From the Sharks board. FYI.

He's far and away been the worst Sharks forward this season, and that's saying something.

You can literally have him back for free. He's trash.

Simply hasn't been that good. He had every opportunity to win a spot with Celebrini from the start of camp and lost it due to lazy, inconsistent play. Same old Kostin, nothing new. Guy doesn't seem to have any interest in playing when things aren't going his way to the extent that he's detrimental. Talented, but I understand why coaches hate him.
I like Kostin but not at 2 million.

If we can get him back at the deadline heavily retained I would do it but otherwise wait until the off season and see if he’d be willing to sign for a lower amount.

I'd do league minimum next off season. He's not worth much more then that and he wants to be here. We'll also have some openings at forward with potentially all of Skinner, Brown, Perry and Ryan gone.

Oilers made the right move walking away from Kostin, and I'd argue Kostin made the right move taking the money. I'd welcome him back at minimum next season, maybe in Perry's spot.

Kostin is built for the playoffs and arguably our best face puncher. I'd bring him back. Start building that Russian connections.

If you have followed my posting history, I’ve been a Kostin fanboy before he came in and still am after he is gone (i even got temporary relief when he went to DRW, my other fave team).

But SJ has no retention slots left. What little draft capital the Oilers have is better suited to be used at the TDL on critical needs.

How are would fit that full salary into this cap?

By deadline we should have 5M in accrued cap space, we can trade a low pick for Kostin and absorb the full 2M. Or get a broker to retain 50%.

You only need a Kostin for down the wire and playoff bump. He's a player that seems to elevate and at worst you know he'll hit and have jam and answer to stuff. So TDL add is fine. Doesn't seem like Sharks are really using him. Really its a near perfect team to park him for now. SJ could be our farm club. Wait, there ain't much I want from there. ;)

He should've been more reasonable with his ask. See: Desharnais, Vincent who is already a HS in Vancouver. You'd think these bottom of the roster guys would appreciate how much love they get from the fans in our city on TOP of playing for a contender but nonetheless...
Everyone in Edmonton gets their bag. I don't blame those guys for wanting to get theirs too.

Because he’s not here to score goals, he’s the right hand face off own zone start and PK guy. I don’t get why our fans don’t see how teams have roles and it’s not line everybody up who can score the most goals.

He's been off to a subpar start, so maybe Philip can push him a bit, but I know who I want at 4C in the postseason.
We haven't seen anything from Philp yet and postseason is long ways away.
Ryan doesn't need to play C and Philp can be ahead of Henrique by February as 3C.

Podkolzin and Kostin would need to be on the same line if we get him.

That would leave 3m for Dman. We’d be bottle picking in the ditches again.
We might be adding a goalie before a Dman at deadline.

I know you know this, but I just want to make it clear to all reading, you still have to absorb the full annual salary hit on your cap even if it’s a TDL pick up.

That would chew up 2/5s of an expected 5million accrual. For it to be less you’d need a broker and that costs org talent or draft picks, both which are also in short supply.

I'd be in favour of reacquiring him but not at that cap hit and it would have to be a sweetheart arrangement for a brokered retention.

We don't know his situation. I can't get into the rest as its poli but at the time even OV was catching flak for his passport. nuff said. Kostin took money in some uncertain times and one doesn't know how that was going to go. Get it?

For Kostin it was a guaranteed 4M vs no offer extended from Oilers. So he took money. He doesn't come from money, he needs it, and took it. Who can blame him. Guy plays his whole life from nowhere for a payday. Doesn't mean he wouldn't be here again with a chance. Nobody on the team would hold it against him. As fans sometimes we inject our own stuff. (not saying you)

Kostin had already seen how quickly an NHL career can end in STL. So he got more than a glimpse of that. Agents also are telling their players all day to take the payday because they get the cut off total take. The advice is seldom in the interests of the player themselves. Agent wants to get paid.

Hard to know when we aren’t close to the TDL.
We know the pending UFAs , some might be signed by deadline. If we are looking at an top 4 RD it would be very slim pickings.
Savard might be the only one better than Ceci.

We could hope for another Ekholm type outside the box deal.

I have no doubts the Oilers will be working on getting a D with some term.

Easier said than done though.

San Jose does not have any retention slots but that should not matter. At the deadline 50% retention will be about $275K. Getting double retention on a $2.2M contract should not cost much. It would be malpractice for the Oilers to trade for a Kostin without substantial retention.

Kane and Podz sounds a lot like Kane and Holloway going into the playoffs. Not the worst, but if one/both aren't 100%, then this team is going to be lacking the ability to push back.

On that front, Kostin makes a lot of sense as a 3rd to deal with the rough stuff.

At this point it's starting to look like a team that likes fighting is an identity that we have kind of stumbled upon. I think we really need to lean into this and acquire another player that isn't afraid to fight, whether it's Kostin or someone else. We have a lot of good middle weights, add a guy like Kostin and then Kane eventually and we'll have guys on almost all lines that aren't afraid to drop the mitts.

This team has issues motivating themselves to compete, but fights are a way to buck that. I know it's now (ridiculously) frowned upon to encourage your players to fight, but encouraging guys to look for them is an identity that I think could pay dividends.

Being a skilled team with 4/5 guys that aren't afraid to beat the wheels off you is a formula for success and no longer common in the NHL. It's pretty much the Oilers 80's formula, and definitely a differentiator in today's game. Our main competition in the Conference doesn't play this way.

Getting Kostin is growing on me. Watching Podz punch that dude really unlocked the bloodlust in me.

Young boy Perry > Kane and Podz
