Blackwood, a guy a lot of people sh** on here, moves into the top 5 in most metrics (Min 20 GP).

He was about 15th on SJ. Middle of the pack on a terrible team, but had good stats.

Now moves up to about #5 in a lot of those same stats on a much better team.

Who wuda thunk huh?

Stu has been better the last 1-2 months. He has moved up from 29/30 (30 being last) up to 24th in most
Still wouldn’t have tried to outbid Colorado.

Blackwood‘s having a good season but he had quite a run of terrible and also has been injury prone.

It's pretty simple. If a goalie has decent metrics and stats on a bad team, that's a smart bet to take. Didn't Lowe say that he traded for Roloson purely on save percentage?

I don't see why we wouldn't take some fun gambles like Colorado has been doing this season. They've had 6 goalies.

Well good thing we are still inquiring and not standing pat Tambo style
I don't mind waiting while we are winning, as long as we don't end up missing out completely and go into the playoffs with Stecher on our 2nd pair. If we have to wait a bit to get a better price on a guy like Petersson, then that's fine. I don't want to be strong armed into getting rid of our best assets unless they are sure-fire win trades.

Simply put, the Avs were more desperate than us. Georgiev was done done there, whereas Skinner wasn’t here.

Essentially the Avs paid up to get this Blackwood like performance. Whereas the Oilers stood Pat…. And for the most part we are also getting Blackwood like performance by doing nothing at all but waiting for Skinner to recover.

Avs also had the added motivation to get rid of a Seive Goalie high Cap Hit in Georgiev. Something we were dealing with last year in Campbell, but are no longer dealing with now. The most optimal move for Blackwood would have been to dump Campbells ass along with it last year. But alas, Holland either didn’t look into it, or the deal just wasn’t there.

Let’s come back to this in the playoffs.
I wonder what any goalie trade really looks like for us. I don't know if our current management is as high on Stu as Holland was (I'm sure they aren't actually), so if we are looking for a goalie, it might be logical to assume that we are looking for a legitimate #1. Blackwood was a gamble for Colorado that looks to be paying off, but if we're looking for a goalie, it might be for someone more proven.

No, I don't know who that would be at the moment.

The missing piece to lamenting Blackwood playing so well is that Skinner is playing at least equally as well over the same stretch.

Because "we" are too smart for that. Our GMs in the McDrai era always have terrible cases of Smartest Guy In the Room-itis where their decisions are the best thing ever until it's way too late to fix things. This is likely because we hire has-been managers who have had success elsewhere many years ago but attribute it all to their own massive IQs rather than the people or players who came before them.

Chiarelli was like this, Holland was like this, now Bowman seems to have the same disease. I had hoped Jackson would shake things up enough to at least inject analytics and data into our decision making in a meaningful way, but signing dreck like Brown and Dermott immediately disabused me of that notion. All we need now is for Stan to hire a son or nephew and the circle will be complete.

The thing with the Avs “gamble” is that it wasn’t that big of a risk at all. Cause literally anything would have been better than what Georgiev was providing for them this year. And since the Avs felt there was no possibility of Georgiev recovering, they made a pretty logical move there on a goalie who’s been talked about for years as having break out potential. If I remember correctly, Woodley had Blackwood and Ingram as his break through candidates. Ingram hit and Woodley looked like a genius, but now…. Not so much. Now Blackwood has hit, and I guess we shall see if this bet continues to pay off.

Yeh the stats bore this out for this recent stretch. Who knows what the future will hold though. But we do know Blackwood is now valued as a 5.25M goalie. So if they continue to perform similarly, I’d much rather have the similar performance for 2.6M.

Yep, as much as his defence leaves a lot to be desired some nights you would instantly regret getting rid of him. Elite point producing young Dmen don’t grow on trees.
His defence is grossly underrated here. He is excellent defensively- especially zone denials and neutral zone play

The Oilers aren’t getting Blackwood like performance. I think you have been proven wrong by many posters here on Skinner with statical evidence.

I think it's time to waive Pickard and bring up Rodrigue to see what we have. He's put up three straight years of strong AHL numbers and he's going to be 25 by the start of the next season. He needs to get some NHL games so we can see if he can at least handle a backup role.

I always find it interesting to compare goaltending numbers of goalies on the same team and Rodrigue has a full 0.23 higher save percentage than the backup Delia who has gotten into 11 games (and who has played 50+ games in the NHL as well). The reality is that if we don't give him a chance, we'll either have to gamble on him with no evidence next year or risk losing him to waivers to a bottom feeder who has nothing to lose in gambling on a young goaltender with good AHL numbers.

I would feel a lot better about giving Rodrigue a few games over spending our very limited cap space and trade assets on another goaltender.

He's a frustrating player at times, but you lose him and you are looking for another Bouchard for 15 years
He is what he is. Tyson Barrie on steroids and that's not a bad thing. Would be foolishly not to keep him and he'll only get better.

That being said, I really hope when Bouchard's agent comes into Bowman's office and asks for 1 trillion dollars for 8 years, Bowman whips out an iPad and shows him proof of why he should take less money.

I loathe to say this because it's a bad thing to wish for especially with Pickard getting wins (in spite of himself lately), but its at the point where in the big picture it would be best if his game just cratered.

Leads to call ups, forces management to upgrade the position, etc. It shouldn't be, but his play so far is juuuuust good enough that some people might lean towards saying "whatever he's good enough, not hurting us" and washing their hands of it. If he actually hit the skids all the things that we know should happen, but might not, will happen.

It's clear to me and I think to almost everyone here he needs to be upgraded, but you still have people like Strudwick and Brown acting like he's a god in there. It's dumfounding, but for whatever reason people have a blind spot here.

They don't even need to waive Pickard, At the moment with Brown up for the road trip and a 22 man roster, they're barely accruing cap space; so they can just dip into their LTIR space.

Not bringing Olivier up before the deadline to see what the kid can do would be straight malpractice IMO, especially with how Dobes is doing on his call-up. We have a nice stretch of games against basement teams between now and the start of the 4 Nations Cup, so let's take advantage of them and see what we have here. Skinner had 47 total AHL games under his belt before "earning" his first NHL start and was taken a year before Rodrigue, so it's already been awhile even by our standards.

I get a feeling the org just doesn't like him for some reason- they let his dad go to Florida in the off-season without much fanfare- and we're on Year 4 of improving stats with top ten AHL goalie numbers before his only really bad game the other day. Pickard isn't the long-term answer and I'd be stunned if anyone claimed him given the extra year on his contract, so this is a no-brainer to me even if we didn't want to carry three goalies temporarily.

I wonder how much that horrendous pre-season performance in Seattle hurt him.

I got the sense that he was given an opportunity to show something in camp, then in his big game later in the pre-season starting he put up about as bad a performance as you possibly can. Doesn't mean he's a lost cause, but I don't think there's any way that isn't playing a role.

Blackwood has been hotter. But both have been well above League average in the last 9 games (since Blackwood joined the Avs). I guess saying it’s “similar” (not the same) might be viewed differently by people though.
