At the deadline last season? Maybe. At the draft? Doubtful. At last year deadline Blues wanted Holloway and Broberg for Buchnevich. I honestly think the Oilers win the cup with Buch last year.
I believe it was Buchnevich retained so it's not 5.8M. Maybe more like 2.9M. That would be a non issue to the Oilers offseason. Also we would add Buch on top of Henrique to the Oilers for the playoffs. At the deadline last season? Maybe. At the draft? Doubtful.
Odds are the ask at the deadline was both and likely our 1st. And his $5.8m changes the off-season substantially.
It's possible that he pushes us over the top, but there's the argument that Henrique at 3/4C solidified our bottom six that came up big multiple times in the WCF and the Final.
These guys are the insiders?
I think the majority of fans are just upset and don't really know where to put their anger.
Instead of going back and looking at things logically, they don't care about why we did what we did. They just want to point the finger and call people stupid to make them feel better.
When you look at the Broberg he had problems the moment they drafted him back in 2019. Despite showing an incredible toolbox, he had injury concerns and didn't get along with his coaches in Sweden over the next 2 years. In those 2 years in the SHL he played 89 with 4G 17A and -5. Still, he put up 0's in his 12 playoff games as he was pushed down the lineup. Broberg was supposed to play a more meaningful role in the men's league but was never able to earn it. Now was that the team that "didn't believe in him" or was that Broberg being impatient and showing that he just wasn't ready?
Instead of working through it, Edmonton brought him over to the AHL. He looked good enough to earn a callup to the NHL but it was obvious that he wasn't ready in his D+3 season where he was -8 in 23GP with 1G 2A.
Heading into his D+4 season with Woodcroft, Broberg was finally able to prove he was an NHL defenceman with 46GP. He had 1G 7A for 8P. He also played 9 playoff games where he didn't register any points. A big reason Broberg was able to get these games in was that Woodcroft loved his 11-7 but when the Oilers acquired Ekholm his ice time and opportunity went down. I think Ekholm/Nurse/Kulak on the left side really set the stage for Broberg and his cap to ask for a trade. He wanted the opportunity to prove more elsewhere.
Now we enter in D+5 and he's clearly too good for the AHL but not really good enough in the NHL to take someone elses job. I think people forget how terrible we started last year and Broberg was sent down. In his 12GP last year, Broberg was here in October/November for 10 games where the Oilers were 2-8. He then finished the year with 2 more games where they lost both.

Now we heard rumors that other teams were asking for Broberg in trades and that Broberg had asked for a trade. At that point you could definitely argue that Holland should have looked at trading him even though he was still an RFA. After all, he had not really found much success and at that point, no one was looking to spend big money on a player who couldn't even stay in the league. To be fair, I think trading him at the deadline would have seen a pretty low return - like a 2nd round pick. Keeping him as an asset for a playoff run was valuable depth and even if they wanted to trade Broberg down the road, they could have looked at trading him at the draft or free agency.
Obviously, Broberg comes in and looks great against Florida and starts making a name for himself. At that point you have to think it's time to pivot and maybe consider giving Broberg more than he's worth. Now the Oilers are in a difficult situation, but no one is really talking about it. Rightly or wrongly the assumption by both fans and media are that we need to get better and the RFA's will have to wait. We are all happy with signing two proven goal scorers in Arvidsson and Skinner up front. On the backend we still have the same defense (less Desharnais).
Fast forward, everyone is on vacation and the priority for Bowman was to sign Leon Draisaitl. He's on the job for less than a couple weeks and he's hit with the offer sheets. It's only after the offer sheets happen that everyone begins to panic - so I don't see how this is Bowmans fault. He was stuck with NTC's and would have had to move some serious cap out to keep Broberg. Kane, Arvidsson, Skinner and Henrique all had NTC's so I don't see who else he's moving in less than 7 days with a gun to his head.
Looking at its now though, I would rather have Walman in that spot. He comes in at a lower cap hit and is a better player even if it cost more to get him.
You're fine with losing a 23 year old 1st pairing defenseman for a second rounder we spent on a rental role player... one who hasn't even played a single game for the Oilers.Still fine with Broberg moving on, obviously we should have developed him better, but it went beyond the point of no return.
Holloway on the other hand, he was crushed when we didn't match. He's probably not crushed at all now, haha, but it was pretty obvious after we tried to lowball him all he was trying to do was force a reasonable contract to stick with us. That was all very much on us for clearly feeling he was expendable with how JJ asked July 1st.
I can't say I expected Holloway to have this season he's had in him already. But, hey, maybe if I was paid hundreds of k's a year with my only job being to understand the hockey players in my org, maybe I would have known better. Apparently we still have loads of people not earning their paycheques in this org.
The thing that hurt the absolute most is seeing the underlying youth in our organization, that showed a ton of growth in that playoff run, completely vanish in a single offseason.Still fine with Broberg moving on, obviously we should have developed him better, but it went beyond the point of no return.

Interesting, they know all the Oilers business, inside and out, when it matters the most. At the most critical time, when the poor recently devastated fan base of the Edmonton Oilers needed illumination shone upon the most recent franchise annihilating misunderstanding.
Journalists, providing the absolute unabridged truth, with no sponsorship at all. Some people get sponsored to perform a job. to be a spokesperson with an assigned message. I understand that. Nothing against the law doing that, getting the message out there and all. I mean it skirts the law but who's going to litigate?
100% complacency in not only sinking the Oilers franchise today, this season, this playoffs, but long into the future. Now the Oilers can't ever win the Cup. All's it took was a motherf***ing village. Right?
You have 6 thousand more likes than you have posts. Are you an insider?
Can you like other posters comments? I can't.
I really, really hope they don't miss out on Berezkin. He really has it all. Huge, fast, led his KHL team in playoff scoring last season as a 22 year-old, and will probably do it again this year. Sign him up and give him all the chances with Drai that were wasted on Nogoalsin.
Corroborates this report
Yeah. They got knocked out of the NCAA tourney by BU a few days ago, so I'd guess he'd be heading to Bako.Does anyone know is his NCAA season is very and if we might see him with the Condors to close out the season?
Been saying it since August. Bowmans eye for talent is as bad as I have ever seen in a GM. The guy is the anti Scotty BowmanAnother reason Bowman and Jackson should both be canned is not going after fabbro or Fowler who have both been integral in both of their teams playoff pushes. One of the reasons St Louis is doing what they are doing is cause they grabbed Fowler for less than walman cost who minimized the loss of parsyko. Guys got like 28 points in 40ish games for a 2nd rounder and a nothing prospect.

We have given young guys opportunities. Even young guys who are struggling but if guys can’t grab the job and run with it, that’s on them.
3rd rounder….but they did trade a 2nd and a 3rd to Pittsburgh to get their 2nd rounder back and they gave us an extra 3rd and Fisher for not matching. So in the end they payed 2x2nds, 3x3rds and Fisher for Broberg and Holloway. They also got Holloway for a 2nd rounder
They were given opportunities whether people want to accept that or not. They showed flashes of ability until appearing promising in the playoffs.Broberg and Holloway say hello from StL.

Sorry but that is completely incorrect.
They were jerked around mercilessly by Woodcroft and Holland. PJ and Yamo were gifted 20 minutes a night in the top 6 while Holloway barely played 5 minutes a night on the 4th line. The only time Broberg played was when that blithering idiot Woodcroft went 11-7 and Broberg was lucky to get 4 minutes a night as the 7th D yet he’d play Desharnais 15 even though he can’t skate.
Broberg asked for a trade it got so bad and he never withdrew that request. Holloway finally played because KK couldn’t ignore he was finally ready.

Nah this is rewriting history but I don’t want to discuss it anymore. There is a thread for both of them.Sorry but that is completely incorrect.
