Rumors Proposals Thread Post Deadline Apocalypse 3rd Times A Charm Stu Stu Stupider Management May the Schwartz be with You

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Fair. But that’s a huge what if though.
This is a guy who has had a bad year, is still injured and will have like 7 or less games to get back into game shape and get on the same page and learn the teams systems AND get confident enough to get back to his game. This is also a guy who has been known to be a ghost in the playoffs. It’s a ton of risks for the assets we gave up.
He could be a great fit maybe but it was a ton of risk for honestly…a little potential reward??
A ton of risk? They gave up a mid to late 2nd round pick and filler.
Even if Frederic is a rental who performed well in the playoffs, that's a decent investment.

People get too impatient and make a lot of assumptions, it seems to be an HFOil trademark with certain posters. Need to let this play out before taking the knives out to management.
Hell, I'll even extend that to the offseason signings. If they perform well in the playoffs, I couldn't care less that they underperformed in the regular season. It's all about the playoffs then we can judge.

Frederic hasn’t been a noted strong playoff performer. Lots from Boston fans and others where his physical game vanishes in the playoffs and he is much less effective.

We made 2 moves and one of them was adding a guy having a bad year and was injured enough he will have under 10 games to get back up to game speed, learn the teams systems and be ready for the playoffs. AND he is a UFA. A ton has to go right for this to not be a bad trade. We made the trade based on what he could be and not what he was. Those trades are always high risk.

Also look at who our coach is and how he handles forwards. Frederic is going to get limited ice time until he figures out our system. So Frederic needs to hit the ground sprinting or he is going to get limited 4th line minutes/healthy scratches.

As I said, a lot of assumptions here. I'm going to let it play out before pressing the panic button.
They gave up a 2nd round plus inconsequential stuff, I don't see a big risk.

Also, he had 3 goals, 5 points in 13 playoff games last year and a +5 in a 3rd line role. Seems pretty solid to me. I'm in wait and see mode.

Hyman was pretty trash in the playoffs for the leafs. He's been a beast for us.

Knob is pretty inconsistent with how he deploys new guys. Arvidsson and Podkolzin both were basically stapled to the top 6, really only J. Skinner got the 4th line/scratch treatment.

Personally, I think Frederic looks great here if we staple him on Drai's wing. Could be a Hyman for the 2nd line.

Fair. He did have a better playoff last year but that’s after he was having a great regular season on a team he had a ton of chemistry with all year. He will have near zero type to build chemistry and familiarity here due to his injury and he’s had a bad season.

Sure I am probably panicking too soon but the whole situation stinks.

He hasn't helped as much as many want to pretend. He's been an utter disaster on his 2nd start in a row which hasn't let them put as much pressure on Stu.
If your backup comes in and spells off the starter for a game here and there, that is his job, and Pickard has done it very well. When you're asking him to play 2 or multiple games in a row consistently, you're then getting into a starter ask. That means, obviously, there is a problem with starter, not the backup.

If we're looking for options going into next year, Comtois is dominating the KHL this year. Plays a style of game we desperately need here and could be a good option.

Lots of good goalie options as well if any want to come over. Worth a shot at this point.

Speaking of the KHL, I've always thought Josh Leivo would be an interesting fit. He just broke the record for most goals in a KHL season.

He kind of plays like a poor man's Hyman.

This takes the cake for oddest post if the day so far. And that’s including everything @Mr Kot has posted today.

A guy who washed out of being an NHL regular 4 seasons ago and is coming 32 would maybe be an interesting fit on a beer league team. There is zero need to sign any old players who can’t play in the NHL anymore. The quota here is full.

It's worth a shot in camp. Could end up with a Stefan Noesen. He washed out of the league and turned into a solid 40 point third liner at 30 years old.

No it isn’t.

Noesen was out of the league for a much shorter period of time and he was younger when he did and subsequently returned. Also he has never scored 40 points at anytime in his career. You can’t be solid at something you’ve never accomplished.

In terms of top 10 things this team needs to do to improve, this is about 38th.

We're talking about random camp invites from outside the league. Obviously it's not high in priority lol.

I watched Leivo as a junior when he played here in Kitchener. He was excellent in his short time with the Rangers. @McDNicks17 's description is pretty accurate. Leivo was a guy who played a gritty power forward type game but with a really good shot. I think he has more natural skill than Noesen for example. He's also a right shot but played a lot on his off wing so he is also versatile in how he can be deployed. He's got good size, is physical and decent defensively. Also a decent skater. I wouldn't be at all upset about giving him a contract at league minimum. At the very worst he'd be a terrific vet for the Condors. But he could easily be a cheap 4th liner who could chip in some offense.

But that is probably the floor. In any case, if you are dealing away your picks to compete you have to find cheap player somewhere.

Another guy who could be a late bloomer is Jackson Parsons. He was the OHL goaltender of the week at least 4 times this year. He is undrafted and has been key reason why the Rangers broke 100 points for only the fourth time in their history despite heading into the season with little expectations as a team. He's going the NCAA route but I suspect if he was offered a pro contract he'd be interested.

Austin Elliott is another interesting goalie over here. He's going the NCAA route too.

He's actually from Alberta and left the WHL to play for the Knights as an overager. They're stacked, but that 32-1-0 record is crazy.

Signing players like Josh Leivo to <1 million dollar deals or PTOs isn't a problem. The worst that can happen is that he sucks and you send him down. The only time signing these declining veterans or has beens causes issues is if they start taking up significant portions of the cap. John Klingberg would be a lot more tolerable if he had a 1.1 million cap hit instead of 1.75 million.

We didn't max out our cap space with Kane on ltir anyways. So really, Klingberg being at 1.75 is an annoyance for fans and that's about it. It didn't stop us from adding anyone, lack of assets did.

Stan Bowman on after hours when when talking about a possible McDavid contract extension in the summer.

"He's the most important player we have here. That is priority #1. We'll get to that this summer. Now's probably not the right time to talk about that but we all know that Connor's gonna be here and we're gonna make it happen"

You guys are talking about getting players from the KHL? Well how about one we already drafted and own the rights for...

23 years old. 6'4" 210. Can clearly generate offense...
I suspect everyone would like to see him signed. But I am less confident that this will happen given that we hear almost nothing about him in the Oiler's plans.
