How do you explain Yakupov and Puljujarvi then?

Stats are useless unless you know how they work and what context. 99.9% don't.

The eye test, or muh eye test as you put it, is better. Sorry to break it to you

Are you even using the same advanced stat metrics? For what period? Like this is dumb if you're not comparing 1:1 categories.

Here's a basic one, if the D is so terrible how is it the goals against is down dramatically from the last two years at this point?

Explain that one. Goals against is not "advanced stats!".

It isn't the f***ing goalies because they've sucked donkey balls this year, Skinner especially.

And that's WITH an awful PK (that IMO is in large part due to the goalies failing to make routine saves). If you figure that about 4/16 goals the PK has given up (a whopping 30% of our entire GA) could be erased, you have a team sitting with about 49 goals against?

Fair?

49 goals against would put them right at about 10th best (or tied) in the league for GA. How exactly does that suck? Where do you think wins are coming from? Santa Claus?

The D at 5 on 5 are doing much better than basically every other element of the team right now. It's the main reason we have an OK-ish record instead of a "holy shitballs" bad one.

Speaking of young stud dmen , David Jiriceks upside is tremendous and he looks to have had some productive seasons in the AHL in a bad organization. Getting someone like him into our system and organization would be a monster move. A guy like Ekholm and Coffey would turn a guy like that into an impact defenseman in no time. He seems to be in the doghouse in Buffalo....

I love Jiricek's potential, but I don't love spending assets for potential while we're right in the middle of our window. He's the sort of player I would have prioritised 3-5 years ago, but with the value that will be required to get him, I'd rather a player that is already what we'd hope he'll turn into.

Has Hall been that bad? I'd still do that trade just to give Hall a shot at the playoffs in Edmonton. Guy was a trooper when he was here and deserved to see some success with the team.
