Not only is the majority of Connor Brown’s cap hit for this year not buriable, it’s not tradeable or fungible in any way. The league min contract he has is largely irrelevant, but his combined total is roughly equivalent to 1 STL Blues #1 Defenceman.

We have spent cap on all of these players this year, including Josh Brown. If he was Phil Kemp, we would have saved money that could have been allocated elsewhere. He’s useless, it’s wasted money, and it all adds up.

We have a f*** load of wasted money, even if you don’t count any of the above listed players. We’re a substantial disgrace of cumulative mismanagement of funds.

Its a credit to our top players that we remain competitive.
Would you rather have not had Connor brown in last years playoffs? Connor brown was a huge reason we nearly won the cup.

Two things can be true at once, it’s possible to respect someone and dislike them as well. I’ll always respect someone for getting the most money they can, but I can also dislike them for putting a dent in my chances at a championship and that would make most not want to have them around.

The Oilers weren’t drastically low balling Holloway, their reported offer of 1.1M is right in line with what similar rfa’s with similar production were getting. This is a case of a non competitive team, with weak depth willing to over pay a player by roughly 100% because A) they were using him to amp up pressure on the Oilers to let go of the real prize in Broberg, and B) they were in a position to mitigate that overpay risk because of their weak depth which would mean opportunities up roster for Holloway and on the PP.

Either way the Oilers did a good job of mitigating the situation, coming out with some suitable fillers in Pod and Emberson, creating valuable cap space and getting asset currency for upgrading in season. Team is humming along, they’re deep, they’ve got the ability to upgrade and they’ve got another young prospect in Savoie who’s playing well and they could inject if desired.
I think final judgement on offer-sheet gate should be made when we see what we do with all the Cap accrual too. At the TDL if we are able to turn that cap savings into an impact defenceman that is here for a couple years, that’ll go along way in mitigating the loss. Imagine if we get another Ekholm-like addition, that should heal some wounds from these losses.

Agreed. I don't see the harm in it at all. The one problem would be that he is waivers eligible.
It’s definitely a bit of a tricky situation. Likely they would just run with one extra F and D while carrying 3 goalies for a brief period. It would allow them to get Rodrigue into 2-3 games before returning him to Bako without exposing him to waivers. The downside is that if it’s happening late season it means your playoff backup is going to go a couple weeks at least without seeing game action which probably isn’t ideal. Now if they are planning on trading for a 1B at the deadline then you could bring Rodrigue up to have a look, trade for the new goalie then return both him and Pickard at the deadline, if Pickard isn’t going the other way in the trade, but it’s probably smart just to keep him and try and sneak him through waivers so you have a third goalie with experience in case of injury.

Signing Jeff Skinner was the move that made it difficult to match Holloway. The Ceci trade made it possible to do so, but the Oilers opted to accrue cap space.

If people want to continue complaining about Holloway and Broberg, they need to look back to a year ago where people were suggesting they move veteran players to integrate the young players on to the roster.

They signed the offersheets because the organization didn't have a path for either of them. St Louis offered that to them and it paid them significantly based of the sudden production we got from them.
Yes they needed an easier path on a non-contender. And of course big bucks.

Good riddance.

Well, he did have 2 goals in the playoffs, so he did bring DOUBLE what Corey Perry did - but was he worth 4 times as much against this years cap? We could have signed someone to less than either of them who probably would have scored more than both of them.

Brown has been good this year and yet he still isn’t worth 4 million dollars.

Our deadline space now is like 1,000,000 based on today’s roster. Because we have guys like Josh Brown hanging around sucking up cap. We can maybe afford to add some depth scrubs at this rate.

How many players can you afford to carry who don’t score a goal for like 600 days? A lot of brilliant defensive specialists have ultimately had their NHL careers cut short for lack of scoring. If Brown didn’t have a minor resurgence in the playoffs his NHL days may have been numbered. Ultimately, for the price, you can get good players on both sides of the puck.

And what is it when Josh Brown inevitably goes back down?

What it actually winds up being at the TDL? Your guess is as good as mine. With the limited information and rumours around Kane,…. Well, Kane is going to have a big impact on this roster one way or the other.

I was under the impression we get about $4M in accrued cap space. That we can spend.

Then get an additional $5M by putting Kane to LTIR.

This Article and the puckpedia post within in seems to indicate that:

So the accrual and Kane to LtIr are different. And all indications are Kane won’t be ready for the regular season. So I think on the accrual front we should have $4M alone. The calculation on puckpedia is probably showing less cause of this temporary Josh brown call up. Maybe on the puckpedia website it assumes that Josh Brown stays up the entire time between now and TDL. So when they put Josh brown back down that should create the proper calculation as to what we will have at the TDL.

I'm pretty interested to see what the deadline looks like. There's not actually many, if any, big salary pending-UFAs on bad teams that would be attractive to contenders. It's pretty much Brock Nelson @$6m. All the others are already on playoff teams or teams trying to make the playoffs.

Exactly. If Kane doesn’t come back (which is still pretty unclear, I think), and we seek to replace some of what he brings, then I guess Brock Nelson might be a legitimate possibility. We are pretty limited in terms of assets to make trades with, either way.

Nelson is going to being back an absolute haul for the Islanders as the far and away best center on the market. If you think we need him, imagine what a team without 2 of the top-5 centers in the league would pay for him to be their 2C. Think about teams like Winnipeg or Minnesota.

I agree, but it’s hard to see what is out there for us to target. You’d like to get that 2RD, but he doesn’t seem to exist. It would be thoroughly unsurprising to see Stan Bowman shell out a ransom for Brandon Saad.

Vancouver bloggers and fans are the best. No wonder they are the most disliked fan base.

There are a lot of things to like about the Nucks current situation, but my favorite of all of them might be the insanely delusional trade proposals like this that I see Nuck fans fart out.

Tough to have a read on the market and players around the league when you just started watching again on about October 20, 2023.

It’s not just about goals. Brown was arguably the best PKer on arguably the best PK ever in Stanley cup playoff history.

I don't really understand the need for a defenseman. Are they supposed to go up from being one of the top defensive teams in the league?
Regular season doesn’t mean much. When you’re in game 5 vs Dallas and Bouchard is banged up who’s the next man up? If it’s Troy Stetcher we are in deep. Being good in the regular season is a start but when your trying to win a cup you need to better than the best teams every night.

Yeh the market is very thin. Like there’s almost no RHD rentals this year worth a damn. Which explains our square peg round hole, search for a LHD that can play the right side.

I’m hoping we can identify someone with some term, that’s not immediately obvious as being available. Like with the Ekholm trade.
