Because some are convinced ANYONE is better than that which we have. Regardless of the numbers the goalies have because their bad numbers are based solely on the fact they are playing on a bad team not that the goalie is bad

It’s to the point I think that some here truly feel the Oilers would be near undefeated, and potentially the greatest team of all time if they just had a different goalie. That effectively seems to be the expectation.

You don't get rid of one of the 2 goalies we have to bring in a career minor leaguer who's hit a hot streak. The minute Ingram gets back to being a no name, we will be screaming again.

You bring in experience and a legit proven goalie who has shown a history of good goaltending under Tough circumstances.

Varlamov or Quick, would look great behind our defensive system.

Quick is 39 years old. Varlamov will be 37 in April. If they are coming in, it's a mentor to Skinner.

The problem with having cheap goalies like Skimner is that he's going to be 33 in April. You kind of already know what he is.

Ingram on the other hand could be the the next Hill or Thompson. He's only 27and will be 28 in March. He's basically the same age as Thompson and has never had a great team in front of him.

Jeff Skinner is going to be 33 in April

Stu is younger than Hill and Thompson

Would you guys do a 1st for Gibson at 50%? Comes to 3.2M AAV and we get him for 3 cup runs.

His current numbers to me seem similar to Ingram or Vejmelka at their peak, but with the bonus of high pedigree and absolutely stellar numbers when he broke into the league. There's potential to unlock if he's reinvigorated by joining a cup contender and plays behind a top 5 defense corps in the league. He's also capable of becoming a true 1A and only 31 years old.

If Klingberg comes in and looks solid, that would allow the Oil to target just one big fish at the deadline. I could see Gibson being that big fish, especially if Skinner continues to struggle.

Though I suspect they'll go cheaper on goalie. Imo they don't need someone to usurp Skinner, rather they need someone who can platoon with him and give him a couple games off at a time.

My dream deadline is...
  • Something around Skinner (Jeff) for Frederic
  • A vet LDH brought in for depth at under 2mil (Dumoulin, Martinez, Maatta)
  • A decent 1B goalie, who shouldn't cost an arm and a leg (Looking at Talbot, Vejmalka/Ingram, Jarry @50%, etc)

The game vs the Capitals showed that even without Mcdavid we have a good team that can control the pace and play of the game. If Klingberg works out I think we really need to shift our TDL plans from defence to someone that can put the puck in the net.

We need more GOALS

This is strong evidence that we will be looking at a big increase in the salary cap over the next few years. There are strong indications of a cap at $97M next year. If that happens I would not be surprised to see the cap at $105M when McDavid's contract kicks in. If they could get Bouchard to take a shorter deal in the $8.5M range they can start to add to their roster with some significant deals.

There isn't even a magnifying glass on a piece of paper amount of smoke about obtaining a goalie...which is very alarming
Then when Skinner shits the bed for the 3rd playoffs in a row and has no one to bail him out (Pickard ain't it), I'm sure the fans and media will point the fingers at our generational superstars, Connor and Drai, for not putting up 3 points a night. And some of our stupid fans will act like putting up historic levels of points, not seen in decades, is easier than putting up a .900 in the playoffs. "Oh they couldn't score in game 7". Ya, not like those guys are the only f***ing reason it even got to game 7, in spite of their truly mediocre goaltender.

f***ing criminal that Skinner is the guy they are hitching Connor's legacy to.

Insert the Tim Robbins hotdog costume, "we're all trying to find the guy who did this" meme, regarding Oilers management and their complete lack of give a shit about their goaltending.

That's my hope to because it would just be huge for everyone, but these guys are very conservative, so I wonder if we see the smallest increases they "feel comfortable" with instead of a bullish push toward a higher cap.

If Bouchard signs for 3-5 years, he's going to walk after that. What would be his reason to re-sign? Oilers would probably be trending downwards. Most of the guys would be passed their prime or retired.

The reason to give Bouchard 8 years is it aligns with McDavid 8 years.

It does matter. You can't just list a guys stats when the teams are polar opposites. ANA allows liek the most chances per game. It's a hilarious take.

This is the only thing that matters. Do people think Gibson here playing some more games than Pickard (against tougher teams) would have given us more wins?

Do people think Gibson here over SKinner would have given us more wins?

That is up to our subpar scouts. How does he move? How many High Danger chances does he save? You have to watch all of the video on him.

I think he would steal Skinners job, but they would almost equally split the games

Gibson level goaltending this season, and the Oilers are 6 wins up on 2nd place for the Presidents trophy.

BTW -- Skinner is down in the 60's on this list.

The reasons he would re-sign are the same as the reason 90%+ of players in his situation re-sign. Did Letang walk because Crosby and Malkin were not in their absolute prime?

Players set down roots in the city they break in with. That creates an inertia that keeps the vast majority of top players where they are. There is also the fact that the Oilers would be in a position to pretty much match any other teams salary off and they the only team that can offer him 8 years. That said they may well go 8 years. But his somewhat off performance this year may make both sides hesitate on going long term.

I think all that matters honestly is he's performing now. I'd love a Gibson/Skinner tandem going into the playoffs. If he's performing this well on the ducks, why wouldn't he on the Oilers too?
Ask Jack Campbell. Goaltending isn't as simple as "Well he's playing well on a completely different team so he'll play well for us too." While it did eventually come to fruition, Bobrovsky was bloody terrible on the Panthers until the 2023 playoffs.

And this tracks with some commentators earlier this year predicting that the cap could be around $98M. (98 was the number I've heard, anyways. Maybe it was John Shannon who was saying that--can't remember who exactly.)

Edit to add: this could also indicate that the Oilers really are looking for an Ekholm-level acquisition on D. I've been saying for a while that Pulock is their guy, and his cap hit no longer is an issue if the cap goes up that much. They could fit him in like a breeze.

Who do you think is the better goalie? Stuart or Gibson?

If we're talking Gibson from 7 or 8 years ago, then him. Gibson's last five years though are alarmingly bad. A small sample size this year doesn't erase what he's been the previous five.

The solution is extremely simple and doesn't cost the Oilers any assets: Can Schwartz, bring in a real goalie coach.
