Rumor: Rumors & Proposals Thread | With Klingberg in the Mix Who Are Our 7D After the Deadline?

I'm not really getting that from what is being said, especially when Friedman point blank mentioned it is not "as likely as it might have been earlier in the season” because they don't want to anoint Gibson the starter.
It's because Gibson wants to be given the number 1 job out of the gate, not because the Oilers aren't interested. It's highly probable that Skinner dropping the ball at the start of the season(yet again) and having a decent stretch mid-season factored into the wavering commitment to a move on both sides.

My post was more about the fairly consistent narrative that Oiler's management is head in the sand oblivious to Skinner's faults despite the obviousness of the issues within his game. We're still a month away from the trade deadline, a lot can happen between now and then.

My hope is Pickard's level of play this year, which to be honestly has been very good for a NHL back up who was a career AHLer, might leave the team with more comfort in moving on from Skinner in a move for another goaltender, perhaps more than they would have previously.

Gibson
Pickard

gives me more confidence, but I haven't seen Gibson regularly behind this team yet.

I think the problem is that who would actually want Skinner? Especially if he's getting supplanted by an outside acquisition.

Pickard has been decent and makes for a solid backup option, but he also has an easily buriable contract. At least in the context of this year, who knows how things playout next year

So that's my point, the team might be comfortable enough with Pickard in the back up role with his level of play, that trading Skinner for "his replacement" might not be so out of realm of possibility for them.

Probably closer to 1st, Skinner, and Savoie. They don't need to get rid of him all that badly.

I doubt the cost would be that high. The Oilers can go elsewhere for a goalie and Anaheim knows it.

Getting a 1st + saving $3.2 million/year (almost $10 million in savings for their cheap ownership) would be a very reasonable haul for a team in their position with the goaltending market being what it is (almost no buyers).

Then they can use that saved cap in part to pay Dostal.

Where? Utah? Also our first would basically be a second, so it's not exactly a huge haul.

We did just make a Finals with our present goaltending tandem, it's not like we're in danger of not making the playoffs or something, Anaheim's bargaining position is fairly dubious. We're not exactly the 2006 Oilers teetering between an 8th and 9th seed.

You can still score very good players with a late 1st or use it in another level to get something good.

Well a lot around here are worried about us not even making it out of the first round. That would be nothing short of disastrous. The need is obvious.

Yeah, could happen. It's not like Anaheim is hurting for cap space or anything.

Would be quite the move if the Oilers went all in on Gibson/Pickard, especially considering Gibson has had some durability issues over the last few years.

Gibson set his destination to 2 places. He's not going to cost that much

Yep, that's the other thing, seems like Gibson is not apt to waive his NTC for just anywhere. It has to be to a contender that he likes so Anaheim's options are fairly limited.

If you live eat and breath Oiler talk maybe, to Anaheim we just look like the same team that just made a Cup Final a few months ago. Even our media is barely whispering anything about goaltending.

There are other options besides just Gibson too, Cam Talbot, Vejmelka, maybe going with a younger guy like Blomqvist, Annunen, etc.

If you're going for a goalie from Anaheim, go for Dostal. The Red Wings are in a playoff spot so there's no reason for them to trade Talbot. I don't even know who the other two are.

Not sure we can outcompete the Hurricanes honestly. They have a management group with a history of actually being serious about loading up(must be nice) and are more easily prepared than Edmonton to offer Gibson the prominent role.

Anyone who thinks the Oilers are going to abandon Skinner and go with Pickard as the backup has not been paying attention to how the goalies have been deployed.
