Rumor: Rumors & Proposals Thread | With Klingberg in the Mix Who Are Our 7D After the Deadline?

When was the last time the Oilers had three 50 goals 50 assists players on the same team? The Oilers could have the chance to have all three

McDavid
Drai
Rantanen

I have no idea how they would make that happen, but these forums would burn to the ground if it did.

If Rantanen were to sign in Edmonton, the reaction would be the equivalent of HF getting hit by The Tzar Bomba. This site would crash so hard that it wouldn't be accessible to anyone for over a month.

And then he signs in Vegas and the whole point is moot.

It's not happening.
Yeah good luck to Vegas signing any stars without full NMCs moving forward.

And they don’t seem that inclined to give those clauses out since they like the flexibility of moving players out like commodities.

No thanks to a 16M per winger. Rantanen isn't worth it.
I doubt he even gets 14 million from any other team. He'll probably end up signing with someone in the 12 million range unless a team gets super desperate. Didn't he say that he was willing to sign for less than what Mackinnon was making to stay in Colorado?

The signing of McDavid, Rantanen and Bouchard this summer would look like this

No, just that he was willing to sign under market value. I presume many teams would pay 14 for him, so he was probably willing to take 13. Maybe even match Nate.

Good thing the players get paid in American dollars. I don't think a guy making 8 million a year is going to care to much that a carton of eggs went up $2.
Most don't even make that in their entire lifetime of working. I believe that most people can't even grasp, or understand how much money 8 million a year is.

If the average person makes a 100 grand a year (which they don't) they'd have to work for 80 years to make 8 million. Let that sink in lol.

Drafted players tend to be quite a bit cheaper than UFAs.
Plus you're going against other teams with deeper pockets and more desirable places to live.
Which teams have deeper pockets than the Oilers in terms of actual money to spend? There is a cap ceiling and the Oilers can easily spend to it.

There seems to be a big thaw in the hesitance of players wanting to play in Edmonton. It's also never been a big issue with Finns or Swedes.

All that said this is fun to talk about but it is highly unlikely to happen. I think it is much more likely he goes back to Colorado if he does not re-sign.

Just curious what's the last day until a player like Jonathan Toews can sign with a team and still play in the playoffs?

Not based on anything but pretty sure it would be the trade deadline. Anyone in your system by the deadline is eligible to play in the playoffs as far as I remember. If acquired following the deadline, they can still play in the regular season, but not in the playoffs (I know this applies to trades, not sure you're even allowed to sign free agents following the deadline).

LOL Rantanen to Edmonton? Too good to be true. Regardless.. sure seems like Edmonton is becoming a top destination for players now.
It absolutely is too good to be true. I'm 98% sure that Carolina is going to resign him. Why even trade for a player like Rantanen if they knew they couldn't?

"We’ve seen the Anaheim Ducks and Carolina Hurricanes utilizing contracts with deferred salaries involved for Frank Vatrano and Seth Jarvis. LeBrun said in his aforementioned article the Oilers presented a similar deal to Draisaitl last summer, but his agent wasn’t up for it. That’s fair and their right, but we’re going to say there’s been a change of tune in this world, and Rantanen’s willing to do it.
Rantanen hits free agency and wants to sign a deal worth $12.5-million per year over seven years, totalling $87,500,000 over the length of the deal. If 60 percent of that salary was deferred over seven subsequent years after his contract is up, according to PuckPedia‘s deferred salary calculator, that would help take his cap hit down to $9,918,713."

Deferred salary.... another way to get Rantanen to fit under the cap lol. Interesting that they mentioned we tried that with Drai but his camp didn't go for it.

Their owner is incredibly frugal and controlling despite their competitor status. Unless he changes his stripes, I have a hard time believing he would be interested in the degree of front loading and AAV required to compete with other teams that would just hand over a blank cheque.
