.. worked the first time Barrie lol.

On the PP thing. The Leafs run a 5 man forward unit for PP1 but it's been struggling, still I don't think he'd want to rehash his failure in Toronto. 3rd runner up Ottawa, an Ottawa fan told me PPQB spot is for Sanderson and Chabot, so not much option for him there either. PP oppurtunities being equal it does seem like the Oilers would be the logical front runner for his services.

Agreed. I dont actually see the fit with Toronto unless its a a PP specialist playing bottom pair minutes. Sure he could come in and play with their current injuries. They might move Tanev up to play with Morgan Rielly and pair Klingberg with OEL in the short term.

Long term, he could find himself quickly back on the bench. Mccabe and Hakanpaa will come back eventually and potentially push him down the depth chart. Compare this to Edmonton who is dressing Josh Brown AND Troy Stetcher without any injuries to the back end.

Ottawa already has a PPQB as you pointed out and they just spent a ton to bring in Nick Jensen. Zub is also healthy again so he would be playing on the bottom pair in Ottawa.

Vancouver might had made sense but Hronek is back now. Maybe they move out Desharnais and replace him with Klingberg but I'm not sure you want to join the Canucks with all that drama going on.

Edmonton is definitely the place opportunity for Klingberg to put up points and potentially win. Sure he would be using the Oilers to bring him a payday but we would be using him too.

Van and Ott are no locks to make the playoffs too. I'd think Klingberg would want the opportunity to show his worth on the big stage. That would be the best for his career and future in this League.

I couldn't disagree with this type of thinking more. Their is literally no downside to trying. If he doesn't work out you can just bury him or waive him. Why wouldn't you give him a chance? Like what if he does come back ala Patrick Kane and look like a top 4 guy?

Somehow we've gotten to a point where it's easy to dump on guys and call things stupid, to make ourselves look smart. Then when they do work out, everyone's calling them stupid for passing on a guy for free.

I don't know. I just dont like it.

That might not be a bad thing for the Bouchard negotiations. They want tonplay hardball, you give Klingberg some PP time and bring that number down for Bouchard.
Y’all think that Bouchard wouldn’t get an offer sheet are hilarious. Bouchard is 24 years old, already has had one of the best playoff runs in history for a Dman, has better metrics than Makar, has scored 80 points, is an ELITE puck mover, always ranks amongst the best in successful zone exits. Is excellent in zone denials and transitional defence, has 60%HDCF THIS YEAR. Y’all have selective memory too. Ekholm was trade bait for over a year. His numbers were declining and his usage against quality opponents was dropping. Most thought his career was winding down. Comes to the oilers and starts hitting career highs.

HFOil - Bouchard sucks!

HFOil in 2026 - We need a D who can move the puck!

Can already picture it, those same fans also think Barrie and Bouchard were similar players.

Or we could put the better player on the PP to give us a better chance at winning games.

Huh? When did I say anything about offer sheets or trading Bouchard?

My point was that brining in Klingberg gives you more leverage in the Bouchard negotiations.

I'm personally not a fan of Klingberg or have any interest in him as an Oiler either.
A different top four D on the market is a much better option than signing a guy who's defensive skills are pretty awful along with having to return from hip surgery. If we already have fans bitching nonstop if Nurse or Bouchard make defensive gaffes, Klingberg would make the liquor stores here wealthy with how bad he is defensively.

Stay away from Klingberg.

Give me
Ekholm Bouchard
Nurse Pettersson (or anybody else that isn't Savard-like)
Kulak Emberson
Stecher

Calm your tits. Bouchard has 0 powerplay goals this year.

Based on your logic "giving us better chance at winning games" you could absolutely argue that Klingberg could do that.

It's not the worst thing in the world to have options and therefore leverage. When the Oilers signed Nurse we didn't have a Klefbom to back him up. We didn't have any leverage. You can still sign Bouchard but you aren't as desperate to give into whatever his contract demands are.

Signing Klingberg isnt going to do anything for Bouchards contract demands, unless you think a 32-33 year old who is miles worse at even strength is going to get Bouchards agent to come down.

The only thing signing Klingberg would do, is make people realize how good Bouchard is at 5on5.

at that point, just bring back Barrie.

I mean if the Jfresh player card says so, I guess we shouldnt even try. I mean who wants a potential top 4 RHD for free? Not us apparently. We might as well admit that Klingbergs career is over because of the 14 game stint he had with the Leafs on a bad hip. Patrick Kane looked cooked before he had the surgery too.

Jesus I just need to step away from HF where fans expect to get a right shot ekholm for peanuts. The Oilers don't have a ton of assets and will lose the bidding war on the proven guys.

Just dont complain about management sitting on their hands and not being creative when you poo-poo options that have little to no risk.

Valid concerns about Klingberg, but you have to realize that we are talking about the cost of FREE. If he doesn't work out, he becomes D-man #7, and we've lost nothing.

Also, if that 0% EV Defence concerns you about Klingberg (it should, point taken). This -5.1 Defense Rating, lower than anyone we have on our roster right now, should also be of concern:

Klingberg was very, very bad in Toronto. Now he hasn't played in, what, a year? This one is a total head-scratcher to me.

Is he really still a top 4 RHD though at this point? I can't even express how much I would hate watching a pairing of Nurse + Klingberg attempting to play defense when I hated the Nurse + Ceci pairing for years. Outside of moving the puck, I just don't see the positive out scaling the negatives to him as an Oiler.
I will definitely complain about management not being creative if they fail to land good targets especially with having the extra money to spend from Kane being on the shelf which would be quite justified, wouldn't you agree?

Using their money for Klingberg is just a lateral move at best. Look elsewhere, and look higher.

How do you figure? It's worth it even if it gives Bouchard a kick in the ass.

When players look at negotiations its pretty straight forward. You look around the league at comparables and production. If Klingberg does better than Bouchard on the powerpay, that's not only good for the team but it's good for negotiations. Bouchard won't have the powerplay production and bring down his overall numbers. Bringing down his overall numbers would likely bring down his comparables and his contract demands.

Oilers have enough assets to win any bid they want if they go for it.

I guess just stepaway when no one buys into your thought process that bringing in Klingberg will help for leverage against Bouchards contract.

Klingberg was also pretty bad the year before he joined the Leafs, theres a reason he didnt get a long term deal again.

I'm not against bringing him in a league minimum, but theres going to be teams willing to give him more that might promise things like powerplay time that will be more appealing to him.

Yes he was. He also had hip issues and now he's had surgery to fix that. They grind down his hips and should be better than ever.

We want a top 4 RHD and if healthy, Klingberg could be that for near league minimum.

Is it likely that he succeeds here? No. If it doesn't work, are you any worse than before? No. It's a no/low risk move that could be a massive win for no assets.

Ahem... while were on the subject of poor defensive analytics defenceman. Can I just say that two Pens fans have accepted my offer for EK65 @ 50% ($5M). And have even said that my offer (doable with our assets) was TOO much to offer for Karlsson and Dubas would probably take less. I often over-offer on the mains just to see where a fanbase sits on a player instead of trying to fleece them and get instant nos. I think there's a path to EK65 if the Oilers decide to explore it. By the time we add EK65 we wont even NEED to defend ;)

Meh, I wonder if his net rating has to do more on the pens being a shit team along with having a sieve in Jarry. He played pretty good against us few days ago. Not saying he's the answer to the top four spot, but I'd personally prefer him over Klingberg.

Hes been outplaying Karlsson at 5on5 this year, yet you keep pushing for EK65 everytime you can.

At the same cost of course. But taking a flyer on Klingberg for free, doesn't close the door on an additional upgrade if he doesn't work out...

The same argument to excuse Pettersson's metrics could be used on Karlsson too could it not?

The only question is if Klingberg comes in a league minimum.

If he comes in at close to it, I have no problem giving him a chance when you can just waive him if it doesnt work out.

If he doesnt, look elsewhere.

Cause Karlsson has generational skill and skating. And we are a team built on skill and speed when we play at our best. I see the potential of Karlsson being much higher than a Pettersson. Pettersson is the safer bet, no doubt, he's not a guy that could potentially put us way over the top.

Not to mention Karlsson is actually Right Handed. And not asked to play his off-side. We really don't know how Pettersson would even perform in that role, some defenceman just can't/won't do it.

I still would rather look elsewhere than sign Klingberg. If they sign him, I'll root for him. Just gonna keep my eyes closed watching him play defense however. Bolded = yes, but I don't see any realistic way of Karlsson being an Oiler.

No he's not. I'm not saying he is. However, I am saying that he has been in the past and if healthy, he could be.

You aren't using any money for Klingberg. We have freaking Josh Brown playing for us and probably making more than Klingberg does. If he doesn't work out, you bury him.

Pens fans have accepted my offer for EK65@50%. And said that Dubas would consider. And that my offer was even an overpay (even though we have the assets to pull it off). I think if Dubas is really about retooling, flipping EK65 for a massive net gain versus what he acquired him for, could be realistic.

What were you offers for Karlsson retained down to 5m?
