Based on expected goals and possession metrics.

To be fair to Skinner, the offense hasn't converted their xGF to GF well either. But I trust this forward group to start scoring more than I trust Skinner.

That's not really a knock on Skinner - more an inherent and implicit trust in McDrai and recognizing we have 3 top6 quality wings injured and Nuge playing line dog shit.

The bold has already started happening. Our GF is normalizing closer to our xGF. Unfortunately, our GA is not catching up to the xGA. Which is a knock on Skinner.

The other factor is you have to work to create xGF, if you're doing that you're putting in the work your just getting unlucky or the other teams are having great goaltending performances that are unsustainably above the mean. It's not one person it relies on, but 20 Oilers plus a rotation of potentially 62 other goaltenders.

That's not really something that lasts - if you keep getting the chances you'll start scoring eventually.

xGA vs GA relationship relies on one guy. If that's not meeting expectations - it might just last and it's that one guys fault.

I may be a lot higher on Yer a Czech, but I would give up a lot for him. He looked great in juniors and has a somewhat slow development, but his upside is huge.

We'll take K'Andre Miller or Braden Schneider THANKS

They are finally admitting that Trouba is a disaster, great hitter for the highlight reels, but that's about it.

Just catching up in this thread and some of the Skinner copium is nauseating. He'd be a mid to OK backup. That's his ceiling right now. Full stop.
I like you, we usually get along, but this is silly.
Yes the way Skinner is playing RIGHT NOW is backup level, can't argue that, but he has been a #1 goalie on an elite NHL team for two years so to say that his CEILING his mid to ok backup is beyond ridiculous but I'm also aware that Skinner is having a bad season so the hate is out in full force and has encompassed like 95% of this message board so I'll step out of this now.

Pickard has been here 40 games or so now and has better than Skinner numbers, so I guess that makes him starting quality too?

Aim higher, through a TON on the table for Shesterkin, he's an unsigned pending UFA.
He wants like 12 mil a year. Might as well just light our own assets on fire cause I don't see any possible scenario where the Oilers could afford to keep him even if they managed to somehow pick him up at the deadline.

Lol they are never trading him man
Again, he's not extending, so go after it. They're good at drafting goalies, they probably have another one in the wings.

You just do, an elite goalie makes this already great team pretty amazing.

How do you just do though? Where does that money come from? Drai kicks in next year. Bouchard new contract. McDavid new contract. How do you fit a 12 million dollar goalie?

That would be incredibly dumb. Not surprised you’d suggest it.
Get f***ed, I'm tried of watching these middle of the road goalies, you get an elite one it changes the reality of the team.

f***ing Calgary is leading the division because they have decent goaltending, it's really f***ing simple.

Yeah these things are usually figured out by the various xGF% models. I also agree that I trust the forwards to revert to their normal shooting% more than I trust our tenders to improve.

Forward name, current shooting %, career %, Shots, expected additional goals
Skinner, 6.5%, 11.1%, 61, 2.8
RNH, 4.5%, 11.9%, 44, 1.9
Hyman, 5.9%, 13.4%, 51, 2.9
Arvidsson, 5.3%, 10.9%, 38, 1.9
Henrique, 5.7%, 15.3%, 35, 1.8

I didn't do the rest of the team, but Drai is higher than normal (+4.9 goals), McDavid is bang on normal, and Bouch is slightly ahead of normal (+2 goals), and they are the 3 highest scoring players right now, so likely cover the portion of the team that is shooting better than normal at a level that is impactful.

For the secondary scoring players we are down just over 11 goals, and they are all shooting at roughly half of what they have traditionally done in their careers. I fully anticipate some positive regression to the mean for most of the above players, and some negative regression to the mean for Drai.

Stu Skinner is another bad story, where his save% is .882 now compared to a .907 career avg. This is -9.9 GA expected swing. I don't think he will improve much truthfully though, as our goalie coach has a history of torpedoing tenders the longer they are with him. I suspect nothing different with Skinner.

Yup, GA being higher than xGA, especially if there is a corresponding negative goals saved above expected (which there is in our case), can be attributed to 1 player sometimes. Almost always a goalie playing poorly. Again, these stats track with what everybody is seeing, which is Skinner struggling quite a bit.

GF can be normalized by a few of the struggling forwards starting to shoot better or get normal puck luck. GA is much more dependent on 1 player, again, almost always the tender.

We know Oilers have had interest in K'Andre Miller before and he can play the right side. He's a puck mover as well. I think that's the guy we should be targeting. He will be an RFA at the end of the year so his value may be low as well

Not that I think you could actually get Shestyerkin, but you can get better than Skinner. I agree with the sentiment though.

They've been trying to trade him for a while but he wouldn't waive because his wife is doing her residency in NY.

The Rangers aren't trading a 24 year old, somewhat cost controlled D man, who leads their team in ES time on ice, and they drafted in the first round. He also happens to be 6'5" and 210#, and has scored 30+ points twice already in his short career. Lol, like, not a chance they trade him.

Oh yeah that's true. In any case, gonna be tough for him to be moved. He's been awful.

So your plan is to trade away the few good assets this team has for upgrading, along with all your negotiating leverage to acquire a goaltender who is a pending UFA and already turned down 11m/year?

Stick to video games kid.

I’m all for it but tell me who the Rangers are taking back, it would be a huge ransom.
