This is a good point. Bouchard getting hurt might have a worst outcome than one of McDrai getting hurt, as we have no fallback position with Bouch.

Points to a hockey ops department that has been incompetently run for over a decade, but assuming it's because there isn't budget for it is asinine. Scouts don't make a lot of money.

Katz can be accused of a lot of things, but "cheap" as it relates to the hockey team is not one of them.

It is unacceptable for certain, but does not point to a tight budget. There are probably hundreds of examples of Katz not being cheap. It's laughable that this even needs to be discussed.

Yeah, I agree completely. And its frustrating to see this, even if it does explain a lot. One of the benefits of having Mr Moneybags the eccentric tycoon fan as our owner should be that we have enough money to outspend everyone else on things like scouting, so we have more opportunities to hit on trades, draft picks, and in free agency. It seems like a mistake.

As long as Kling (or any other player we bring in) is better than Brown and Stecher, then the team has improved. The other caveat is that said player needs to be at a cap hit where you bury the full amount of course. Bringing in Kling, just means that Brown isn't your 7th guy anymore. Is it an answer for the top4, lol, no, not even close. But it makes the team better and costs you nothing. Again, this assumes Kling > Brown, which I guess we'd find out pretty quickly.

Personally, I’d do that easily. I’m not sure he’d cost quite that much though. I’d look at what we paid for Ekholm who at the time of acquisition was in a very similar situation as Parayko is now in terms of age, ability and contract.

So next years 1st and Sam O’Reilly as a start. But if it took more I’d still do it.

so would I. only difference I see is the retention portion of the deal. Nashville retained 250K per year on Ek. I see Edmonton needing the Blues to retain more, something closer to 1.5 million per. So that drives the acquisition price up more. The other difference I see, supply and demand, I don't see a lot of top 4 D available, that is, IF Parayko even is, which I'm not sure. Also, at least for now, seems to be a lot of buyers out there.

I would empty the cupbaords for Parayko at 1.5 retained (min).

He's our Corey Perry/Evander Kane player we get every year for free. And if it doesn't work out? We still got our assets to improve the roster still. I don't see how this is a loss in any way.

I agree its totally fine to test it out - I was just taken aback by the fact that they may see him slotting in next Nurse? Thats worrisome to me if that's the role they are identifying him for.

Just the last 2 games you had Josh Brown sift into the high slot, with perfect shooting opportunities only to hit crest and pad. Give Klingberg that same shot, maybe get an extra goal.

Sorry my mistake.

They've been perfect for the past 10-15 years, especially in the scouting and drafting departments in particular. Nothing to improve there at all. Definitely had one of the premier, most advanced, organized, and forward looking hockey ops departments in the league. Nothing to criticize at all.

He got an extension from Dallas too. Poor guy sh** the bed and didn't take it.

They key is:

- did injuries derail him? The risk is that they weren't and he did just tail off. Seems like it was lingering.

I don't mind it if it's very cheap and they are being pro active to see what he can do.

Hope we trade Jeff Skinner. That is a lot of cap to spend at the deadline for a guy being press boxed.

I know the Mutts guys called the Bowman hire and that the Oilers weren't matching the offer sheets so maybe there's something to this. I don't mind the addition as a #6/7 but playing him in the top 4 even as an experiment is no bueno.

Anyway, it's a free asset in terms of compensation given up so why not but this can't be considered a solution going into the playoffs.

As it should be. That was my one concern with Klingberg, the timing of it. Someone said he would sign in two weeks, and that doesn't give a lot of time to integrate and evaluate him before TDL. If he is their guy for now, they need to get him signed ASAP and figure out if he is the solution or not.

I'm liking what I'm hearing though.
