Potentially being 1A or 1B on a contending team while possibly making 6M is a bad thing

Don't think this is the deal with the Askarov camp, he knows SJ is going to clear the deck for him as soon as next year to be the starter there.

Guys with his draft pedigree and hype don't sit 5-6 years in the AHL or playing backup.

This isn't like he's a rookie in the AHL, this is now his 3rd year in the AHL, can probably guess he's getting sick of being down there.

Here's a defenseman that plays the right side that no one would expect(and everyone would hate haha)...Justin Holl.

He actually has sneaky elite numbers vs. elite comp this year and the Red Wings would probably give him away at 50%(so $1.7M this year and next). And he's a former Leaf!

Venecek is likely the one getting traded. San Jose will want to slow cook Askarov. There's no need to rush Askarov as they're still tanking. Last thing you want is your Russian starting goalie asking for 10M+ on a RFA deal

Sure if the Sharks are magically a contender in the next few years, they are willing to pay a 1B 6 mill. Wonder what Askarov does in 2 years when they sign Blackwood for big money.

Just all seems unrealistic for him to stay.

If he's good enough to be asking for that amount in 2-3 years ... then he was never staying in the AHL for much longer past this season anyway.

More like Askarov is going to get his shot now, he was called up Monday.

He only started in the AHL because he was injured during training camp.

Yeah to be expected.

No AAA prospect wants to be in the AHL for 2+ years, for top end talent there's not much more to be learned after a couple of years down there.

Long AHL development periods are for players who frankly aren't as good at a young age.

I think Stauff was referring to NHL defenseman, so Holl is out. Josh Brown is already taking up the "defenseman who's not NHL quality, or even close, but is being paid in the NHL" role on the team.

He's not top 4 nor is he a puckmover. Stauffer said we are focused on a guy who is a puckmover. He also sucks.

Did I mention that he also sucks? He sucks. There we go. Sucks.

I’ve already prepared myself for Ivan Provorov.

Honestly surprised that people are surprised by this obvious take. Every insider and anyone watching this team has identified the team's defense is a clear weakness following a botched off-season which moved out 3 RD replacing with a 30 game question mark and 3 #7-8 journeymen.

Knoblauch has mitigated this issue quite well by elevating Kulak's minutes with top 4 RD situational play and trialing Nurse at RD. Quality right shot D are the league's unicorn with scarcity and cost premium (acquisition and salary). All deployment signs point to this organization trying to create flexibility within a competitive trade market and fewer assets than many teams shopping to be able to opt for a quality LD, and potentially a player with experience to move off shooting side like the obvious Provorov ... who has some nicks character wise with the pride jersey backlash and a somewhat stalled game.

As for Ekholm, he was on and off the Predators trade list for several years. Oilers met the price with an organization in transition and wanting to move money off an expensive blueline. That's why trade discussions are generally ongoing in this league not simply a random one-off phone call and done.

Oil will trade for a top 4 puck moving defenseman. Perfect world it's a natural right-shot guy which is harder on the supply side and likely more expensive. But Knoblauch's deployment with Kulak and Nurse is building up a proof case that it could be a more plentiful left-shot guy with notables like Provorov and Fowler on rebuild teams. Pretty obvious stuff.

Both Pulock and Parayko are RHD. Doesn't match the description.
Oh, didn't hear the segment. I wonder about Adam Pelech. I know he's injured, but he can play the right side, even though he usually plays on the left, and is on no one's radar right now, but I've heard rumblings that one of pulock or pelech could in play for a while now.

Sure, it's a need, but I think it's a huge overstatement to say the D has been a weakness.

It might look ugly on paper, but they've been getting well above average to borderline elite results defensively.
