Gibson has faced more shots than any goalies. Skinner has been sheltered on the Oilers and it shows. It is a gamble. High risk risk reward. Stuart Skinner on the other hand is high risk low reward
It's seriously not a gamble though. By basically every measure he was one of the worst goalies in the league last year. Yes his team was bad but he wasn't putting up good numbers either. Just looking at his pure stats... In 2022-23 he faced about 37 shots a game (just by pure math) and wasn't very good. The following year in 2023-24 he faced about 29 shots per game. His sv% dipped and his GAA, while better than the previous year at an eye-popping 3.99, was still 3.54. The Ducks actually cut down the number of shots allowed and he still sucked.

Once again, 5 games does not somehow override 5 years of absolute suck.

Henrique has been good lately. 4 points in his last 8 games. Outscoring opposition 5-1. #2 guy on the PK.

Henrique is underrated AF.

He doesn't do a lot that's flashy, but he's just solid. Gives up nothing, always outscores always out chances.

I think a coaches perfect team is 12 Henrique's and 6 Ekholms... But particularly on a squad with McDavid and Draisaitl... Man you love to have a guy like Rico.

I remember in the past, wondering if the team did nothing different would it be better than all the changes.

I just whipped this up. So, we couldn't have fit the cap and stand pat, but if the only deals we did were Podkolzin, Ceci/Emberson, and added a guy like Kapanen, this is what we could have had within cap. You don't sign Arvidsson, Skinner or Henrique. Is it better than what we have? It also gives us $1.2M in space to add at the deadline. I don't know the accrue calculation, but under the cap helps.

The problem with this is you're not accounting for Evander Kane, you'd have to likely pay to get someone to take his contract and have it work within his NTC. Otherwise you are way over the cap when he comes off LTIR.

37 shots and 29 shots a game is a lot on average. Skinner on his usual day lets in 5 on 16 shot before the 3rd

I always laugh when people pretty much say "Do you REALLY think Edmonton can find a goalie that is better than pretty much a last place goalie!!??"
It's always like: "We need to upgrade in net"..."How? We can't afford a Shesterkin or Hellebuyck" like Skinner is just outside the top5 goalies in the league or something haha.

Dude is literally being outplayed significantly by an AHL goalie, lol.

Giving them both a pass for their 1st games this year, Pickard has a .915 save percentage, Skinner is .890, that's a massive difference.

I mean Gibson was basically that last year.
Anything is better than pretty much having the current worst goalie in the NHL when your team is still sheltering him at best they can. That heat map though. Skinner is letting goals in from EVERYWHERE lol

These guys have some sort of hard on for Skinner. Can't even play the goalie that has performed better. Mindboggling really.

They are just operating on "HOPE"

In Feb 2023 I believe he faced 50+ shots *three times* in that month alone, which I believe is an NHL record.

Dallas Eakins was running a total shit system, lol, Gibson should've slapped that idiot in the face for that.

Well we're at year 10 now and I don't think this team is good enough to win the Cup... again.
based on what? they almost won it last year despite a 5-12-1 start

and Podz are okay, but they're not as good as the guys they replaced who the Oilers basically lost for nothing. In fact most of the Jackson/Bowman acquisitions in the offseason have been middling at best. Even the much vaunted Savoie as pointed out earlier has not had the greatest returns so far.

As for Ken Holland, I rag on him for inept drafting (zero draft picks currently playing for the Oilers) and several bloated contracts/bad acquisitions (Campbell, Nurse, AA, James Neal, Zack Kassian), which outweighs the good he did (Ekholm, Hyman, Knoblauch). The team did almost win the Cup, you're right. But in the game of life, almost doesn't count for anything.
disagree...the bad outweighs the good
we were 1 period away from the Cup on a team Holland built...that is a fact

One of my biggest gripes with the Oilers over the past decade plus is that they've always had reactive management, never proactive. Waiting until the problem becomes so big it cannot be ignored is not a viable solution in sports. I could care less if Bowman's only been on the job for 4 months. Your job starts when you're hired. And through a quarter of the season the Oilers aren't even in a playoff spot staring up at the team they're likely going to have go through if they want to have any chance of winning the Cup in Vegas. If he's "not pleased" with the team so far then do something about it.
you're new to Oilers hockey? you cry every November about how bad the Oilers and GM are then go silent when they inevitably turn it on in the 2nd half

You're right, this guy is a significant upgrade:

Right, but his numbers didn't improve as the shot total went down. In the case of his sv% it actually got worse. Same with his GSAA.
Oilers are playing near perfect defense in front of Skinner for awhile now and this is his numbers. Gibson is facing loosy goosy pond hockey chances.

Based on the fact we're not even in a playoff spot currently and I don't think they're ripping off any 16 game win streaks anytime soon.

And again, almost doesn't cut it. And we've lost some pieces since the Cup run that haven't been adequately replaced.

Ideally we don't start slow every single year then have to play catchup.

Dan Vladar will get traded for like a 3rd rounder I bet

11GP 2.59 GAA 0.905%

7/11 games with a 900+

I will take that

We would be doing cartwheels if SKinner could get these numbers and this is Calgarys backup LMAOOO

They have the same point total at this time two years ago when the team finished with 109 points (better than last year's 104 points).

You guys are picking the one guy that has numbers significantly worse than Skinner's over the last two seasons. Skinner's played 138 NHL games and his sv% is .907. Just find someone better than that and you won't get any arguments from me.

Paying more for a guy whose numbers over his last 138 games are way worse, while also cutting into the team's ability to upgrade the defence, is f***ing stupid.

Teams are not equal

Skinner would have a 4GAA and 0.840 on Anaheim

So why don't Gibson's shitty stats matter for the previous years? Why is it only this year that actually matters?

It takes something special to keep defending a brutal goalie in Skinner. That's all.

Give me Dan Vladar

He would SMOKE Skinner's #'s here
If we're getting a new goalie it has to be a significant upgrade. I don't think that's too unreasonable an ask.

Rodrigue is probably already better than Skinner but the Oilers don't really give chances. They prefer to trade them first and let other teams take chances.

So again, why are Gibson's stats this year so relevant and the stats the previous 5 years so irrelevant?

We don't need a 16 game win streak.

We need to pass Vegas. They are directly in the path of a Stanley Cup.
