss record of 13-4-0. Of course the difference between Pickard and the other two is that his load is managed carefully and he plays mostly against low end teams. But as a backup he has done the job of giving the team a chance to win when he plays. If they had to go with Pickard for longer stretches I'd be worried. But if you need him to play one game to change the tide he has done the job.

All of this is why personally I want to see them try to get a truly better #1 than Skinner sometime in the sense of a guy who is simply more reliable game in and game out. I just don't see a lot of obvious options for that right now since those guys are not that common.
Really the only situation where a bonafide starter who’s definitively better than Skinner, and might maybe be available, would be Saros. Maybe with how their season went and all the big time, Long term money they’ve handed out, they might pivot and cut bait before his new deal and nmc kick in.

Its nice players might want to play here.

That doesn't mean you have to bring in every fringe former top 6 guy because they think they can still play. Saad is having a miserable season. Worst GA/60 of any forward on the Blues by a country mile. Only one worse than him was Kapanen before they waived. Who has come here and put up the worst GA/60 of any of our forwards by a country mile.
He's been playing primarily on the fourth line lately did you expect his numbers to be at the top
